In this video we wrap up the plumbing of the 1000 rainwater harvesting system for the pole barn rainwater harvesting set up. Had some challenges to overcome, but in the end I believe we have a set up that will meet our needs. Now it still may need a booster pump, time will tell. Amazon links to most of what I used below, and if you use my links for anything, Amazon will kick back a few cents and we appreciate that.

I'm actually pretty darn pleased with how it turned out. I have used it quite a bit so far now that I have seeds started in the greenhouse.

Pretty cool tank covers, don’t like that 3/4 hose fill, seems counter productive. But never having used such a set up, there may be a reason why. I wonder if you could cover tote with firewood inside. As always, cool video and explanation as to what you’re doing. Have a good week.

Not sure I'm in love with the 3/4" either, I know I was certainly worried about it. But, it did fill all three tanks from just one steady day of rain. Guess 1000 sf of roof surface all going down one downspout helped. I think if I decide to and I can live without the shut off valve I can go up to 1" - just clamp a flex hose up to it. That would be almost double the intake area. Will keep an eye on it.

@@TryNewThings I wonder if you could rework it with a larger pipe by drilling out diverter?

Looks good. If that were at my place, I would need at least 2 carpenter bee traps on it or the wood would look like swiss cheese in about a year. They are evil around here.

So far I have been fortunate. They have yet to discover the zipline take off and landing zones I built last year.

Hey Chris..great video...wondering how the tanks are connected for filling...I understand the connection for drain...thanks

The tanks fill and drain using the same horizontal pipe along the front. As long as all tank valves are open they will fill to the same elevation. Do have to crack the cap on top a little bit to let air in and out as they fill and empty. Thanks for the great question. Subscribe if you have not already. Will be doing a comparison of water flow with and without a booster pump installed. Likely be April, waiting for last frost to do that. This time of year I leave the tank valves closed and leave horizontal connecting line open if I am not there so the pipe does not freeze and burst (threaded end cap)

How do the 2nd and 3rd tanks fill if you only have the intake going to one tank? Also, every time you open the spigot to use water, won't water also go down the overflow tube? I guess I need to go back and watch again to see what I missed.

The 2nd and 3rd tanks fill from the same horizontal piping that goes along the front. With all three IBC tote valves open, and the piping valve closed, the tanks will always seek equilibrium in height (one fills they all fill, one empties they all empty) I have the overflow set up so that when the water reaches 2" from the top of any of the 3 tanks it will run out the overflow vs continuing to fill the tanks. You do have to crack the top caps on the two tanks where the intake isn't so that air can be sucked in when emptying, and push out when being filled. I just un-screwed them one turn and that was enough to let the air pass in and out. Was the simplest set up I could think of. When not in use (winter) I keep the valves for all three tanks closed, and drain the horizontal line via threaded end cap so the system does not freeze. I also have to turn the valve off of the intake or else the first tank would continue to fill and spill out the top, because with the tank valves closed, the overflow would not be in effect. For 3/4 of the year, I would leave all three IBC tote valves open, intake valve open, and just let it run out the overflow if we got too much rain. Let me know if you have any questions. I have used it a bunch lately and seems to be working very well. I do intend on doing a video on adding a booster pump to the outlet to give me more pressure, but that will likely be in April.

Hey Chris, how is this all working with summer being hot now? Did they completely fill up?

They fill up pretty quick. I figure it takes 200-250 gallons to water the garden, so I can get 4-5 waterings in from full. I have just enough for one more so hope it rains. Been hauling water from the creek to keep the blackberries and apple trees alive 50 gal at a time.

Did you hang up the video cameras? Seems like a while since your last KY property update. That be great place for a garden… no shortage of water.

@@TryNewThings I've got some updates coming. We haven't stopped working. I haven't had time to edit and post the videos. I haven't had a great luck yet with the cameras. Our RV Shelter is now completed. Our next stage is the rain catchment system and I love what you did so I'm stealing your ideas and modifying them for our location!!! Which side of KY are you on? We get so much dew running off the roof every morning just south of Corbin, that I think we could fill the tanks just from that!.

One neighbor would get more than they bargained for for a view… I have thought about it though. I bought a booster pump I have yet to install that would make the shower even better.
