To Understand President Donald Trump, Look To Pat Buchanan | The Last Word | MSNBC

Long before Trump campaigned on a nationalist, anti-immigrant platform, Pat Buchanan paved the way with his 'America First' campaigns. But there's a catch: Trump denounced Buchanan as being a bigot. Steve Kornacki explores the parallels between Buchanan of the 90s and the Trump of today. Steve Kornacki previews his new book.

Pat is one of my heroes, and I am the son of an immigrant myself. The man is speaking truths that unfortunately many just refuse to accept. Morals are important. Culture is important. And you can't spend your way to prosperity, government is far better at spending into oblivion no matter how noble the intentions of the left (or neo-con right).

Your reply- Proof you are a mere Trump parrot, incapable of forming an original thought of your own. Would you like for me to provide you a long laundry list supporting my claim? Here is a start: He is on record being pro choice and in favor of an assault weapons ban until of course that no longer benefited him politically. He played up the great relationship he had fostered through his meeting as a reason to elect him only later to flately deny he had ever met Putin prior to their official meeting they had after he became POTUS. He promised to lock Hillary up to mobilize his base only later to admit he was no longer interested and that "it played well" while campaigning. He promised better. cheaper. health coverage for all for votes, only to endorse a plan that did just the opposite without even lifting a finger to challenge Ryan's P0S bill. Alright your turn, school me, but you can't because you are so blinded by your hero worship you are unable to see you got duped. He say you and people like you as an opportunity, he is without principle, without convictions of his own what he does is driven purely by opportunity to better his and his situation alone. Yes he has indeed forgotten his so called "Forgotten American's" he promised to champion. Go!

3LD yeah total proof. Proof that our economy is booming. DOW 25k. No motivating principles at all. So unmotivated of principle and morals, that he literally, single handedly, denuclearized a country. A country that has been a threat to us and our allies for more than 60 years. Total proof. Yep total proof that Trump gives us results. There is more proof that he will be re-elected in 2020 than anything else. This is purely fake, propagandist entertainment that proves you are void of intelligence.

And “judge” pirro is the child of immigrants..... I guess a few million dollars a year would tempt me to say a lot of bad things like fox anchors too. Keyword there being Tempt. I wouldn’t. America is more important than money...... There are lots of tactics Stalin used happening too.

Whenever his face or the Republicans were on TV, it'd be propaganda to boost the party. Plus, he's not kicking out any legal immigrants. Only the illegals who can't be here unless they go through the process like everyone else.

To compare people (immigrants) who have no right to come here and who are desperately trying to get into this country to jews in nazi Germany, who knew no other home and were slaughtered for existing is beyond disengeous. You live in a fantasy world if you believe that and you should be ashamed of yourself.

I'm pretty sure alot of these 'shocking' results are due to a failure to appreciate the stats, and an overwhelming ignorance of the christian right by the reasonable public. The majority of the country holds to some watered down form of christianity that they think is sunshine and roses, and they don't notice that the people who take their religious seriously hold to their base biggoted, racist values - they're essentially the confederates. It's a horribly dangerous blind spot, as they're unwilling to admit that their religion can compel and foster such divisive hatred and bigotry. All the polls have said this consistently since when polling started and they thought to ask. Even today the media ignores who trump's base really is - they occasionally use 'evangelicals' which is a highly innacurate label, as not all far-right christians are of evangelical or even charismatic sects. If you want to see trump's numbers fall to near zero, all he'd have to do is bring in a judge that's not a far-right activist - one that respects stare decisis. If they say they support civil rights that would probably be enough for his ratings to tank - seriously.

I disagree w/ your comment & this video on that point; actually, President Trump also agreed in 1999(& long before then as well) w/ much of Patrick Buchanan's America First policies, particularly on Trade, Manufacturing Jobs, & Foreign Policy. During his short-lived run for the Reform Party nomination for President, Citizen Trump also ran on a Populist, Nationalist Platform. I think he also was strong on border security & illegal alien migration as well. I know he had never been shy about these political views of his in the media going back to the 80s & throughout the 90s. I recommend his 2000 political book, "The America We Deserve." It also some contains some fascinating insights about his father & the family business.

My late parents were great supporters of Mr. Buchanan and voted for him when he ran as independent. Unfortunately, the Republicans and Democrats are too powerful, and an independent most likely will never get in. I am a registered member of the Green Party of Florida and supported Dr. Jill Stein when she ran in 2016

1 Cor. 15:52 "In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last TRUMP:" G-D, out of HIS MERCY for AMERICA, spared us the "OWO" for now, a window of time to turn back to HIM..or we will loose our country... and BEST THING about TRUMP? G-D put him in office and only G-D can remove him...that reaper may come for you before he comes for TRUMP!

Believe it or not, there was a time in which i once attempted to be a 'moderate' Republican: (1) fiscally conservative; (2) socially tolerant; (3) ecologically conscious; and (4) prudently internationalist. But when Patrick J. Buchanan made that infamous 'An Ode to a Culture War' speech at the 1992 Republican National Convention in Houston, TX, i became so profoundly revulsed by the extremely incendiary tenor of that speech to the point that i simply could not in good conscience cast my first-ever presidential ballot for then-President George H. W. Bush. As a matter of fact, i ended up casting my first-ever presidential ballot for then-AR Gov. William J. Clinton.

Trump supporter here, tipping my hat. Fair reporting on this one. I'll easily admit Trump is very flawed. But I wish his critics could report his weaknesses and problems more like this, more regularly. They might eventually earn some of my respect back.

Bram Hepburn At least you're an adult who wants discourse. I acknowledge and respect that. For myself, there isn't one thing he's done that can compensate for the lack of empathy for humanity that he shows on a daily basis...his business ethics are, at best, reprehensible. And I've been observing for around 30 years. Thanks for listening. Be well.
