TMJ patients facing big out-of-pocket costs for treatments

Treatments for temporomandibular joint disorders, known as TMJ, can fall into a "medical-dental divide," leaving patients with out-of-pocket bills that can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. A joint report from CBS News and KFF Health News sheds light on the financial burden TMJ patients face as some fall into a spiral of ineffective care and futile surgeries that do more harm than good.

This is also the fault of insurance companies. Insurance companies are scummy businesses.

I’m one of the many who’s forced into this jaw surgery bc that’s what the “specialists” say would work. I also - PAID FOR PAIN!! So glad this was aired so things can MAYBE change one day!

We need more doctors properly trained in how to treat this condition. It’s not new. Medical and dental programs need to do a much better job. Of course, it would be nice if the insurance would recognize TMJ/TMD as a real medical condition and stop disallowing coverage for treatment.

I was referred to a surgeon for TMJ shortly before I was laid off. Turns out the cause was a protein supplement I was taking for years and could no longer afford

This is why we need to TRY to ignore new but minor (even when we think it’s not) symptoms and just live with it!! The more we complain the more we dig a hole…. The body does weird things. Wait until it really seems serious. All she had was ear popping. I mean….. Come on!
