To Top Wrap Or Not To Top Wrap - 2020 SG Tribute/Boss SD-1

Definitely the right thing for this guitar. It sounds much better with the posts screwed right down and the bridge is safer with the strings top wrapped

Morning Paul, sounds great and i too have the SD1, used with caution ⚠️ 😂 it sounds great with Humbuckers too. I also top wrap my Les Paul but use Gibson Les Paul “ The Man” strings which have a small amount of red cotton wrapped around the sharp bits on the string 👍🏻 sometimes difficult to get them, but you can . Great sound and playing as usual fella. Cheers John

Thanks John. Good to see you. I hope you are well and happy. Yeah! The SD-1 is a pedal that, when you get it right, makes you wonder why anyone would ever feel the need to pay three figures for a drive..... and everyone should have a couple of Boss pedals just to remind them of what good design and ergonomics are. I have favoured D'addario strings for many years now, because they are always good sounding and work well but also because their airtight packaging works really well and even if you find a set under the bed, however long they have been there they'll be as good as new. Naively I imagined that Ernie Ball's 'foil' like packaging was the same until I used an old set I had had for a while and found the three plain strings with rust spots on them. I have used a few sets of D'addario NYXL lately and they seem to be really good - long life and very stable and they don't feel at all like coated strings sometimes do. I thought there might be a problem with the tuning settling with another ball end slipped on, but everything was good to go with no more than the usual stretching and bedding-in procedure. Thanks again for the kind words and continued support. I really do appreciate it :-)

Sounds great Paul. I always top wrap my stoptails despite how it may look. Mostly to decrease break angle. Except on my Gretsch because I didn’t want to scuff if I decided to return it. Although the point is moot now that I’ve equipped it with a Bigsby. Your tone is outstanding as always Sir Paul.

Thanks very much Donn. Good to see you :-) I would only top wrap if raising the tailpiece affects the tone adversely (which it did on this SG). In the end it's all about not putting strain on the bridge so it doesn't sag in the middle.

So for the hell of it a while back, I top wrapped an Epi L.P. Special, because I was putting some 11-52's on it and wanted to see if the additional "slinkiness" of the strings was a real thing. I think it is, but it's one of those perception things. Take care of that back, Paul.

Having said I couldn't feel a difference tension-wise I notice some overbending on this video so who knows? Hahahaha In truth I think it's because I mostly play 25.5" scale and Gibson scale length is always a small surprise to me :-) In truth I think you are right it is a 'perception' thing. As I said, for me it is all about keeping the strings away from the back of the tunamatic bridge. Thanks, as always, for dropping by and for taking the time to comment. I was going to vacuum today but have promised my back a day off :-)

I have given my back a day off from vacuuming....anoher day off from vacuuming I should say. Hahahahahaha Thanks ever so for the visit and the kind words. I'm glad you like it. It is somewhat counter-intuitive to think of a bridge that is basically built like a little box girder collapsing in the middle but that is what happens and I would prefer to avoid putting the strain on it, even though it takes a long time to happen. In percentage terms I would dare to say that Gibson, however much they got right, got more wrong than Fender right out of the gate. It's all part of life's rich tapestry though don'tya know.

My favourite album of theirs is Get Yer Ya Yas Out and I quote from Midnight Rambler a lot. Hahahahaha I think Keith needs to be playing rhythm on his own and not have someone like Ron Wood getting in the way trying to do half the same things. The balance was better with Mick Taylor :-)

@@delboyoelmundo4718 Unfortunately Gibson's history with bridge design is not glorious, thinking back to the first goldtops for example. I would say that you should definitely NOT compenaste for a raised action using the truss rod. Go back to the way it was. It is true that tunamatic bridges sag with the strings pressing down on them but that could take years before it happens and you can always replace a bent bridge :-)
