@@rosedudesert4389 I think that the cool thing about Rochester is that he is a very complex character that can have different interpretations. My favorites are obviously Timothy Dalton and Toby Stephens because of how good they are and they make Rochester more three dimensional than other actors.

sensy 01 No, some actors are dumb as stones, especially the ones in the series Poldark, you wonder if they are really that ignorant about their character and the series itself. Poldark is a MYSOGINISTIC POS, the author was twisted and a total MYSOGINIST, yet the writer is spewing out the BS ABOUT IT BEING ABOUT LOVE, LOVING MARRRIAGE DURING HARD TIMES , WHEN IN REALITY IT IS A CESSPOOL OF ADULTRY, MYSOGINIST BEHAVIOR, WITH NO RESPECT FOR LOVE, MARRIAGE, TRUST ECT, I AM HOPING THIS BS TANKS NO REAL MAN OR WOMAN WOULD BUY THE WRITERS BS AS TO HOW THE HEROINE IS BEING PORTRAYED, MAKING HER ADULTROUS HUSBAND A HERO AND HIS DEVOTED WIFE WHO IS MORAL, STRONG, INTELLIGENT AND LOYAL ADOPT IS SLUMMING TO KEEP THIS DOG THE HERO, TOTAL BS AND UNACCEPTABLE, UNLESS YOU ARE A MIDDLE-AGED WOMAN WITH A CRUSH ON YOUR 30+ ACTOR,A FEMALE HARVEY WEINSTEIN, FOH.

I saw him for the first time last weekend in Jane Eyre 2006 (I only saw the 2011 ver, didn't really like it, and then was falling head over heel over 2006 ver immediately). I was amazed at Toby's acting. The combination of fun, brooding, desperation and hope at the same time is just... amazing. Then I learned who his mum is and I was like... oh yeah, no wonder. I know that he talked about Rochester and Jane being similar. I think the similarity is that they are both deep down very passionate people tossed around by difficult circumstances. This is mostly true for Jane. Rochester's suffering was brought about by a negligent choice that HE made. Jane's suffering was mostly from choices made by other people, including Rochester's.

Very interesting to hear him reading Bertha as an embodiment of a side of Rochester - we usually hear of Bertha as a shadow self of Jane. For my part, I see both Rochester and Bertha as parts of Jane’s psyche that by the end she must integrate.

Jane Eyre was my very first Victorian novel. But I'd already watched this version of Jane Eyre and absolutely loved it! Ruth Wilson was perfect for Jane and she played the part so well. Toby Stephens was the perfect Mr Rochester too, dark and sultry and moody. My favourite scenes are where he returns to Thornfield and realises that Jane has missed him, I think then he knows she has fallen in love with him. And the scene where he asks her to marry him. So well acted, I have watched this and it enjoyed so many times! Absolutely brilliant! Charlotte Bronte would have loved this adaption. 😚

They are similar in their life circumstances, as an orphan Janes family harshly mistreated her, and Rochester as well was definitely treated wrongfully and the similarity is an interesting comparison of the characters but they reacted differently to hard circumstances and this is the basis of the character study that is Jane Eyre. Nobility and trueness to ones self are possible no matter what happens in your life, it might not be easy but it is in the end the better road to take. I love Jane and Edwards story so much

I really agree, and the 73 version is GREAT for that! But I find this adaptation very close to the essence of the story. They take the time to show how the love develops for each character. I find the pleading after the wedding scene very believable as well. They have been cautiously intimate with kissing and touching all month...so the buildup in passion is there and it seems natural that they would have this conversation in her bedroom.

Amazing portrayal of Rochester. I have read so many literary critiques of why Rochester is a ‘bad man’ and absolutely fed up of it! Main reason is he locks up his wife in the ‘attic’. When will people realise this was the 19th century and what was the alternative? A lunatic asylum? Leave her in the house as normal unlocked so she bites people and burns them in their beds? Did he leave her to rot in the damp house he has far away? No. In fact he tried to save her in the end and all the servants too. There were no humane institutions for mental illnesses in those days and this was, for that era, the most humane thing he could have done. Plus he takes on the baby of his former cheating mistress knowing it’s not his…absolutely love this guy!!!

i think its more of like such productions dont really like finding main actors/actresses who dont look "good"...i mean part of the reason some audiences choose one movie or another is because of the people acting out the parts, not the story itself. and plus all that, toby stephens DOES have more of a rugged look about him rather than "pretty" (not that im complaining--he's handsome enough for me ;D)
