This along with GRAN TURISMO 1, F1 1997, and NASCAR 98 are the ones that started my love of those racing games.

Cockpit cameras were so rare in racing games back then, this was brilliant.

I still remember racing the secret Volcano track using the Tanks with my older brother. It is sad to see how much the charm has been filtered out with games nowadays.

I had toca 2. Played it for so many hours with my cousin. Definetly one of my absolut favorite racinggames of all times. Great video as always!

I remember playing this when i was a little Kid and it was so much fun. I never knew this Game has Cheats. Mind is blown.

I had this game on PS1 as a kid and it was so much fun. Admittedly I was too stupid to actually progress in the game but still it was so much fun.

lmao damn i dont remember a tank in this game ! I do remember the big pink cadillac eldorado though! . I remember racing the wrong way on the fast track thruxton and just colliding head on with as much as i could knocking them out... ohh classic times! . Such a really good racing game to if you decided to play seriously

Man, it's weird, I have memories of playing a PS1 game that was called "TOCA" but I don't remember if it is this one. I remember it being towards more like a Gran Turismo, more simulation based, not arcady at all, so it definitely wasn't Toca 1 or 2... Were there other games with TOCA in the name? Or the words "Touring Car"? This video right here is almost spot on to what I remember playing, but the car did NOT seem to turn this fast on the slightest touch of the button

Used to love Heading down the straight backwards towards the big hairpin cutting across the cones and having a huge crash

Split screen with tanks was the absolute best!

Phenomenal game. To get cockpit view and have the physics making the cars feel heavy and real, an amazing achievement. It really felt like proper car racing, when you were in the thick of it with other cars there was that feeling of "wow, simulation motorsport really is here!"

Loved this game as a Kid. Now i Play the Race07 Mod of the Super Touring cars.

I'm 27 years old and I've just had a flashback of this game...this is where my racing started

I had TOCA 2 but never really played it because I preferred GT2 and CMR. I like as well that in Germany and Austrailia they made DTM and V8 Supercars games instead of BTCC.

Good game, still play this now and then. It was overshadowed by Gran Turismo that came out shortly after. Only other downside I think is the handling of the cars is twitchy at high speeds but that's realistic I suppose. And I saw a lot of these drivers and cars in real life last summer at Knockhill's Super Touring Car 1990's reunion, it was a blast.

I remember when my friend show me this game on his PS1 (1997-1998). Damn good times. I saw only Atari games before, so it was amazing expirience.

Even looking at the car selection screen makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I absolutely loved the cockpit view and visible bonnet damage on this game as a kid. Also completely forgot about the tank!

The "you must score this many points to move on to the next round" stipulation in Championship Mode was one of the dumbest things I've ever come across in a video game. I literally swept the weekend at Donington, and I STILL need to prove myself to you? Go to hell.

I loved this game so much. Really introduced me to "real" racing games.

This was a brilliant game although I never used the buttons to accelerate and break, I used the analogue 🕹️ on the controller for acceleration, breaking and steering

My love for racing games began here on the PS1, playing this game.

Did you ever play TOCA World Touring Cars, Jimmy? Fantastic sequel with one of the best damage models I saw for years after.

I remember this game for being one of the most graphical and physics advanced in that year in PC. You needed a great PC for playing it in high settings.

Really hope you're aware of the GTR2 Supertouring mod (version 5.4 as of today) if you're such a big fan of this game.

I lost my racing virginity to this too :D Totally loved it, you NEED Analog Stick controller not the crappy D-Pad one!! My favourite was Croft where you could make chaos into turn 1, getting AI smashed into barrier and retiring :D

This was the first console game with good ai. Had front wheel drive lift off oversteer and great handling. Stuff the graphics this was a great game and still is. When you play gt2, opponents go around on the left or right like scalectrix cars where as in this there's a temper tantrum in a Vectra and a wrecking ball disguised as a Volvo. this or Colin McRae 2.0 should have been on PS1 mini

love this game...if i remember correctly there is bonus lava track rite?....and for some reason i think this is the racing game where u can be struck by lightning while racing?..i may be wrong...

Seem to recall the Platinum version was a bit more playable, the steering wasn't quite so bastard twitchy.

I know! the writing/logos on the cars and the hud is awfull. I had trouble reading it now. I thought surely my eyes haven't become that bad!?

This, along with Joint Strike Fighter, was my first PC Games ever! :)

I loved this game and put untold hours into it.

I used to like this game when I was a kid. But I sucked at video games back then and just used cheats to unlock everything so I could mess about and say bugger all to winning, much less even putting an effort into racing. I was a kid, I likrd cars, and I wanted to drive them all. Funnily enough, I think Gran Turismo's license tests actually taught me invaluable lessons about racing lines, optimal approaches to various types of corners, and the existence of braking. Anyhow, I recently had a try at TOCA again now that I've clocked in many years of racing game experience. Visually pleasing, nice audio all around, no major technical hickups. The in-car view is an absolute treat, especially on consoles. Great game! Except... the handling is... not that great. To be clear, a car with bad but predictable handling can be adapted to. It might not be instant, and the car may still perform like a brick coated in vaseline. But it's a vaseline-coated brick that you know how it behaves. In TOCA the problem is that the margin between perfect grip and a total loss of control is pretty much nil. There's no understeer, no tyre sequealing, no signs of the rear slipping. It's a sudden snap from glued-to-the-road to a near 180 spin-out. This really hurts the game's fun factor, and I found myself more anxious about the car's erratic nature than winning the races. But I'm determined like crazy, so I did actually complete a full-length season despite never getting a good grasp on the car. I used a Volvo, by the way. Were the sequels better?

This was my first proper racing game (along with Mario Andretti Racing on the Sega mega drive). I remember hating this game a lot though, because of the championship requiring you to finish in the top 2 or something to progress, which was soooo frustrating as a kid rubbish at games

It always annoyed me that the vectra in this game looked nothing like a vectra. Actually looks like a monaro which didict come for like 3/4 years later.

I found the Toca's AI were very aggressive. Toca 2 was more docile which I enjoyed a lot more :)

Can I ask are you playing this off the actual PSX console? Or is this a PC version. Had the PSX version and the graphics and fps were not as smooth and nice!!

Definitely not the PC version. The PC version has better graphics than this, especially track graphics and AI car details. The tell tale sign is that the PC version displays the surname of all the drivers on the rear window of each car. In the PS1 version, that isn't displayed. This is definitely the PS1 version. Maybe he's running it through an emulator, though?

Rakshith K.B go to the properties of the setup file and set the compatibility mode to win98/ME and that will fix it

I played this on a PC - but god have the graphics aged poorly, at least on - I assume - on PS. I think the game looked much better on PC - was playing it when it was fairly new, along with another gem from Codemasters - the mighty Colin McRae rally I. I think car liveries were also very much different in my version - the Ford was the iconic ST blue and white - and the audi was the iconic... audi.. silver and red. The audi was the only car with (at least some) rear wheel drive - and it handled kinda weirdly in the game, considering the real life one was probably an understeer mayhem. No bimmers or benzes in the game, though. Weren't there in the real life? Like some iteration of the E36 M3 or the DTM version of 190 2.3... oh, right, DTM. Anyway. Yeah I remember the graphics looking better than they actually are. I also remember being so impressed that you could damage taillights in Colin McRae rally that I had to show everyone lol

I could never get along with this game, or any of the other subsequent codies racers. I could never get the hang of the cars handling.
