To Whoever’s in Charge - AJ Wilkerson

Комедия

This is not a Comedy Special.
I went off-script recently during a show at Helium Comedy Club in Portland and decided to just speak from my heart about my mental health, being diagnosed Autistic at 30, and medical marijuana.
I hope some of this makes you laugh, but more importantly I want it to make you all think, feel, and then take action in the federal legalization of marijuana and in mental health awareness.

My husband and I were at this show and this brought tears to my eyes that night, in a good way. I've been working in mental health for almost 9 years now and it was such an amazing experience to get to see such raw and genuine trust of the audience like this, but with comedy at the same time. We were blown away by your set AJ. Honestly, we are huge Jay Mewes fans, but we actually liked your set better. Thank you!!!

That's crazy. That's why as a primary care physician who treats patients (like me) with ADHD, I don't send positive drug screens for confirmatory tests that include THC If anything, I find benzodiazepines (schedule 4 controlled substances) much more habit forming and more dangerous than Marijuana (a schedule 1), especially Xanax. Those are two separate things. Xanax is much more habit forming than most schedule 3 controlled substances like testosterone. While I'm sure it happens, I've never known of anyone addicted to using testosterone. I've definitely know of many addicted to Xanax and Tylenol with codeine (another schedule 3 CS). I've seen Xanax addicts have seizures in the waiting room due to withdrawal. More dangerous because I've never seen anyone die from an overdose of testosterone or marijuana. But I know of many that have died from an overdose on benzodiazepines. All of the above are facts. But personally, I just hate Xanax. F*** the Pfizer CEOs and executives who relished in the fact that their Xanax would bring in more money than so many of their other drugs. And I'm a fan of this guy because his comedy is hilarious. I too have at least one of his disorders. I probably have both, but unlike one of my boys, I've not been diagnosed with being on the spectrum.

My wife introduced me to your comedy, and as someone else who is a late in life discoverer of their Autism, and also heavily self medicates with marijuana, you are an inspiration. I have watched several of your videos now, and cried because I felt so seen when you went on your tangent about how Marijuana saved your life, because I had never felt so seen in my life until your monologue. I truly hope I at the very least can see one of your shows, and I hope even more I can meet you in real life. You seem like a wonderful human being.

I was diagnosed at 41, and I was always terrified of pot, and terrified of the world. Now that I know I am autistic, adhd, and have a pretty good dose of central auditory processing disorder, that beautiful little bud has helped me to not be stuck in paranoia, anxiety, and endless self hatred. I have made my own growth happen, and I am no longer wasting my precious energy worrying about if I came across as “awkward” or “too much”. If I am indeed “too much” for people, then please don’t interact with me. I have found nothing but Superhero strength in my magical neurodivergence, and my ability to love, spread joy, laughter kindness, validation and respect. Even though it was meant as a mean joke, my dad never realized that my middle name Joy is truly what I thrive in now. I no longer have insecurities holding a silly soft fidget toy. I am getting better and better at not getting flustered when I really cannot understand what I am being told. And I will keep asking until I understand. I am empowered, every time I share with someone that I often struggle with conversations or topics, not because I am slow, (like most audyhd’s out here, I too have a slightly higher than average IQ), but because my little noodle ramen noggin sometimes is more focused on the pretty enamel red bowl I sit in, instead of how good the broth might be, lol! I finally had the interest to start looking for comics like myself. And finding you, Brother?!?!? JACKPOT. You speak my language, and I am now a fan. People, no matter if they’re mainstream, or neurodivergent, don’t realize enough the power in making yourself vulnerable, open and honest. It is indeed terrifying at first, but more and more people recover quick, and it 9 out of 10 times makes it an even more meaningful connection. Peace, good health, love, abundance and steady strength to you, my fellow Light. You are AMAZING!!! Namaste, Brother!

Mate, you are a bloody legend! I am constantly in tears laughing! But you started talking off-script and about the medication, I was right there with you. You spoke from the heart and was so on point with what you were saying. I have recently been diagnosed with ADHD, still trying to come to grips with it. What you spoke about, absolutely fantastic, the courage to speak about it, I wanted to high five you and give ya a big hug. Awesome!!

