I’m surprised so many didn’t recognize Tom Baker’s voice. I remember sitting bolt-upright upon hearing it. He’s my Doctor and having him in a scene with my son’s Doctor is something we cherish and watch over and over again.

I'm just guessing, but to those who were introduced to Doctor Who by the New Who, Tom Baker might not be too much of a name unless you dvelve deeper into the history of the show. Then however... :D

My only problem with it was that a week or two before the special aired, I read a quote from Tom in, I think the Huffington Post UK, saying he was in the special but he wasn't sure he was supposed to say so. I thought he was joking, we know what a kidder he is. Then his voice appeared here and I was like, "Dammit, Tom, why did you have o tell the Huffington Post about this?"

I saw this at the cinema ... the whole audience gasped. It was one of the most amazing moments ..

Same here. It was a theater packed with Who fans, and the gasp was so loud it echoed!

When I heard Tom's voice, I started crying. I never thought I would see him in Doctor Who again. I was changing channels on tv as a kid and I saw this episode called, Genesis of the Daleks. I saw this eccentric man with a floppy hat and incredibly long scarf. I was hooked. I cried when he transformed thinking I will never see him again. I was wrong and sooo happy to see him! My favorite Doctor!

You cannot, under any circumstances, mistake that Voice

My favourite story about this concerns a fellow who sat next to a mother-daughter combination in a cinema where the 50th anniversary show was being broadcast in real time. The daughter was in full Clara rig, but the mother was dressed normally, and he thought "Mummy's been dragged into the insanity to keep her little girl company. Then he noticed that she was holding a LONG scarf in her hands. His suspicions that she might be Old School were confirmed when she screamed out "Oh My God! It's THE Doctor" and burst into tears when Tom Baker appeared. And yes, whenever I visualised the Doctor, it's usually Tom Baker. Seeing him on screen again was a real nostalgia trip.

His voice is so iconic. I’m so glad he got to continue playing 4 so flawlessly through Big Finish with that immortal voice of his that is always bubbling over with joy and gravitas.

Will never forget being in the cinema and immediately marking out as I heard Tom Bakers voice It definitely helps if you are 15-20 years older than those who have starred in this video 😂

The moment I heard his voice, I knew it was Tom Baker.

All hail the great one, you could see Matt Smith realising just who it was!! You should have heard the screaming when he arrived,honouring the earliest living incarnation of the doctor, the show was worth for this alone. let alone anything else

I saw the 50th at my local cinema and what a show it was. This ending is one of the greatest moments in Doctor Who and living proof that Tom Baker is THE Doctor, "the definite article you might say!" His distinct voice and those brilliant lines gave fans everything we wanted- the greatest return in all Whovia.

With all due respect, but who are the people saying, "Who's voice is that?" Like Tom Baker doesn't have one of the most instantly-recognizable voices in all of Who-dom? That would be like Samuel L. Jackson speaking from off camera and American fans saying, "Who's that? James Earl Jones?"

Because most people that watch the show today didn’t grow up in the 70’s, and it’s not that easy finding earlier seasons of Dr Who. I agree though, he definitely has an easily-recognisable voice, mostly because I grew up while ‘Little Britain’ aired, and he was a brilliant narrator for that.

exactly, Tom has a very distinct voice and I guess you have to have watched his episodes to recognize him off camera. I got a bit of a tear in my eye when I heard him exclaim "You know I really think you might!"

In addition to a lot these folks being pretty young, there is the phenomenon of recognizing, but not believing, which I think a few in this vid go through...I think that’s fair (says someone who went through the same recognizing, but not believing, in another fandom at the end of 2020, lol...AND as someone who never much watched Dr. Who on my own, but had a father who *LOVED* the show, and imprinted the 4th Doctor’s voice and everything into my 80s child subconscious, so that I had a very visceral reaction to “I really think you might!”).

Tom baker was my first doctor. This was such an amazing moment for me.

Some of these really surprise me. How can you NOT know his voice immediately!?

his voice NEVER faltered even with age. love tom baker! edit: a shock to most, im in my early 20s. I decided to watch it all chronologically instead of starting with new who. best decision of my life. old who is always the best. My favorites in a top 4 being 1,3,11,9

Love the first one. "That's Peter Capaldi! That's Peter Capaldi!" = Mom and Dad bought me a car! Mom and Dad bought me a car! "No they didn't." "Oh no, you're right." ... [Jaws drop & hands flail] = "Mom and Dad bought me a jet! Mom and Dad bought me an f-ing jet!"

What is surprising and delightful to me is that these fans were not even alive at the time of the Fourth Doctor and they recognized him. Truly this show transcends space *and* time! 🙂

I just watched this again today. Seeing Tom Baker’s face is seeing the face of Hope. So moving.

Fun fact: When I was at the cinema over 5 years I was shocked well more like ‘OMG IT’S TOM BAKER!’ than shocked.. Seriously.

Tom Baker mentioned that Doctor can regenerate to revisit his old fav faces. Well, the man is truly the Doctor

This was such an expierence for me at the time, even though I did not know who Tom Baker was basck then. Saw this in theaters, the others reactions were on par with these but in a theater of 100 whovians. Amazing

I watched a live simulcast at a comic con. About a third of us squealed when we heard the voice. Another third gasped when they saw his face. Another third was clueless.

...is this one of those things where pointing out the scientific flaws is missing the joke?

I’m going to be honest, I was a Who fan growing up but I never really tried to get into the new stuff for some reason. I’d heard about Tom Baker doing something but I’d never looked it up until yesterday. I’d seen Tom Baker doing panel shows and narrating this and that and hadn’t thought much, but I guess it was a matter of context. In this context? That voice. Wham. Bam. Chills. And this scene…I’m going to have to give new who a good go, I think!

I’d love to see Louise Jameson make a cameo as Leela or just any cameo. She’s still got it. It’s a joy to hear her so flawlessly reprise Leela for Big Finish. Her and Tom together again through Big Finish are magic.

With that voice (NEVER to be forgotten)... They should have reacted upon hearing it... With all due respect to M. Capaldi, his and Tom Baker's voices are parsecs and eons apart... Baker stentorian voice has a richer, bass tone...

I STILL can't get over the reactions... Anyone who's ever watched pre-2005 Doctor Who and heard Tom Baker's commanding, glorious tones would never mistake them for Peter Capaldi's wonderful Scots sharp-edged speech... Wonderful chaps [and chap-esses :) ] every one...

The hints were there. Rose or the unnamed character Billie Piper was portraying, wore Tom Baker's Dr Who attire.

When I hear younger fans saying "Who is it?" I'm simply saying the words in the opposite direction. It is Who.
