You did awesome job at explaining the adjustment for the fill valve. My girlfriend has been going crazy because of low water pressure and everything not going down, the water level in the tank was low and I pulled up your video on how to raise the fill valve and that fixed the water pressure problem. Thanks brother!!

Great clear instructions. I forgot to adjust the stem before I installed it so there is hardly any water in the tank. The screw adjuster can only add so much and there was no room to rotate the valve. The instructions only show doing so prior to installation. Knowing that I can release the ring and pull and readjust the height without having to take the stem out is a big help and time saver. Thanks!

Nathan...thanks for this video. I ran up against a maxed out adjustment and still need to add water in the top tank. You showed me the way to adjust the height of the siphon from the stem at the locking ring and I'm set. Thanks again!

Thank you! The tip about removing the top half of the fill valve saved me a hell of a lot of time! Now I'm just off to buy a new top-half and this thing works. On a side-note I figured out that if for some reason you can't buy the top-half right away, you can manually fill the toilet by turning the shut off tap below the toilet on/off until the tank fills up.

Knew they came apart but never thought of just replacing the top part.. excellent!!

Thanks so much - your video helps us stop our dripping toilet when we realised we could just pull off the top rather than take the whole unit out. Not sure what we did but removing and replacing the top part has obviously cleared the particle that was causing the valve not to shut properly and so problem fixed Thanks!

That trick just saved me a lot of aggravation. I have to replace my fluidmaster today. When I flush, the water refuses to start refilling. The fluidmaster only lasted about 5 years. I remember when a fill valve lasted the life of the toilet.

Glad that trick helped. I know what you mean though, about those old ballcocks. Problem with them is that they were huge, but the reason they had less problems with mineral build up stopping them is because of the leverage that huge arm gave them. Thank you for watching. Thank you for this video, sir. Had a problem with an incompletely flushing toilet, and I discovered it was because the float shut off valve was too low, thus filling the tank incompletely. Thanks to your video, I found the lock ring that you pointed out, and was able to adjust the height of the shut off valve.

I pulled out the bottom tube like you said to do in the video and the outer tube cracked all to hell. I bought the 400ARHR to replace a 400 that was already in the tank and its about an inch and a half taller. It has this gap on the bottom of the shaft that the old one didn't. I was planning on re-using the old 400 but the outer shaft (grey part) is brittle. We have real hard water as well. Limestone country.

Just installed one of these. Do they tend to spurt a little water from around the base of the arm that holds the bulb that controls the water level? That would be up around that round cap on top of the unit, where the arm joins it.

Fitted my new fill valve OK but water was to low? Pulled up the locking ring it shot up to the correct height then I pushed the locking ring down again.Job done then I remembered you should really turn off the water?

What I found why mine wasn't completely flushing was because that small hole inside the toilet was blocked with hard water deposits. I had to take apart a wire hanger and literally shove it into the hole and all kinds of white stuff floated up. I flushed and it did just that. Toke me forever to find something that worked. I think the video is called How to a toilet that won't flush for free.

Nathan - thanks for the excellent tips on this. I have this exact fill valve. It is still good. I needed to replace the flapper/filler portion. My Kohler toilet (1.6 G/F) has a moderately high tank (Despite stating it is 1.6g/f). My current flapper/filler is much taller than the replacement that I ordered on Amazon. I suppose I can lower the valve (as you nicely demonstrated), but I worry about flush capacity since the new filler/flapper overflow is a good 6" BELOW the original. Finally my question: Do you think I'll still get adequate flush capacity with the much lower filler/flapper overflow (11.5")? I'd try it...but don't want to blow off the $ if I bought the wrong unit. Thanks.

+Zoe TheCat Well, I think that I understand you that you have a new flush valve unit with an overflow tube that is much lower then the original. With all of the toilets that I am familiar with, there is a fill line in the tank. That is designed to give the proper flush for that toilet. So the overflow tube should be above that, but below any point that would let water out, like the flush lever. Maybe your toilet is still flushing with what you have in there, but there is a certain amount of water needed to not only flush, but to take the waste out of the house and into the city main waste lines or your septic. Sound to me like the new flush valve unit that you have will not work properly with your toilet.

+Nathan Cox Thanks for replying. Your summary is precisely correct. I hadn't realized that the fill line for the tank NEEDS TO BE MAINTAINED for adequate syphon pressure at the base of the bowl. I plan to add a PVC extension to the overflow (and get some more chain for the flapper). I think that will resolve all issues. Thank again for your great video and support!PS: I loved your tip on leaving the stem of the fill valve and only replacing the valve portion! Hadn't thought of that.

