Doi Inthanon is the highest mountain in Thailand. I didn't even know about this place until I happened to be nearby on my scooter as I went around the Mae Hong Son Loop. And then a friend of mine mentioned it.
And since I was so close, I turned my scooter from Mae Sariang in the direction of the nearby small town of Mae Chaem. From there, the top of the mountain, and the highest place in Thailand was a mere 32 kilometers away by scooter.
This video is the story of that ride and my day on the mountain.

You're right that it was quite hard to do. Especially because I always wanted to do it on the parts of the road that were curving a lot and gave some nice views. But there was a lot of traffic moving fast around those curves, and I had to be very careful setting up the camera. I often had to ride long distances past the curves just to find a place where it was safe to turn around. And I would be gone so long that the battery in the GoPro would die or it would overheat and shut down and I would have to do it all over again. It was more challenging than I expected, and I had to solve a lot of problems. But it was also fun to do. 🙂

The really tricky part, to be honest, is the audio. My Rode Wireless Go requires line of sight with the camera, so I learned early on that if I want to film myself riding away from the GoPro, I have to put the microphone on my back. Then there's no audio as I ride toward the GoPro, but when I go past it, the audio suddenly kicks in. If I want to film myself approaching the GoPro, I have to put the microphone on my chest. Then the reverse happens, and I have audio as I approach the GoPro, but the microphone cuts out once I go past it. It's a bit annoying. And constantly having to move the microphone around between shots is one more thing to remember to do, and in the middle of fast traffic on a busy highway, it's easy to forget. And when I forgot, I ended up with no audio at all. It drove me crazy. 🙂 The new Rode system or the new DJI mics might be helpful for this because they can record audio internally right into the microphone itself and store it there. In that case, it wouldn't need to connect with the receiver at all. Though that would mean having to sync the audio up later on while editing, and that would also be a problem. There was definitely also a learning curve involved. I noticed that if I constantly filmed myself approaching the GoPro, it looked a bit weird. There was less sense of context. What I mean is that if I just kept moving the GoPro ahead of me down the highway, it didn't feel right or look right. I eventually figured out that it felt better if you got two shots: one shot approaching the camera and then a second shot riding away from the camera from the back. Then it seemed to feel better to me. And that worked out well because once you found a good tree or fence or sign where you can attach the GoPro, you can use that same location twice. You don't actually have to move the camera to a new spot. You take the first shot riding toward the camera. And then you simply twist the camera around so it is pointing in the opposite direction. And then you ride past it again and get the shot of you riding away. To me those shots looked better, anyway. Of course, the ideal would be to have someone standing at the side of the road filming you. Then they could swing the camera around and follow you as you ride past. But with no film crew, you gotta do what you gotta do. 🙂 That shot at 1:13 was a kind of happy accident. I was attaching the GoPro to a road sign right there, and then I noticed there was that round traffic mirror right above it. So I clamped the GoPro to the mirror to catch both angles. Of course, since it is a mirror, you can see the GoPro now, but I thought that might be vaguely interesting or funny. So I used that shot. There was a lot more going on in terms of capturing these shots, I have to say. I encountered so many issues and problems and funny situations. A true behind-the-scenes look at the process would probably be a Three Stooges comedy. So many crazy things happened as I worked out solutions to all the problems I encountered. It was certainly not nearly as easy as I thought it would be. But it's fun to do if you have the time. It also doubles or triples the amount of time you need for the editing...

Thank you. It's fun to shoot video that way. I've played around with that technique in the past, but I never did it seriously or consistently. The issue, of course, is that it takes quite a bit more time to do. You have to be your own film crew. 🙂

I don't know if this is a new policy or not. I read online before I went there that there was a 40-baht fee to enter the pagoda grounds. And that turned out to be true. I had to buy that ticket at the beginning of the road leading up to the pagodas. Maybe this is a new thing and no ticket was required before.

I actually attached the GoPro to a corn stalk. I found one that was thick enough and strong enough to hold up the weight of the GoPro. It was pretty funny, though, because the GoPro was hard to see in the corn field. I could easily have forgotten where I put it and never found it again. It was the same on the road. I kept thinking the GoPro had fallen to the ground or someone had taken it, but it was just that it's so small I couldn't actually see it right away.

Any tips you can give a new scooter rider riding downhill in Thailand? Even the smaller hills are quite steep here, not something I'm used to. I'm honestly amazed a Click could make it all the way up Doi Inthanon, gives me hope. Great vids, btw!

Interesting video. I think the geology most of the mountains in Thailand is volcanic. They're made up of cooled magma, but I could be wrong. Did you manage to get up to Pai? Looking forward to seeing the videos.

  • @PlanetDoug

That makes sense from the point of view of the rounded shape of the highlands in Thailand. But I don't know either off the top of my head how they were formed. I'd have to look it up. Yes, I did manage to get up to Pai. I loved it there. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed my time there. In fact, I'm turning around tomorrow morning and riding back to Pai from Chiang Dao. I have to race back to Mae Sot over the next few days, and I decided to just go back the same way I got here and ride the Mae Hong Son Loop a second time. But I'll only have one night in Pai this time, and then I'll be riding to Mae Hong Son the next day and then on from there. I shot quite a bit of video on this trip, but I've been so busy that I haven't been able to keep up with the editing process. There just isn't enough time in the day for that. But this Mae Hong Son Loop trip is ending soon, and I'm hoping to have the time to power through the editing of all the video I shot. 🙂

Hello, Norway. I think if I had to put together a dream list of countries I'd like to visit someday Norway would be in the top five. I don't know why, but I've always thought Norway would be a great place to visit, particularly on a touring bicycle. As for the scooter, I rented it in Mae Sot. I've had it so long now that I could have and probably should have just bought my own. But at the time, I had no idea how long I'd be able to stay in Thailand. And I just kept renting it month after month. Now, I'm not sure how I'd be able to live without it. 🙂

I normally just leave the helmet on the scooter, as the Romans do. But in this case, I completely forget that I still had it on my head. I just walked away from the scooter and up the hill to the temple with the helmet still on my head. And I had no idea it was there. That's how I ended up carrying it around. I usually don't do that. 🙂

  • @PlanetDoug

Ah. That makes sense. I assume you mean the music I put over the opening montage. I always have issues with selecting music. At the moment, I still only have access to the free KZread library. I don't have a subscription to Epidemic Sound or any of the big music providers. I often end up just clicking through the tracks in the KZread Audio Library and playing them one by one and seeing if it feels like it fits the tone of the video. And in this case, the very first track I clicked on was this one. And I knew it was an odd choice, and yet it felt right to me somehow. I liked it. It seemed to be music that might play over someone getting ready to go to work. Sitting in their apartment and having a cigarette and cup of coffee and thinking about the day ahead. Or someone sitting in a seedy bar over half a beer and contemplating the day that just ended. And that mood seemed to match the process of me drying off the scooter and packing up and getting ready for the day ahead. I could certainly be wrong about that and the music didn't fit at all. But it can take ages to select music. It's such a time-consuming process, and sometimes I get impatient and I just stick in the first track that feels vaguely right. If you start looking for that perfect piece of music, an hour can go by trying to find just that one piece of music, and it can drive you crazy.
