Toby Young: The Free Speech Fightback To Prevent Outrage Mobs Destroying Lives & Careers

This week's guest on "So What You're Saying Is...", is journalist and education campaigner Toby Young. Toby is one of Britain's best-known journalists. Now writing for The Spectator and Quilette, he founded a magazine called The Modern Review and also wrote for Vanity Fair. His best--selling book, "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People", was later made into a film. He's also a champion for free schools and has founded 4 of them.
His latest project is the Free Speech Union, a mass membership organisation dedicated to protecting free speech, which is increasingly under threat. The F.S.U. will be a mass membership organisation that stands up for the speech rights of its members and aims to create a more tolerant atmosphere on social media and other platforms.
So if a member is targetted by a social media outrage mob for the inadvertent use of certain language, a taboo word or for dissenting from the prevailing orthodoxy, the FSU will mobilise on social media and its members will come to their defence on social media.
If they are accused of something, the member will be put through some form of due process to check the evidence so that they aren't just presumed to be guilty and cast out as Sir Roger Scruton was when George Eaton of The New Statesman passed incorrect information out via social media, which led to a campaign of hate against Scruton, ultimately resulting in Sir Roger losing his position as a Government adviser. The way in which veteran ITN journalist Alistair Stewart was treated & fired is another example -- as was Toby Young's own experience at the hands of a social media mob.

@@chriscolabella880 I can't disagree with Milton either. Accepting free speech ,of course means accepting critism for ones expressed opinions. Personally, I don't give a hoot if people call me names. If it is true, it doesn't bother me. If it is untrue, then I ignore it, unless , of course it is libelous or slanderous to an extent which would require judicial involvement. I am talking about common sense free speech which all sensible people understand and which once prevailed in our land and others in the free world.

I was speaking with my son about this last night. We defined two types - racism where hate and intent matters. Then there's the woke version which is “tripwire racism” . Where no hate or intent is required and context doesn’t matter. Tripwire racism is designed to bully you into silence. You don't commit it. For the victims of tripwire racism it's a passive experience - it's a trap you fall into and become ensnared. The Alastair Stewart episode is a good example of tripwire racism. No intent, no malice and no hate was required to 'get' him. 👍

Commenting as a father who was twice falsely accused in order to deflect the authorities attention to my wife who was harming our daughters while I was at work - I say that the anti male injustice goes a lot further than Free-speech. Free- speech is certainly a very important facet of this - I recall the moment I became a totally dismissed non-entity - talked about - not reasoned with - treated without respect or dignity - as if already convicted - no trial necessary. I recall how everything I worked for and earned - and everything I believed in and stood for was stripped away from me. But luckily the last judge regarded the accusations as most serious and so he DEMANDED my accusers supply their evidence. Child protection first said they "lost the file"; then they "asked to withdraw" and finally they confessed to never having any evidence against me. Sadly my accusers never were tried for the many times they perjured in sworn court submissions. So I cannot regard any of them as being my equal in terms of BEING HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT I THINK DO AND SAY. Further that equality is in their control. They can make themselves my equal any time they choose to - there is no patriarchy to blame in this. But you know so few are loud about climbing to the top in commerce, but I see so few wanting this equality. And really women will never be my equal so long as they choose to skip the equalities they find less advantageous. Little do they realise, that rESPONSIBILITY is the foundation of self-respect and character building.

@@missjones1640 Thank you for caring. Please forgive me if I inform you a bit more. Why do I comment like this? Well for a start it is true. And then I see the lives of so many people, children, parents and extended families destroyed through maliciousness & lies. In my world FAMILY is the foundation of our societies and our future. I understand you hoping that our lives are now calm and on a positive trajectory, but that will never be. My daughter is so damaged that although she is over 30yrs old now, she is hopeless. All those bigoted hypocritical entities which gush so much as if they care about family violence afford that daughter no recognition, let alone any aid. I do my best because i am Dad and that is a non-negotiable duty so long as I draw breath. As I see it, people like me do the real work while the pretenders line up for honours twice every year - well only after receiving all the funding intended for victims like my daughter. How can anyone be more contemptible? Anyway, I was lucky to get the last judge because he thoroughly tested all the allegations such as they were, and he cleared me absolutely. That happens very rarely, and its even rarer for an accused father to go on to gain custody and raise their daughters. So I am able to speak up - and so feel some obligation to do so. I am against any sexually preferenced policies or organisations. So I have only associated with groups who aid families regardless of sex race age etc. Certainly feminism and feminist policies never have aided my daughter. It might surprise you but the first violent abuse of her was observed when she was just six months old

Young is mistaken when he says that no one, other than the bosses at ITV, believed Stewart intended a racial slur. The issue here is that once an allegation is made no public or private institution, whether they accept the charge or not, is willing to contest it because they are afraid of a backlash. If they had supported Stewart there would have been an opportunity to expose the tactics of the cancel culture fanatics to the wider public, thereby making such malicious behavior harder to pull off in the future. @@robinbeckford I think the corporates fear the inevitable media back lash that would happen if one of them stepped out of line, not because the media give a toss about any of the issues, but because they could whip up a shitstorm that would hopefully sell them more copy, as for the online news sites, the more traffic they can direct to their site , the more advertising revenue they make. I think a lot of this confected outrage about one issue or offended minority or another is simply that, just the media outlets blowing something insignificant out of all proportion simply to increase their revenue stream, I blame the media for most of this crap we now have to put up with because they are the ones giving this shit oxygen

@@robinbeckford What happens is this: Governments pass Equal Opportunities laws, which every reasonable person agrees with. But then those 'equal opportunities' don't manifest into 'equal outcome'. Oh, why is that then? Don't ask, it MUST be because of 'systemic' bigotry! Therefore quota laws are required. And how is it to be made sure that such directives are enforced and adhered to? Why then, you must employ 'diversity and equalities' personnel into your HR department, who will be hot from the 'universities'. Then those people then 'inform and guide' the corporations, effectively taking over. Voila.

If he describes that tweet as careless then he has let lunatic leftism in at the ground floor of his Free Speech Union.
