I think an astrolabe was a navigational instrument that predates the sextant.

If you don't know Roberts, he's the one (I am pretty sure) who defeated the HMS Swallow and Weymouth and captured Carpe Verde. But the second time, when the two ships readjusted he was shot in the throat by a wayward grapeshot. Before the British could capture his body (as the Brits at the time used to return you either dead or alive, but you STILL would be hung (quite macabre)) he had his wish fullfilled by his right hand man to chuck him in the sea, before he was then shot by a redcoat in the head. Pretty amazing life that welshman had!
