To Patagonia with a Canon RF 16mm f/2.8
Ғылым және технология
I have to be honest, I didn't hear about the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 lens until I was looking to replace one of my other wide angle lenses. I'm glad I found it. In this review, you'll see it's a great lens!

Today's photography video is a review and test of the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 lens. It's a great lens for vlogging and also has other photography uses.

Just an update from the future. I've decided that the RP was a little bit too wobbly for me. Post-Patagonia videos are mostly filmed on the Canon R6.
The footage looks quite good. I have that lens for my RP too and I think for that price point it is unbeatable. I bought it mainly for landscape and milky way photography. For my hobbyist purpose it is good enough. As said, considering the low price.
The photos are beautiful! Thanks for the review :)
I love how excited you get 😃

I also have the RF 14-35mm f/4 and it has been a wonderful lens for Patagonia and other adventures. Really happy I bought it - hardly ever regret that it isn't faster.

I bought the RF 16mm f/2.8 when it first came out. I use it for studio work. It's one of the best value lenses Canon make IMO. I use it on the R5 so I can crop in if needed.
Hey Brendan, I have been using this lens for vlogging since it was released and have a similar opinion to you on it. Three things that I found helpful. 1. Filters are difficult to find in such a small thread size, but Gobe make them which is helpful for video friendly shutter speeds. 2. The lens doesn’t have MF/autofocus switch on it, so I programmed another button to pause servo for quick video focus on and off. 3. This lens is the same size and weight as the RF 50mm 1.8 and therefore interchangeable on a gimbal without rebalancing. It even takes the same filter thread size :-) I use this on an Eos R and most recently on R8 and find the digital stabilisation to work well. Canons with ibis May give you ‘the wobble’.
It's pretty decent for photos. I sold my 16-35 f4 is and got both this and the 35mm. Lighter and fun to carry the 35mm for street photographer in a small waist bad. I don't use the 16mm that much (I also own a 24-70) but it's fun to have in certain situations, especially at that weight and price.
I'm digging the lens! As a Sony guy I've been eyeing the 11 1.8 for apsc
I've been meaning to get this lens for concert photos and also vlogging. I'm not liking the wobbling corners of the video, but i think i could turn off the IBIS for it. the colors and sharpness look great though! thanks for making this video, i think it convinced me!

Yeah, also remember that I'm often holding the camera with one hand, so the wobble is made worse. Also, no stabilization at all was used.

@@BrendanvanSon No IBIS? I have an R8 and I don't get that effect with my 17-40L.
Thanks for the video review. I have the same lens. Did you use an ND filter for your vlog? If so which one?
As Canon prices go for a 2.8 that is an exceptional lens. Great points and genuinely great review.

I have both those lenses. As you noted, the 16mm is unstabilized. So far I've found it unusable for vlogging, but it's interesting for photography. Your mileage may vary. The 14-35 F/4L is brilliant. I rarely shoot wider than 24mm but it's great for the occasional super-wide shot.

it is a brilliant lens. I'm using my 14-35mm for vlogging most of the time now, and using the 16mm only when I need to talk to the camera and am taking pictures with the 14-35mm

Certainly a more compact set up with the 16mm. Ive just bought the 24-105 RF for my R and looking at getting the 35mm for a trip to New York next month. Likewise was time to start switching over from EF glass to RF and will be interested to hear your thoughts on the 14-35mm RF

From the future, the 14-35mm is an amazing lens.
Can you compare it to the canon RF 10-18 mm lens
Great video as always Brendan, you will probably think I'm mad for saying this but I use the original DJI OSMO ACTION, the ROCKSTEADY is amazing, all my videos are now in 4K, it shoots in a flat profile which I have now made a preset for and I think it looks great for KZread, its small and I lob a wireless mic kit onto it, cheers chap

It's always been a dream of mine to have a set up like that. The thing holding me back is the audio. I would not use a wireless mic out of laziness haha

I watch these vlogs on my phone. So, quality isn’t high on my list. You could go back to the GoPro for all I care. Lol. Audio is a bigger deal for me. Glad you got to go back. You guys wanted to take a break from Patagonia. Never thought it would be 3 years, though.

I like the 16 mm, the 35mm is another budget lens that’s underrated especially for the price
The Canon RF 16mm f2.8 and the RP look like they work well together, more importantly I'm surprised it didn't pick up on any UFO action while flying over the Andes 🤣🤣🤣👍😎

STM Called a Stepper Motor, it converts digital pulses into mechanical rotation. In June 2012 Canon introduced a new lens motor design to address the issue of lens noise when shooting movies with an EOS DSLR camera. Digital pulses into mechanical rotation? ummmm
I have used the lee filter holder and polariser and turned off the lens retract function on my R6 , no problems so far .

Terrible vlogging setup and terrible video. It is great if you want to make your viewers sick. The new Sony A6700 would be a better choice. You buy new equipment to get better not worse. Your videos have always suffered from the weird background wobbling effect and this lens does the same. Have you not seen where true blogging cameras have advanced to? They don't get you viewer sick like this lens/camera setup will. Canon doesn't seem to have a good blogging camera like Sony has. I do have this lens and the 24mm that aI bought yesterday, but I use it on a RED Komodo. I guess I cannot stick a matte box on it, but I still need to put a filter on it, fortunately there is no retract with the Komodo.
@truthseeker6804

the lens doesnt cause the wobbly effect. the a6700 is an overpriced apsc camera with crappy ibis. he could rather get the canon r7 with dual SD cards and has good ibis.
