Tokina Cinema ATX 16-28mm T3 & 50-135mm T3 Zoom Lenses - Gear Review

Фильм және анимация

Finally got some cinema lenses in my kit. Started with the Tokina Cinema ATX 16-28 and liked it so much I grabbed the 50-135 while they were on sale. These are my thoughts and test images.
Shot with Red Weapon Helium 8k with Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 Art. Test shots with the respective Tokina lenses. Camera shots with the RED Hydrogen One phone.

    Honestly, I really enjoy these 'Kit update videos'. They feel like a really calm and informed chat with a friend. It's also really great to see your needs and requirements for quality grow as (I'm assuming) your business and filmmaking skill grows. Really enjoy it.

    Great review man, really comprehensive ! I'm tired of these other "quick review" videos that only cover what I already know from reading the specs. I am seriously considering buying one of these as my first set of Cinema lenses, but I am a little unclear about one thing. How will the focal range change on a S35 1080p camera like the Sony PMW-F3 ? Will the range become something like 24 - 42mm ( rather than 16 - 28mm ) with the crop factor ?? Thanks in advance.

    Hey I was wondering what's your take on the 24-35mm f2 zoom? vs 24-70mm f2.8 art vs Sigma 24mm f1.4 art + 35mm combo?

    Quality wise they should all be close. What you're really comparing is different zoom lengths and apertures. Should just think about what you need for the type of work you do. If fast aperture is a priority go with primes. If you do a lot of run and gun filming, the 24-70 might be a better option.

    Do you have any video links on your channel that was primarily shot with these Tokina lenses? As you mentioned, I just can't find much online about them. Thanks!

    Yeah, i'll maybe do a new lens kit update. Short answer is I still love them, but I don't use them for everything. They're not the fastest lenses and they're big so not the best for run and gun and low light. But I use them in a lot of controlled situations or when I need in camera zoom. I always like the look of them.

    in term of the sigma cinema 18-35 vs the 16-28 which one is sharper?

  • @Moviesauce

    @Moviesauce

    5 жыл бұрын

    Haven't done a side by side, but I'd say they're comparable. What you should mainly be looking at between those two is the aperture difference and the focal length. Tokina is a little slower but a little wider. Sigma is faster and longer.

    I feel the same about how you are taken more seriously. Before when i asked clients for certain prices for my work and i used my basic lenses they always bartered. Now that I have a pelican case for my gear, 2 cameras, and 3 cine lenses by Rokinon, they all pay what i ask for and know i mean business.

  • @Moviesauce

    @Moviesauce

    Yeah, some clients have trouble understanding what they're paying for, or just plain undervalue "creative services." And as technology trickles down increasingly they might feel like "well I can do that." So sometimes it does help to have big flashy gear just for the appearance of being worth more. Though I find most the time I'm delivering overkill gear for the work I do mainly because I like to use good quality stuff and less because the client needs or demands it.

    You could probably get a similar 'flashy gear' effect if you rocked up to the client's location with a Sony A7something (or similar mirrorless camera) fully rigged in a cage with a monitor, V lock and matte box.

    Have I got that right, that the front of the lens is not moving while focusing and zooming, so all of that is done internally? Reason I‘m asking is because that would working with an anamorphot so much easier…

  • @Moviesauce

    @Moviesauce

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes they’re internal focusing. Most “cine” lenses are internal focusing - so no the lens doesn’t move in and out.
