While Need for Speed and Midnight Club dominated the street racing game genre in the early 2000's, there was another franchise that unfortunately got got stuck in the shadow of those two giants. Today, we're going to be looking at the first game in that franchise and picking apart where it excels and where it stumbles. Believe me, it does a lot of both.

The names of the cars are their respective chassis codes.

The lore in this game is what I like Especially those special rivals such as Jintei & Gloomy Angel

For real. And you can see different drivers going to various teams, teams breaking up (Speed Box), teams being formed (Unlimited) and more. Seeing the racing scene evolve over the games is a lot of fun!

Import Tuner Challenge added some much needed dialogue to the series to expand on the story, but the game was unfortunately too easy.

@@PURENT I've not played that one, but definitely want to. Never had any XBox consoles, so never got the chance to play it.

the handling in this game is either a love it or hate it thing and i personaly love it. I spent over $500 collecting all the games and the consoles to play them on, import tuner challenge is going for 250 on amazon last i saw, bought it 5 years ago for 30

I love the handling of the latter games, but this one just misses the mark, unfortunately. It's absolutely amazing that the games have gotten so expensive. I got most of them when I was younger for around $20-30. I guess that's what becoming cult classics does to the price.

Funniest thing, this is why marketing is important, my friend had a Dreamcast that came with this game, he never played until he came to visit me one day and brought the game was still in plastic, i opened it up and ask him why you do not play this game looks interesting, he was like i do not know never heard of it, I played it got hooked and finish the game the same day couldn't put it down . If only they would had better marketing this game would had been as big as need for speed.

For real! I didn't even know this series existed until I came across a used TXR3 in 06 at a flea market. Though the cult following the game has is great, it's a bit of too little, too late. Thankfully, the spirit lives on in things like the Shutoko Revival Mod in Assetto Corsa and in indie games such as Night Runners

Fun video. Handling is great in this game, it's just not conventional. You can really swing the cars into corners when you know how and take them at great speeds. Also, the Porsche, at least when I beat the game 2 weeks ago, was not unlocked after beating all rivals. But I did play the Japanese version and can't remember if they changed it!

Thanks for the info! I might have to try to get my hands on the JP version and see if that one doesn't let me get the Porsche.

My first game in the series is still favourite TXR Zero. I bought it like a 2 years ago, thinking it's gonna be some silly crap for my ps2 collection. I fell in love with it. It's deeeply flawed but it's a case of something being much much more than the sum of it's parts. Simply magical game. It's my favourite non-realistic driving game by far, because it creates experience like non other. The only thing i would change for TXR Zero is maybe make AI crash a bit less because although the whole game is straight up power fantasy, some battles could be harder. Normaly you just need to draw your overpowered opponent to C1 loop (if i'm correct about the name - the initial part of the highway with many corners) to make him loose in the corners or hit cars chaning lanes. But other than that it's wierd mix of mediocre elements added up to something amazing. The only issue is that whenever i return to it and start over, i can't stop until i beat the whole damn thing. Damn i even prefer it to NFS Underground 2.

It's one of those series that has a lot of issues, but also has charm. It's what a lot of modern racing games lack. There were a lot of racing/driving games on the PS2 that were like that. Also, C1 loop best strategy!

@@Isaac_Umbras Oh yeah that period had some amazingly chariming games - overall first decade of 2000s was awesome. For me another hidden gem (thankfully getting some recognition nowadays) is Enthusia Professional Racing. I love Gran Turismo, the second game being my favourite, and most of the games being 10/10 for me, but when i think of the best game in that certain niche during 6th gen, it's not GT3 or GT4, and not Forza Motorsport (which was also amazing and easy 10/10 for me) but Enthusia. Man such a great game, with so much soul, and just awesome driving physics.

@@adamlach6572 Oh, Enthusia was such a great game too! Wish Konami would give something like that another go. Could have a better shot at succeeding given the modern popularity of sim racers.

@@Isaac_Umbras yeah no doubt about it. Their first try was so awesome, and the driving mechanics were already at a sweetspot (maybe bit of a touch up to handling of few specific cars would be good), so just adding some tracks, maybe more classic tuning, and refining really cool concept of enthusia points, and it would be near perfect.

Oh yes, Zero is quite good. But the first Tokyo Xtreme Racer game on the Dreamcast definitely suffers a bit due to the strange handling model and lack of overall progression. Zero (and by extension, the other games) do a good job at fixing this.
