Mr Riggs which version of The Cowabunga Collection should I buy for a collectible? The PS4 version or the Xbox version? Or should I just buy both for my games collection? I’m leaning towards the PS4 version because I think it would be more collectible than the Xbox version

It's wild to me that we're having a retro revival of classic TMNT stuff while it also is still active IP with new media. It's one of those things that you never expected to still be around decades later, but nothing is ever gonna recapture the Turtle Mania of the late 80s-early 90s.

Oh wow, it's like they added all my favorite features from past retro compilations. SNK 40th had the full playthroughs, and the Kunio-Kun collection did the no-flicker thing. (As well as fixing bugs in the ROMs, with the option to play the originals.) I was already planning on getting this, but it's nice to know they really went above and beyond with it.

SNK 40th anniversary and that Arcade Archives garbage trash Ikari Warriors 1-3 hilariously didn't have unlimited continues in a game desiged to eat quarters. Unlike this that actually has unlimited continues for the arcade games.

😮Holy *BLEEP* ! I just saw a different video talking about this with some reveal content and then I watch your video JohnRiggs and you revealed EVEN MORE surprising content! I am very excited to play this now! Who knows maybe I can finally beat the first TMNT with the help of save states. LOL ( When I was growing up I only got as far as inside the Technodrome, but just couldn't get to Shredder due to the massive map this stage had and ran out of continues. ) Thanks again as always.

I'm glad Radical Rescue is getting some love in this collection. With all the Metroidvanias that have come out the last decade or so, I'm thinking some people may be happy to find it. When I was still collecting physical games, I couldn't find a US copy of TMNT3:RR anywhere to save my life, ended up importing a UK copy but it always felt weird seeing "Hero Turtles" on the label.

It was the opposite for me, I'm in the UK but couldn't find a UK copy so ended up finding a US 'Ninja' Turtles copy on Ebay instead, back before the prices for it went too high. I'm old enough to remember some of the original comics being available over here before the 'Hero' Turtles cartoon aired though so 'Hero' Turtles always seemed weird to me too, lol

This has to be the nuttiest compilation game I've ever seen.

yo dude, that was an excellent video! What a plethora of content! and you laid it all out really well exploring the bonus content.

For me, the 2 arcade games, Snes Turtles In Time and Hyperstone Heist is main reason I'm getting this. I will try the Gameboy games too. Then there's all the added goodness. The manuals, rewind, all that stuff takes it over the edge. If I didn't know any better, I would have said this collection was handled by the experts at M2.

It was pretty controversial at the time. IIRC, it was the first time ads were included in a video game which wasn't otherwise about the property being advertised. (Ie, ignoring brand-specific mascot games and such.)

DW guys it all plays at 60fps on Switch (of course only if the game was originally like that), it's just not enabled for this video on KZread. You could just call it "full speed" if you will.

One thing i noticed for the arcade game is some of the voices were removed for some reason. Like when you die. You don’t here “aww! Shell shock”

Nice review John. I've been hyped since I found out earlier this year before the release date about this collection. When shredder's revenge came out, that was to cater to all of us as the fans, waiting for the cowabunga collection to come out, that was better than good. Me as a gamer, I am more into 8 bit and 16 bit gaming way more than keeping up with today's day in age in videogaming. Though more importantly, atleast with 8 bit and 16 bit, it is the reminder that there are the little things that scream shut up and take my money at, and atleast digitally it is affordable for childhood nostalgia.

The Flicker removal is cool. I might buy it because of that.

Having Rewind ability for this game is just perfect

Digital Eclipse hasn’t always had a great reputation. But they’ve been crushing it lately. The Street Fighter and Samurai Shodown collections were basically perfect. But THIS? They went above and beyond with the Turtles extras! If the games perform well, this might be their very BEST.

Street Fighter 30th lacked control options, and also had some emulation issues. Some were ironed it, but some of the issues persist to this day. The 3 series games were originally mono, then stereo but the audio was flipped. And there’s still no option for 3P 3K controls.

The Street Fighter collection was far from perfect. They used the version of SSFIIT with the unfair AI, no real training mode, terrible netcode, among its many flaws.

Another change is the original TMNT theme found in the arcade version has been replaced by the 1UP Arcade cover version.

