Love that you are giving socks another try. And let me just say sock knitting is all about finding your sweet spot with the right needles, both type and size, the type of yarn you like, the right heel that fits, same with toes. Just remember 2 things about socks-1-no handknit sock will feel like store bought and 2-every pattern is adaptable. So if you don’t like the heel on a pattern make the one that fits your heel the best, same with the toes. Also if say the pattern is for either a 64 or 72 st count but you find 68 st cuff works best you can do that stitch count for the cuff and then increase to what you need etc. That’s the beautiful thing about hand knits, you customize for you. Also side note The Woolly Thistle is a great online store for those NSW yarns but also Fibre in Neenah and Cream City in Brookfield have great selections of NSW. And I’m pretty sure at the Sow’s Ear you may be able to “nudge nudge nudge” and if they have enough requests they may give other types a try. As well, there are a lot of vendors at WI Sheep & Wool that bring in those NSW selections and that is just around the corner.

After seeing your last podcast I decided to start the Maybury cardigan. It was confusing to begin with and I missed the second front increase so frogged back. Then ureaka I got it and understood the tick sheet. Plus I’m knitting it in black. Also I’m knitting the petite knit Maggie cardigan in guess what….yellow 4ply with mohair. Love your podcast 🎉

Hi! I’m new to socks as well, but one thing I picked up recently is regarding picking a size. If you don’t know what gauge you’re knitting, just do a quick swatch (or start knitting the toe in a toe-up sock). You want to make sure to achieve negative ease by measuring the ball of your foot, then subtract 10% to find your size. So if I measure 8” around the ball of my foot, and I’m knitting at 8sts/inch, my math would be 8”x8spi=64. Subtract 10% (64x.1=~6sts). So I would look for the size closest to 58sts (64-6). If you don’t subtract 10%, your sock will likely end up too big. Hope that helps!

It definitely takes a while to find your perfect sock recipe. After trying toe up, top down, and all sorts of heels and toes. I found I love toe-up (created my own round toe pattern) with a fish lips kiss heel that I add a mini gusset to. I love the colors of the opal sock yarn you used.

I would love to try toe up and that heel!! Do you like those best because of construction or just because it fits so well? I’m wearing the Lana vest by Irene Lin! 😊

I made that vest too! I wondered if it was the same. That green looks great with your coloring! I like the toe up because I love the Turkish cast on and I’d much rather do that than Kitchener the toe. I don’t love the look of a heel flap and gusset but it does fit better on me than any short row heel. Until I found a mini gusset in a sock pattern. I added that to the fish lips kiss heel and it fits perfectly now. I find the FLK heel super easy and it’s very memorizable. I can knit my toe up socks now without looking at any patterns. I can write up my toe up round toe method if you want it

Hi - love your podcast! I love Opal sock yarn- I get mine from wool warehouse. I always do 2 socks at a time- that way they are the same. You need to know your gauge and you need negative ease for socks. For example my foot is 8” around so I will go for 7” finished circumference. If my gauge is 8 stitches to one inch I would cast on 56 stitches. Hope that helps.

Hi Jacque! I hate to point it out, but the I'm So Basic Socks do actually include gusset decreases on both sides of the foot. I think you may have missed placing the second stitch marker, so you ended up doing all your decreases centered on the BOR marker. The second stitch marker is supposed to divide your stitches between the instep and the heel/bottom of the foot/gusset stiches. That's the standard gusset, so I hope it helps going into Hermione!

I love the Hermione sock pattern! The texture pattern really brought out the different colors and speckles when I made mine. Yours are already looking beautiful. The main concern with sock yarns without nylon is that the heels/toes will wear through much faster. The nylon adds durability. A good option is always to use a different sock yarn with nylon for the heel and toe. I think a mint or pink color would look amazing with the yarn you are using :) If you are fine with potentially repairing the socks at a faster rate, don't worry about it and just enjoy the process! I made plenty of mistakes with heels and gusset decreases when I was starting to make socks, but no one can see that when they're on your feet.

Try the silk (or whatever you have) scarf trick-put it over your head when you are pulling your shirt on. The shirt will slip over your head easily and won’t get make up on your garment since the scarf is between your face and the garment!

Re: the Malabrigo sock. Not all yarns that have sock in the name are sock yarns. Really soft, smooth yarns will wear terribly as socks. A good sock yarn will have at least 20% nylon and the wool will have some "tooth" to it.
