TL866-II EPROM Converter - Getting ready to burn Amiga ROMs!

Ғылым және технология

In preparation for Amiga OS3.2's release I need to be able to program some new Kickstart ROMS. My TL866 isn't directly compatible, so lets look at a kit to convert it to accept 27C400 EPROMs.

Great video! It’s awesome to see someone else building and using one of the Adapter kits. Thanks for filming this. The Kitset version includes the SMD pre-soldered to ensure ease of assembly for those with only thru-hole experience. Note, the pre-Assembled version also includes an ultrasonic clean for a professional flux free finish. For the 27C400 (40 pin), the adapter simply adapts directly to the TL866 supported 27C4096 pin-out, so the bank switch is unused / can be in any position. The other devices in the family (27C800 / 160 / 322) are all 42 pin, and the Adapter is then used to also switch the upper address lines, to facilitate programming in multiple (2x, 4x, 8x) 4Mb / 512KB banks. @5:39 Just below the base of the ZIF the PCB notes: “EPROM to base of ZIF”, as a little reminder of the EPROM position. I do highly recommend investing in a safely enclosed UV Eraser. The preferred UV wavelength for EPROM erasure is 2537 Angstrom (253.7nm), which is indeed in UV-C range, as you noted. Subscribed. :-)

Thanks for the feedback! Pinned your comment so other can read a bit more detail about the adaptor. It's funny as I saw the note about the positioning but totally forgot while recording. I really should script these 😆

I haven't learned to burn the 27c800 yet, you have to burn the data twice as they are 1mb data and the roms are 512k. My 1200 died last week, the erase I found for $20 on amazon came in and burning Diagroms was really handy. As well as was able to put my A3000 on OS 3.2. The cool thing is the diagroms for the A1200, A3000, and A4000 are the same set.

Any chance at making one that can get us up to 25v for flashing my arcade EPROMs? I'm having to bend pins out and hook up a bench power supply.

@@josephfanning1241 I still have my old ISA bus programmer for any old 2716 / 2732. But I should retire that one day. :-) I have read that the older TL866A/CS (which goes to 21V), will successfully program the 25V EPROMs, but I have not tried this for myself. Creating an adapter for boosting to 25V may be interesting option, if none already available? The other option (for an all-in-one solution) is probably the newer T56, which I understand goes to 25V. But that's an expensive option, especially if you already own a TL866 etc.

Nice I did this with 3.1.4 when I got it on my 1200 it's so satisfying when it boots up with the new date.

Can someone direct me to where I can buy this adapter?

Hello Chipnotic. Since his Video is already 3 years old: I wanted to burn my ROM with that TL866II+ with that adapter. In the mantime the TL866II+ is obsolete and pretty expensive to get. The successor is the T48 (kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZmaKpc-IhrqnqcY.html). Do you probably know if that adapter works with the T48 too? I just watched this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aIyVo8Wonbu-os4.html where he bought an already built adapter, but I was actually interested to build my own like you did so just curious if anyone tested it if this adapter works with the T48?

Do you have video showing how to actually burn rom? BTW. Thank you for this one, at least I know how to read it :) Can you add something about bite swaping? I got CD with OS 3.2 and would like to burn my own ROM, but I'm not sure about it.

It been years, but Eproms can be erased with natural light. Unfortunately I have no timing info so I'd recommend taking some less critical Eprom and test erasing.

Hay DIYTAO, you right. I did look into free ways to erase, was going to take in the region of several days according to some articles using sunlight (and I don't get a lot either haha!). I found an old air filter/purifier that has a UVC bulb in it and have a new video in the works!

Yeah I got a bad 3.2 rom using Power ISO to extract it from my 3.2 Iso "Amigastore.eu allowed the preorders to download a ISO when the stock came in to fill our CD orders" I've had very little luch reasing these with a uv light. Turns out you have to blast them for 50 minutes in a uv box to erase them. Maybe in a Day room after a few years they might erase, but inside a sealed box they are likely safe.
