Title Screen - Mario Kart DS - Deconstruction with Oscilloscopes
Ойындар
This video deconstructs the Title Screen track from Mario Kart DS in the form of oscilloscopes, notes, and separated sounds to get a better understanding of what is included in this song.
Original track is composed by Shinobu Nagata.
I decided to do some more research into the process and came out with a much easier and less time consuming alternative to making these videos. I think it's a lot cleaner now, and translates the oscilloscopes very nicely. I also chose to do another MKDS video because why not.
If you have feedback don't hesitate to leave a comment. Thank you for watching the video.
I have original tracks too! Most of them are chiptune:

I don't know if you're still here or not, but I really want to know how you made these since I have some music i want deconstructed, and it would be easier to do it on my own.

On a really simplified level: 1. I used vgmtrans to extract each song from the rom 2. Exported the songs into the highly compatible midi format with sf2 3. Deconstructed the channels to my liking in a generic music software and exported each one into a streamed sort of file (mp3, wav, etc.) 4. Put each file into SidWizPlus which does all the oscilloscope work. If SidWizPlus doesn't work that well I've heard of Corrscope but haven't given it a try. It may take some time to render. Hope this helps, if you have any questions I'll try my best to answer them

@@deconstructionproductions9348 thanks for answering! I was worried that I might not get a response! How do you get the instruments to sound right in the midi, exactly?
@deconstructionproductions9348

@@slumburger1145 if I remember correctly, when you export a midi in vgmtrans you are also able to export a soundfont file (sf2). This essentially applies the instruments to the corresponding channel. Just make sure in your music software that you have a feature to overlay the soundfont on the channels. Hope this helps!

You’ve found a better way to deconstruct DS music, while also making it sound cleaner? Nice.

I wouldn't necessarily say the audio itself is cleaner, but the picture that was output is a lot better.

@@deconstructionproductions9348 No, no, he's right. The audio sounds cleaner, specially compared to the original hardware. I'm guessing the samples are actually higher quality and is the DS hardware itself that downsamples them?
@matthewtaylor445

@@runningat50hz That honestly wouldn't suprise me as the ds not only had to work with dogwater speakers but had to save memory bandwidth on its CPU to actually stream the game to you as well. Those clean files are all there but the ds couldn't play them without cutting a few corners I think? I may be wrong so please correct me if I am but I think thats why :)

@@runningat50hz I wouldn't be surprised - this game specifically even had much higher quality samples in earlier builds (I'd kinda like to hear this with those samples tbh)

The DS outputs everything at 32768 Hz (It's mentioned in the official hardware docs). So yeah it is downsampling the result. "The sampling frequency of the mixer is 1.04876 MHz with an amplitude resolution of 24 bits, but the sampling frequency after mixing with PWM modulation is 32.768 kHz with an amplitude resolution of 10 bits."
I love the second section of the deconstruction. It sounds like it would be part of alternate credits
1:53 i really love the work that the piano does in this section (channel 5), i dunno it sounds really nice!
So that explains everything huh? The DS still has that thing of older consoles, when there's no room for sound effects, some channels stop playing to give priority to the sound effects. This is very noticiable on MKDS... Great video! I've always seen videos about Genesis deconstructions but never DS ones!

Funny you mention, the Genesis deconstructions of carpathia808 were in fact what got me interested in this sort of thing. Definitely recommend. But yes, the DS does do it like the old consoles.

The infamous SMK title theme motif that has been featured in every game (except GBA)
Such a funky theme song, I so love the DS and its awesome, wacky and very recognisable 'sound', great video.
If you're still here, could you potentially look into how Tick Tock Clock's music is constructed? I'm only wondering how little channels have been used (it always sounded a bit too empty to me, especially the intro and the loop ending)

Just found you today. Already in love. This is the niche content I’ve been looking for for a long time.
When listening to music, I enjoy listening really hard to hear each different instrument it plays, this makes it so much easier.
This whole track is such a vibe, it’s so good
This is so interesting !! Hope you will make more in the future ❤️
I love these decontstruction videos, every combination of channels feels different!
It's amazing! I really love to know how the music is made, and your work is super clean! Keep up the good work! 😄
simply beautiful
I'd be really interested in a breakdown of the Mario & Luigi 3 soundtrack. In The Final would be especially interesting. Nice work!
Yes! I’ve been waiting so long for another one of these masterpieces, and this one did not disappoint. I love everything about it, especially being able to hear things I didn’t notice before such as the guitar plucks on channel 4. Being able to really comprehend what makes a song so great is astounding to me, and it gives me motivation to make my own songs. Thank you for making yet another amazing video!Keep up the good work and have a great day.

How did I not get a notif that you're back? _WTH YT?_ Good stuff, can't wait to see what's next man!
I don't fully understand the audio chip's capabilities on the DS but it's clear that some work was put into making the real instrument samples sound right, or working around limitations where that wasn't possible. The bass and piano are really clear sounding (the attack varies nicely based on the "force" or volume of the sound). Strings and horn have always been complicated to sample, seems they really went all-in on the electronic vibe instead of hyper-realistic with those, I like it honestly.

The build up was SO SATISFYING
So Channel 3 is the one that gives me the chills while listening to its presence before the loop.
Keep up the good work
Also I like the color coded channel numbers.

These are so cool! As a suggestion, maybe in future videos could you add some sort of subtitles somewhere on screen describing which instruments you are isolating at the moment and maybe why you chose to isolate those instruments for that particular loop? I'd love to see your insight on those kinds of things. Keep up the great work!

You should do this with an SM64 DS track, like the slide music or bob-omb battlefield.
Very nice! Can you do delfino square? It’s a bop!
I saw this channel the other day and i subscribed, even though i knew it was abandoned for 11 months. I can believe that i revived it in a few days. Btw, can you try to deconstruct Airship Fortress? Thank you! (Pd.: Airship fortress is not my favorite, but you've already done my favorites)
lol the funny part is sometimes it osunds like this if your listening to only one speaker while in surround sound
I wanna learn to do this for pure personal enjoyment as I love deconstructions like this. That being said, can you please please please add GBA Sky Garden (the DS version from this game) to your list? that would make my year

I wonder if you could make GCN Luigi circuit deconstructed from MKDS at least because in double dash the music was composed differently.
2:20 sounds like a mariokart track maker
I would love to know how you do this! Do you use any special software or is it all manual?
Can you do the Overworld Themes from Spirit Tracks? (Full Steam Ahead/Realm Overworld, Troubled Realm, and Before the Final Battle)
This is the best Mario Kart game. First to be online, fully 3D on a portable, fun game modes, good controls, great soundtrack, good tracks. Just what does mkds do wrong?
How do you get the music files from the game itself, because I would love to be able to do this one day