Hey thanks for the last tip of just leaving the stem. Why doesn't that just spring to mind by itself ... makes you wonder, right? Or maybe it is just me :-)

Can you pull it up in place when it is installed in toilet. 3:46 without turning it, of course pull up on the locking ring then pull top part to desired potion then put the locking ring back.

Great tip... I saw another video where the guy removed the pressure flow valve completely and just pit it back together. Now, I'm not the sharpest tool in the kit but isn't this piece required to prevent the water from flowing through the lines too quickly and shooting out of the top? Also, is this Peirce (white spiral) needed or can you just toss it? Thanks, my toilet is filling slow and I have the same unit. BTY...U ROCK!!!

If you are talking about the white restrictor in the tube then it is not necessary. In Missouri we don't have those at all. I remember someone else asking me that and they sent me a pic of it. It is supposed to be a water saving device for areas of the country that have stricter water laws. It is there by regulation, even though it really doesn't accomplish anything since the toilet fills to the same level. But the laws in that area require restrictors on all new plumbing fixtures to slow down the gallons per minute that they use.

A little bit of wiggling and a little more oomph. Of course you have to make sure that the post isn't in-between notches. Hope that helps.

+niyra khan I searched the model that you are talking about because I am not familiar with it. It is made by the same company, but it is a very different model. At first I was going to suggest that it may be noisy because it is a heavy duty model and many of those have a very fast fill. That normally causes it to be noisy but one of the features listed is ultra quiet. I wish that I could help you more, but I have no experience with that model to give you advice.

so i installed the fluidmaster 400a and it works great. i dont get ghost flushing, but the overflow hose seems to go off quite frequently. is my water level not adjusted correctly or do i not have the unit at the correct height? gonna check the water bill since its been about a month, but i dont remember my old system constantly filling. OR do you think i should probably replace my flapper and seal? i dont think theyre leaking. like i said i dont get ghost flushing. or do i just need to turn the knob on the unit? water level upon initial install was to the line, but when it refills it could go above or below that line so i backed it off so when done filling it wouldnt pour into the overflow tube. i know this is simple and im probably making it harder than it needs to be but something isnt right

+jacob manalang okay the water level refills above the fill line then sinks below the fill line and the fill valve dumps more water to bring the water level to the correct height. is that my flapper and seal causing the water level to fall and should i replace that? it is not pouring into the overflow tube. do i just need to turn the adjustment screw on the fill valve? or do i need to ajust the height? once the fill valve replenishes the water, it should not drain if the flapper seal is nice and tight correct? i have no water leaking outside of the toilet. the seal on the fill valve stem is good and no leaks

+jacob manalang There could be a couple of things here. It could, of course be your flapper seal leaking. At first I was thinking that is was running down your overflow tube, but your second reply said that it wasn't. Generally there isn't a problem with going over the fill level line as long as it is below the overflow tube and below the flush lever. Did you install the anti-siphon clip that should sit at the end of the hose attaching it to the overflow pipe?

Ok, you don't always have to use that clip but sometimes it helps. But looks like you did find the problem so that is great.

I just bought a Fluidmaster Fill Valve like the one in your video. But I cannot get the shaft to move. It won't go up or done and it appears to be stuck. How can I unstick it so I can adjust its height?

+Nathan Cox Yes I did. I ended up putting on some work gloves and using brute strength to pull the whole thing right out. It worked. I have installed it now and it is working perfectly. brand new toilet with fluidmaster valve only lasted one year before the valve just sticks in the off position.....yeah....not good quality. 1 year is terrible for a toilet valve.

Have you looked inside that black tube, that you wiggle at 3:44 and disassemble? I have a similar fill valve and it takes forever to refill water tank. I found out, inside the tube is a screw-like rubber roll, making water flow go slower and spiral. I don't know the purpose of that rubber, other than controlling the water flow. In my case it took between 4 to 10 minutes to refill the tank. That's why I just took that rubber out and I have no problem since. +skamravec I do not have slow fill times with mine and have never seen that in them. It has been some months since the last time that I bought one, it could be a new addition or do you possibly live in CA? I could see it as a government mandated water restrictor to help conserve water.

Does anybody know how to connect a basin on top of the toilet. Can't work out how to connect the pipes to this inlet system. It is the same inlet device as this video.
