Rule 1 in several gaming systems is always DM/GM Fiat. Don't matter what the book says, the person running the game can alter the deal. And you better pray they don't alter it *further*.

And Rule 0 is always "have fun", which trumps even the DM. Because, after all, what the DM says goes, but if he abuses this, the players also go.

Im surprised the "problem" was that they did skill checks when they werent supposed to. In my experience, the complaint is that the GM just gives the players what they want without rolling.

Tom should have just replied to that email with a picture of that "rip out" page in the rule book. Or better yet, rip out the page, and then just mail it to them.

Even from a basic perspective, some nerds really really need to work on their interpersonal skills. Fine, if you disagree with something, then you're free to say so, I guess. But starting off a conversation with a stranger with a straight up accusation speaks volumes. How do these people get on in their professional lives?
