Toilets in China

Toilets in China
What are they like? How do I use a Chinese toilet? Culture shock? Have you ever had to squat? Some say the direction a culture/society is heading can be directly attributed to how clean the restrooms are. Joking aside, I think toilets in China require a significant learning curve...

From what I’ve noticed there is usually a men’s and woman’s section, and sometimes a family one. Usually they are all squat toilets. There’s also usually some janitor closet type thing. You need your own toilet paper. Some of the toilets I’ve seen in Hutongs are completely open and have it so you relieve yourself together with others.

Thankfully my hotel in Beijing in 2002 had a sit down toilet. So did the train from Mongolia to Beijing. I'm guessing places that cater to western tourists will have sit down toilets and toilet paper. Egypt had sit down public toilets but either no toilet paper or you had to get it from the attendant who expects to be tipped. That was not a comfortable situation since I'm a bit of a clean freak and tend to use a lot of toilet paper.

clearasvodka I was curious about the "conveyor-belt" toilet in the video, because I never saw anything like that when I vacationed in Mainland China two years ago. I only encountered the rancid "holes in the ground" that you speak of. Let me tell you, the public toilets were absolutely horrific -- the floor was covered with piss, shit, and trash; there was no toilet paper (you had to bring your own); and there was NO SOAP (you also had to bring your own with you to the stall). Many of the Native Mainlanders just walked out without even rinsing their hands with water. And the stench, oh my god (imagine the 40 degrees Celsius heat of summer with the stench). That was the first and last time I'll ever visit Mainland China. (I also unsurprisingly picked up a parasitic infection from the vacation, likely from trekking into those horrid washrooms.) I'm so glad I live in Canada.

My parents are from Hong Kong, and after many visits I can say it's not exactly the capitalist "modern" oasis it's made out to be, with some undeveloped areas still as run-down and filthy as a small Mainland town. Especially the apartments. This is not even accounting for the agonizing summer heat, humidity, and air pollution.

The toilet that is in the floor (the white one, not the nasty metal thing) kinda looks like a shelf toilet.

Think about the history of the world. Where do you think squatting to defecate came from? Wearing skirts (kilts?) facilitated the process. On another note, on traveling to Vietnam and Cambodia a few years ago, a lot of the squat toilets have been disappearing. The reason? Many older people cannot negotiate squatting any more.
