he left his record label at the time because he submitted his full album twice and they rejected all but a couple of songs both times. He got fed up left and released the album he wanted with this to lead off with.

Best part of that video, often missed, is she turned him down in HS because he wasn't good enough for a cheerleader. Fast forward a few years, and he has a whole cheerleading team swarming around him. Excellent song for everyone but especially men who definitely understand this harsh reality of the male-female dynamic.
