I met him once, very briefly, when he went to Nebraska Public Television station do a remote interview with Larry King about adoption. (Which is completely irrelevant to everything else I'm going to say, although everything else I'm going to say is only to justify my saying that I met him once. It's the circle of life.) This was the late 90s and at the time I'd never heard of him. After that, of course I would notice when he was in the news, and although I vote Democrat I did think he would have made a good president. But, as others have said, it's too bad he picked Palin as his running mate. There were many highly-qualified female politicians who'd have made better vice presidents, but unfortunately qualifications take a back seat to electability: except in this case the electability of Palin was seriously miscalculated.
Of all the politicians to have hosted SNL, Senator McCain was my favorite. He was self-deprecating, could take a joke and was actually quite good as an actor. He didn’t even break at times when other seasoned actors might. Though I didn’t agree with his politics, I always saw him as a fair-minded, down-to-earth leader who would buck his party when it was the right thing to do. His love for this country and commitment to service was evident. He walked the talk. Before I knew who the 2008 Democratic Presidential nominee or GOP VP nominee were, I seriously considered voting for McCain. He would have been a good President, I think. Had a candidate lesser than Obama run; had he not selected Palin, I think he would have won. I often wonder where the US would be had McCain been POTUS instead of W. Imagine, no Dick Cheney, no Karl Rove, no Rumsfeld. He would have selected two Supreme Court justices, too. I strongly doubt he would have pursued an invasion of Iraq had he been given the true intelligence. There are a lot of things I think he would have called BS on the spot. RIP, Senator McCain. You were one of the good ones, a dying breed for sure. You will be sorely missed.

That's Montreal in the opening photo, not Vancouver. I recognized it straightaway. The round building, for example, is McGill's Medical Library. ☺
