I won't lie, I was on the edge of my seat during this entire scene. When Maverick got hit I honestly believed that was the end of it. He died protecting his best friend's son. But then i realized we still had like 20 minutes left in the movie and they showed him safely on the ground. Honestly this is one of the best movies of 2022.

I agree, the ending was quite emotional. When Maverick got hit I thought that it was it... some kind of redemption for Maverick. Then again... in the last scene where Rooster could not eject I also thought that it will be the end for them. In the moment when the "bad guy" pressed the button and the missle jumped out of the plane - for a second I thought that "that's it for them". And then Hangman saved them. There aren't many movies that gave me this kind of emotional rollercoster. ; )

They pull everything else, but, if the safety pins are still in, that seat isn’t launching! In a way this entire movie is about “Goose.” His son appeals to him, “Maverick” is still trying to protect his best friend’s son, the “Iceman” tells him to let go of “Goose”, even Meg Ryan’s extracted promise from Maverick is there. It’s only when “Rooster” let’s go of his father does he begin to grow. And that is what made the mission a success. Though he is dead, “Goose” was there the entire time.

Hearing Rooster wail for Maverick, his godfather/mentor/wingman, after he got shot down, then hearing him scream for Mav when they were getting close to the carrier really fricked me up. That part at 4:22 when Mav basically begs Rooster to eject and Rooster tries and desperately yells back "It's not working," ALWAYS hits me right in the feels. You become so invested in their relationship by this point, especially now that Rooster finally forgave him and let go of his anger. And Mav (who tried to be his father figure) who finally got Rooster back, is now re-living his tragic loss of Goose and about to (in his mind) fail him by not being able to save his son. You want nothing more than for them to survive after everything they've been through.

Just poetic writing that hangman is the one that had their backs. Maverick has shown countless times that he can win when the odds are against him. He can confront the impossible 99/100 times. But this one time he needed a hand from someone else and he got it. 5:01 shows that he was ready to die and the universe had other plans for him.

A fantastic movie, probably the best movie of 2021-2022. A sequel nobody asked for, yet delivered spectacularly and honoring the first Top Gun with *flying* colors. The subtle details that connect both movies, the continuation of Maverick's story, the conflict between a son in grief over his father's death and his father's best friend gives room for great writing and storytelling From the story and main conflict, it's characters, to the fantastic action with little use of CGI, the amount of practical effects is astounding and a complete thrill from the very first second to the credits. TP:M did not go woke, did not try to appeal to the masses, did not turn itself into some garbage mediocre woke sludge. Instead, it pushed the bar for cinematography even higher and delivered the best action-packed movie it could be There is no doubt that Tom Cruise is one of, if not THE biggest, stars in cinema history. The people who watched the first movie are greeted with a phenomenal sequel that brings them amazing memories and moments back, and the people who did not are welcome aboard this fast, dangerous and exciting supersonic jet of a film

In the first, he was a hot shot, horn dog who follows Kelly McGillis into the restroom. In this movie, he is protecting Goose's son, as well as the other pilots. The commander is pushing for more of a suicide mission, whereas Maverick is devising a way to get everyone out alive. Even the beginning shows him reaching Mach 10, so he can save everyone's job at the Dark Star base. Once that was accomplished, he got selfish by hitting Mach 10.4. He's still Maverick, after all.

Coffin corner was such a gauntlet. So many sams in such a small space it's a miracle anyone made it out. That final dogfight will never NOT be emotional though. Out of ammo, out of countermeasures, damaged, alone with no chance of escape and with his best friend's son in the backseat. Maverick spent 30 years trying to prevent this EXACT scenario, even at the cost of Rooster's hate. No matter how you saw the rest of the mission, in that moment, all you could hear was a terrified boy, helpless, panicking and trapped in a flying coffin thanks to a non-functional ejection handle. If that doesn't qualify as a nightmare scenario for you, I don't want to know what does. "I'm sorry, Goose..." it's pretty tough for three words to hit that hard...

@@thegatewaytoprestige I kinda ruined the whole SAM evasion sequence for myself - I didn't _want_ to fall into the whole "that wouldn't happen in real war!" trap (honestly, I didn't), but I couldn't help wondering to myself, "All those Tomahawks zipping around the sky and they couldn't spare a few of them to smash the SAM sites?" We see the movie Tomahawks being fired off from the forward vertical launch cells of a Ticonderoga guided missile cruiser - A Ticonderoga has a whole other set of those launch cells at the back end of the boat and, The Navy had apparently tasked *_two_* of those things to the mission. That's already _four times_ as many potential cruise missiles available for blowing up any and all dangerous, bad guy stuff which might pose a threat to our plucky heroes, and that's without even including the Arleigh Burke guided missile destroyer *_OR_* the Seawolf nuclear attack submarine which were also got brought along. That's a heck of a lot of Tomahawks which might have otherwise come in handy for blowing up all those pesky SAMs ... Just saying ... We can't go pretending like there's no such thing as a jamming pod either. There's a whole other variant of the Super Hornet (the EA-18G) which is purposely *_designed_* to carry those jamming pods and screw with any hostile electronics which might threaten a mission ... I know, _I know,_ that the whole Top Gun Movie Universe exists in some weird parallel world that is constantly moving back and forth between super-hyper-mega-authentic-and-realistic and Hollywood-WTF-?! and that half the fun is in spotting all the WTFs, but I just couldn't keep up the suspension of disbelief through the 'Mission' part. Too many "Huh?" or "Whut?" or "Uh-Uh" or "Nope" moments. In my defence, I was right back in it the very _second_ I figured out they were gonna steal an F-14 - That had me bouncing up and down in my seat, clapping my hands in euphoric, juvenile joy and annoying the hell out of everyone else in the theatre that hadn't caught on yet. My boss was in the seat next to me, and by the time they got to the hanger and started the Tomcat up, I had him a headlock, hissing "ThisIsSOFCKN COOL!!!" right into his ear.

@@LucianDevine Tomahawks don't require GPS guidance. GPS tends to be the common option 'cos it's so convenient, but a Tomahawk has all kinds of ways to find its target. If however, the bad guys had managed to somehow make the canyon cruise missile proof, one wonders why they didn't bother extending that same protection to their airbase? If nothing else, a huge volley of cruise missiles could have easily been used to 'bait' the SAM batteries into trying to shoot _them_ down, leaving a clearer path for the low altitude strike planes. The "Mission" as it plays out is undeniably exciting and tense, but it's massively contrived and unrealistic. There's not a military force in the entire world that would risk four hugely expensive fighters and their even more expensive crew (let alone, the 'Best Of The Best) on a dangerous mission when they could throw a couple of hundred expendable cruise missiles at the problem first. I love how they didn't just shoot him down with the first missile and they both were dodging and there was some good dog fighting, that's cool to see and that's kinda what I expected from a movie of this caliber.

The last real movie star. Can't Believe this lunatic made me a fan. Make movies till your 90 Tom Cruise, best thing in years