They literally rewrote the book on how to do a collection this is such a freaking awesome game and gift for turtles fans everywhere. I was a little frustrated when it wasn't available in the eshop when it said it was gonna be available but I didn't mind waiting a few extra hours and damn was it worth it. I mean considering Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the arcade game I played through it when I was little at my brother's birthday party we had unlimited tokens and we played through the entire game. So that was my experience with that game. But Turtles in Time that was a major part of my teenage years and it's great to be able to finally relive that. What's interesting is gameplay wise TMNT the arcade game doesn't really hold up that well (combat is pretty simple) but it holds up more when it comes to like style and presentation which is fantastic. But back then it was a freaking treat. It's just now when you have games like SoR 4 and you have games like Shredder's Revenge it seems pretty shallow gameplay wise. But damn is it worth playing just for the presentation and the online.

This release looks pretty legit. I need more details but this looks pretty damn good.

As someone who grew up with the 2003 turtle and that era of games I sincerely hope Konami makes a cowabunga collection 2. You could take the console games and the handheld counterparts for 7 more games.

I bought the digital versions for the Switch and Xbox One S! I was so hyped and hooked on to this Ninja Turtles retro collection! It's a definite must have if ur a retro gamer since the NES and the 16-Bit Sega and SNES days! I'm 41 and i feel like a 90s kid again! 😄🐢 🍕 🎮

All we really need is a compilation of Midway/Bally/Williams arcade games and we’re set.

I have no intention of getting this but you definitely got me hyped for it.

When I saw the T.V. portion, I thought it would have the intros. Still awesome. Got this from pre-order from Walmart.

After so many half assed collections out there in recent years, this one really seems like it went all out, this is the kind of standard I wish all companies would shoot for!

Great video and very comprehensive! My only nerd nitpick is that film is shot at 24fps, not 30. But I understand the comparison you're making. Essentially watching a 24fps movie (or 30fps video of some kind) on a modern display with a "smoothing" filter to multiply the frame rate resulting in the "soap opera effect".

I am looking forward to this collection. Just a nice smattering of retro TMNT games.

Hyperstone Heist and the NES version are big parts of my childhood. Much love to them for releasing this.

I have played almost all TMNT video games from NES/SNES/Sega Mega Drive console library and I enjoyed while I'm playing. I didn't check out the GB TMNT games. But with tomorrow release of TMNT: Cowabunga Collection I will have the possibility to see in-game those GB games and read the manuals. I like how Digital Eclipse made well the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary and SNK 40th Anniversary collections just like Disney Classic Games compalition. 🙂

I would like to see a rom hack for an arcade hack for Manhattan project.

That option to get rid of the flicker and slow down shouldn't even be on this because the flickering and slow down is part of the first TMNT gaming experience.

definitely been on my must-buy list since it was announced! Not really a deal breaker to lose the pizza hut stuff I mean they kinda already got it back in the physical edition of shredder's revenge, yeah? but super stoked to be getting this hoping to snag it next month if I can find it on amazon!! heard digital eclipse went above and beyond yet again so, looking forward to playing this one!

I still have the TMNT Arcade game cart along with the manual. Never cut the coupon out! Too bad I didnt keep the original box though.

I like when you boot up turtles in time the arcade version that you see the winners don't use drugs logo. It's the little things

It's so weird watching this knowing they're still using a song from the first 2003 TMNT game in here. I love that game so I'm glad to hear it get any recognition but why put it here when the game isn't in the collection? Also this is shaping up to be one of the best TMNT collections out there, I'm so glad it exists. Really cool extras, great to see them really go out of their way like that.

Maybe it’s a tease to know that the 2003 series games may be included in the collection in the future.

I pre-ordered for the sole reason to finally beat defusing the bombs 33 years later.

Wow! This is a great review. I was on the fence about getting this. All the additions and bonuses make me want to get it. I'd love to actually beat Turtles 1 on the NES after being frustrated by it as a kid. Save states are a god send, and were the only way I could beat the Castlevanias on NES and SNES (I suck at games)

My sister and I played the TMNT acrcade this at a retro arcade/ restaurant. It has been years since I actually played this and it was her first time. Gotten to the end and I remember the Shredder tips when there is the clones are out. We beat the game in one run.

Really looking forward to this.

Can’t wait to play this one. I have it pre-ordered. I hope Konami follows this up with a Bucky O’ Hare Collection.

I noticed in patch 1.0.1 that they removed the tmnt 2 arcade intro song from the tape cassette when you go in to the tmnt layer to play songs from games

Used to play the heck out of all of these games on Nintendo consoles (except TMNT III). Can't wait to give this one a spin.

I love the fact that music is on cassettes.

I hope Konami will make a similar compilation for their Tiny Toon Adventures games in 2023. There were ten Tiny Toons games, and they were generally well-received. I also think such a compilation would make great tie-in merchandise for the Tiny Toons Looniversity reboot, and Stephen Frost, the head of Digital Eclipse, has expressed interest in such a project.