My husband and I got to see you in Charlotte NC. We have been fans for a while. We got to talk to you about our daughter with autism and how she is so misunderstood and bullied. For being smarter than her classmates and not being able to communicate. You assured us that she will be just fine and said how you could relate. But in the show we could relate with almost everything you said with what we have seen and dealt with our daughter. You kept telling everyone to stop with the pucker effect because you were going to address things that most people didn't like talking about. We totally understood where you were coming from. And we loved your insights on how people react to you and your self soothing (stemming). We love how you can make it where you are making people laugh with you about this stuff. You had my husband about dying laughing because we see these things in our daughter and sometimes you have to laugh and tell them hey it's OK, we understand, what just happened was kinda funny and talk to them about how it was funny and then she laughs with us about it. And then she will go tell her Nana and "Grandpaul" what she did and how it was funny. And Nanna has that pucker effect all of the time. Sorry I'm rambling, we love you and can't wait to see you again!❤

This means so much to me to know I had that lasting effect, seriously thank you!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

Thank you so much for this! My oldest son was diagnosed when he was 3 yrs old. Today most people dont even notice his tics its all just a part of what makes him who he is. My youngest son wasnt diagnosed until he was almost 22 yrs old & he still struggles so much everyday. He has a lot of those dark thoughts every day & I have so much guilt for not seeing the signs when he was younger. I should have been able to recognize... 🥺 *Sigh So anyway i just wanted to say that in these 9 minutes you made me tear up a bit, made me laugh even more, but most of all gave me hope. I just want to thank you sincerely for laying it all out there for all of us to see. Now im gonna f***in pull up my big girl pants & go smoke a fatty & have a few laughs with my autistic kid.

I would love to see your set live! I’m a Veteran as well, been living with 24/7 migraines since I returned from Afghanistan (over 14 years now), not one minute awake pain free. We were living in a legal state a couple of years ago and my dr recommend cannabis and it got me off of 7 different daily meds. Then we moved back to TX and had to go back on all of my meds. Have been advocating with fellow Veterans since to help change the laws here, making progress however slow. Also a mom to 4, 2 of whom are on the spectrum too. None of the other medications/procedures etc have ever worked well enough. Cannabis helps the pain and gives me strength to keep going. Like you, I have anxiety traveling. My parents live in a illegal state and the meds I get here in Texas (low level cannabis gummies this is now legal here) can’t leave the state. It’s not right. I’m glad you found something that worked for you and that you are still here with us! -April

Well done you ❤ seeing you let your guard down on this video and being as real and open about your struggles with the "system" was just awesome. Full support here from a Kiwi lady (NZ) who is also the mum of a young man (21) with a chromosomal deletion, adhd, with many autistic trait behaviours. Toby is on CBD oil and has been for 3 years.. best thing we ever did. That's exactly how I dress. People tease me for flipflops and shorts year round, I juat tell them "dress for the job you want." I dress how I want because the job I want is the job that lets me do that.

Massive MASSIVE love for this set/bit/human that is your standup and/or your story. I’m in a (not really, 𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙖 vaguely but actually pretty) similar situation to yourself, and hoh-boi is this a silly slap right in the ol’ feels button. That constant feeling of being about to implode can be crushing - so it’s nice to relate to something at such a sub Titan-Sub depth. If I was a stronger man, maybe coming across this video would be that final sign I needed to make me believe…..in the Crow-Cabal! Fuckin thought thieving Tattle-Tits! Trying to read my mind, eh? Well fuck you, ya gat damb Turkey Tyrants! Speaking of abrupt segues, it’s really just that struggle to find the right wave of motivation which lets me finally pull all double digits and several knuckles worth of fingers out of my own (piranha infested) de(moat)ivated ass. Alliterative anguish assault aside, you’ve got an absolutely incredible ability to build trust in the audience, and did an amazing job of rewarding that trust with a really fuggin funny bit of a story. Can’t wait to see you continue onwards and upwards dude. Not sure how you managed to operate on all those sick animals with all the earthquakes going on, but nonetheless I salute your service as a vet. 🫡

I wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until I was in my late 20's. I'm also phonically deaf so I have trouble understanding thick accents and can't learn foreign languages. This after failing 4 different foreign languages in college. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

I had a brain aneurism that nearly killed me! The medication’s, 28 a day, that they gave me to keep me alive made my life of bad quality. Then I smoked some marijuana, and peace settled upon me and I haven’t looked back. I’m of the pills, except for my blood pressure pill, and I haven’t smoked marijuana since, but it helped me, thank goodness get off all the other pills, please legalise it, and smoke it responsibly!
