Tom Bower: 'I was disgusted' by Boris Johnson's attempt to knight his father

"I was disgusted... I couldn't understand for what he should be knighted."
Stanley Johnson should not be knighted as his achievements as a 'failed parliamentary candidate' are not substantial enough, says Boris Johnson's autobiographer Tom Bower.

Stanley Johnson makes me cringe.....most unattractive. His wife, as Tom Bower explains, was undermined, betrayed and physically abused and by the end lacked any confidence or stability because of this man. Is that not the kind of story that puts the perpetrator behind bars? A Knight of the Realm indeed! Quite stomach churning.

An opinionated twerp, thinks he's a lecturer to have affairs with the students, he is low life and prob couldn't stand it that his wife was cleverer than him these types are like that they can't keep their zippers up, if giving him an honour it will be a travesty ----- an honour for wife battering -- the broken nose was the least of his damage..... Shows you the mettle of the man or lack of it he obviously hates women it must be gnawing away at him because he is a womaniser & I suppose he doesn't want to resort to a bottle Same as Bojo what is it now eight children the ones we know of.... A first marriage with a UNI student, then a marriage to an articulate clever woman a lawyer and four children later whom he said he'd wished hednot left.... I can't see who would look twice at the dishevilled mess, although we all know he likes to look like that as he ruffles his hair to look like a haystack to suitably fool everyone but he is cut throat just as he has two faces he was pro EU then he was Brexit changes his standing to flip flop. He also had an affair with a write another child, then another affair another child, then Carrie Symonds and two more sprogs. But there is probably more on the sidelines. These are unbelievable people I don't call them human. Peace ☮️ out SW England 🇬🇧

Don't they realise that in so doing they undermine their own credibility? He's not your chum. He's not a just a cheery, bumbling lovable fool. He's a nasty piece of work and very dangerous. It was not only here that we learned this. Boris' sister warned us what sort of an Boris was. What is so depressing is that despite the white wash of the English Press the English public has so deteriorated that they not only know what sort of man Boris, but they still voted for him. Whilst I have contempt for Rees-Mogg, Farage Johnson, Cash et cetera, we must recognise the culpability and ignorance and deterioration in public standards the enabled such an appalling man to b elected.

I agree.. I lived in France, and read a broad spectrum of European Press and the British Press apart from being in the main insular, were trivial, partisan, and puerile and I chose the last word advisedly. Mostly men, mostly racists, albeit covert, mostly misogynist they were a disgrace to Journalism, to Democracy and everything that constructed western democracy. My issue with the item is that the scandal is obscuring the main problem. People will be conned into believing that Boris Johnson's father, and the other odious men in the Tory Party is the scandal are but more important, ad more worrying is that they were elected, even when people knew. We rail against unelected bodies but the issue is the public standards, and their dereliction. As a matter of fact, it is the unelected House of Lords that has resisted the most illiberal measures of the elected house, it was the lords that resisted Brexit. The issue is not merely the press, it is the decline of standards in society, The Mail has a lot of responsibility for this, as also The Sun, The Express, the Telegraph and even the Times, but I do no longer read the British Press, I read the French, German and the superior Italian Press [pretty ropey in the main] The lady who was editor of le Monde was asked why Le Monde was such a great paper. 'Our columnists are only invited to write on their expertise when the expertise is required.' Our journalists have become celebrities with their own 'shows! They are treated as pundits on everything, they write ad nauseam columns when they have nothing to say or to contribute and in that they contribute to the decay of democracy, and the dereliction of probity and standards in the public and society generally. In short we agree about the press but we may not agree on the measures to change this, or even of what maLlaise they are symptoms@@miakeogh6844

I understand, because I share some of the reservations in respect of Corbyn however the Conventions on which democracy in this country depend must be respected that a vote of 'no confidence' and which was presented to the house was explicitly related to Mr Johnson's conduct of our affairs and his 'illegal attempt to prorogue the house to flout the very principle on which the pretext of Brexit was proclaimed and defended which was 'the sovereignty of the house'. Under such conditions the vote is not matter of personalities but one of principle. I am afraid that although I generally tend to the liberal democrats the leader of that party led her party to oppose the motion because she had decided that Mr Corbyn was not 'fit'. That is not her decision nor is her judgement consistent with the motion. Had the vote been carried the proper course is for the prime minister to resign and for the Queen to commission the 'leader of the opposition' to forma government and he had pledged that he would not seek to enact his manifesto but to form a caretaker administration prior to an election' The liberal democrat were at fault in arrogating to itself the choice of a prime minister. In the circumstances of a disgraceful press, a disgraceful prime Minister and his hideous 'advisor' the country was betrayed by a faulty and arrogant judgement by the liberals and a silly country chose to vote for this buffoon, and his hideous caucus of Brexit fanatics, who proved themselves to be not only incompetent [as predicted. Had the proper conventions been observed the country might have calmed down instead of voting in the hysterical and irresponsible way for a party and a prime minister as ruinous and as morally destitute as was predicted. It was not 'Hobson's Choice ' but chicanery and dishonesty and mendacity and paranoia of a mob that culminated in a democratic farce. @@junehitchcock170

The people I worked with were without exception hard working, honest and diligent people. I think when people talk about the incompetent civil servants they should clarify it is the ones at the head of the service and political appointees. The ones at the top have no idea what life is like for the ones actually working at the coalface for barely more than minimum wage.

I have a question. If Stanley is granted a peerage, will that mean when he dies, Boris will automatically becomes a Lord? Could this be his reason for naming his father in his exit honours list. PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN! Can you imagine that. Personally, I believe there are already too many people in the house of lords, rather than adding more, it should be slimmed down.

Actually..whilst they are both narcissists...they have very little in common. Trump has the IQ of a cabbage...whilst Boris is a well educated and articulate multilingual oxford grad who held his own in a debate w Mary Beard on Rome vs Greece. Trump probably doesnt even know where Rome is.Boris is not a very ethical person...and he has some pathological character flaws...but he s not Donald Trump.

I'm a little bemused by this hoohah. I remember over thirty years ago now when Thatcher had her husband Denis made a Baronet, and he'd never done a damn thing to earn it. It was quite corrupt of course but it was shrugged off as a perk of the job. Worse, the title's hereditary, and as a result her awful son Mark is now Sir Mark Thatcher.
