Tom Dooley & the 1866 Murder of Laura Foster w/ Charlotte Corbin Barnes - A True Crime History Podca

Музыка

Most of us are probably familiar with the Kingston Trio song, "Tom Dooley", but fewer may realize that it was based on the true life murder of Laura Foster in 1866 North Carolina.
Charlotte Corbin Barnes is an unapologetic supporter of Tom Dooley's innocence, and explains the crime, the complications of the trial due to the intense political climate in North Carolina in the era of Reconstruction, and her suspicions on what might have really happened. Her book is called "The Tom Dooley Files: My Search for the Truth Behind the Legend".

I still don't see why she is so sure he is innocent. She states early in the interview that she started her research for the book to "prove" that Dooley was innocent. Never a good position to start your research from.

In the late 60s, when my brother began to play the guitar, my dad didn't care for the music he played. He'd always say, "Why don't you play Tom Dooley?". It's a family byword.

Charlotte was good friends with my Great Uncle Zelotese Walsh. I am a direct descendant of Lottie Foster, through Pinkney Foster, brother to Ann Foster Melton who is my great aunt. Laura Foster is a cousin, and Tom Dula is also my cousin.

It’s not often that we get to hear a woman who sounds like an elderly grammar school teacher talk about somewhat sordid sexual encounters that took place a long time ago up in coal mining hill country. To her credit she did a very good job describing all the other aspects of her book. My favorite rendition of the Tom Dooley song is by the late Doc Watson. I’ve got the album stashed away somewhere.

The Kingston Trio's singing style wasn't my cup of tea but I always wondered if Tom was a real person. Now I know. He was so young.

Thank you 😊 Interesting but extremely complex. I can't help but be suspicious of the author's intent but she did clarify it from the start. Most intriguing.
