Titanic: Honor and Glory - What Went Wrong? (A video essay and 10 year retrospective of the game)

Ойындар

After a decade of Titanic: Honor and Glory, let’s take a look at the story of its development - from its humble beginnings, through to their viral moment in 2016, and then onto their eventual downward spiral in more recent months. But can they achieve what they set out to back in 2011?
The last ten years have been quite the ride, and with not much to show for it, members of the Titanic community, fans, and even casual observers on the sidelines, are keen to see what the future holds for this game.
And when it comes to the inner-workings of this project, overpromising and underdelivering is just the tip of the iceberg...
A big thank you to /u/afty for being such a huge help with this video and for providing the script.

Im glad that the truth was discovered b4 she died. She told anyone that would listen that titanic broke in half. Now everyone knows she was right. Im sure that brought her a lot of peace in the last years of her life. Even tho she was very young, she remembered that night clearly.

I remember the heyday of THG. When Ken Marschall was announced to be a consultant on the project, I thought there might be a chance that Ken could get the team and James Cameron together for funding purposes. Obviously the funding wouldn't be a problem, but also, james cameron being involved would have given THG major mainstream credibility. It's a shame that this project will probably never become what it was dreamed to be years ago.

This is a great explanation, thanks for putting this up. I've stayed subscribed to the channel ever since 2018 and followed it over then and the next year, but stopped following it closely and have kept a rather modest ear on the uploads ever since. I'm not really apart of any online Titanic community that closely, but really enjoy Titanic content whenever it pops up (and then I get swooped right back up in that interest again). I've never consciously payed attention to any of this drama, but it was clear just by observing it that something was wrong and hearing everything now explained out loud given the context really isn't surprising. I feel like the project has been around way too long to just die out. There's 100% a path to make something out of the demo which was so mind blowing in its quality to everyone who explored them. I saw someone say making a museum and leaving it at that is their best bet and I think that sounds right given the past struggles. Best of luck to them.

It has nothing to do with egos. It has to do with they never planned to use your money to make a game in the first place. Some of their slop screenshots look like they were taken from 1996's Titanic: Adventure out of time, an old CD-Rom game that actually got produced in less than a year. Video games usually take so long to develop because they need to be scripted. You've got to create environments out of thin air. This is a ONE SETTING historical event where everything down to the last detail is already known. The technology to CODE GAMES was already there in 1996. lol But here you are 11 years later pretending this wasn't anything other than a scam to take crowdfunders for millions.

Things like this happen in business all the time. Enormous egos collide, and chaos and collateral damage ensues. Tom seems to be passionate about history, but unfortunately he isn't a very good video game developer or producer. He was searching for "Honor and Glory" for himself with the game, which led him to over-promise and under-deliver. The project is probably better off without him, and after a failure like this he is probably happier without the project. It's not all bad news though. Since he enjoys being in front of the camera, maybe he should start making history documentaries instead? He has some interesting stuff on his channel, and feels like a natural host.

  • @artistsanomalous7369

Yes, this happens in business all the time. Initially promising looking projects suffer from poor organisation, a clash of personalities, trouble attracting funding, and so on, and get delayed, suspended or cancelled. But normally, nothing substantive is announced publicly until major issues have been resolved, the basics have been fully worked out, and proper deals are in place (especially investment, the most important thing to get the damn thing made). What the big guns definitely don't do is to announce a project and use the announcement itself as a means to attract funds in the form of personal donations from fans, and then go through a neverending start-stall-stop cycle which drags on for over a decade as thousands of those fans watch in the stands and go from being excited to impatient to anguished. The trouble with THG is that it's sort of midway between a professional operation and an amateur fan project. It generated all the hype and expectation of a professionally made product, but had none of the same organisation or discipline. Any professional project which had suffered the same level of trouble and setbacks that THG has would have been cancelled long ago. After all, a company only exists to make a profit, so if it becomes obvious a project is only wasting time and money for them, it needs to be cancelled immediately. But Vintage Digital Revival was specifically founded to make this game, so it's practically synonymous with it.

I knew that wasn’t going to be possible. I thought they would make many of the passengers and crew, but I was familiar with the list, and some people we know so very little about. Some of the ones who were immigrants from the Middle Eastern countries and who boarded at France but died in the sinking, we know next to nothing. Some people in those days traveled under assumed names, some had names that were spelt wrong by clerks. Just one example: there were two groups of passengers traveling under the surnames of Cacic and Cor. They each bought tickets from the same White Star agent. None of either group survived, and that is the extent of our knowledge of them. We don’t even know if the persons with the same last name in each group were related. It’s possible they were part of an extended family, but that’s just unconfirmed speculation.

As a developer (albeit not in the games industry) I found myself thinking about the technical requirements for modelling the entire complement of passengers and crew when that claim was made, and I simply couldn't for the life of me figure out how they ever expected to do it. To populate the larger open spaces on the ship (e.g. the Third Class public room under the poop deck) with an NPC count even halfway reflective of what it would really have been like would have sucked up an astronomical amount of CPU and memory to implement in a convincing manner.

The Initial promise, a complete walkaround of the ship and a sinking mode sounded reasonable. The new one, which includes that and a way to ambitious storyline + multiplayer doesn't sound reasonable at all. If we see a Titanic:H&G, I will genuinely be surprised by now. But currently, too many side projects have been brought about than needed. Too many things that don't relate to the main game are suddenly appearing- and with the new issues be brought about Tom aswell not really helping me gain any hope. Because if they want to do a AAA game they won’t be able to accomplish it with just the group of volunteers they have now. They just posted some updates but they said they have no paid staff working on the game at all, so everyone is working on it during their free time. At this rate the game will be ready in another 10 years if we’re lucky 🙄

Fascinating stuff, and very well and calmly explained given the d-r-a-m-a involved, the tea was served hot but not scolding. Also hats off for taking the plunge into reddit for research too, that must have been quite an experience. I only became aware of THG when they released the real-time sinking video in 2016, and until about two weeks ago I had no idea it was part of an effort to ultimately create a video game. It's amazing to find out this has been playing out over 10 years, and a shame to see youthful optimism squandered, there was a decent idea that could have lead somewhere, but perhaps unsurprisingly ego and ambition clouded things. They did incredibly well to get the success they did from the real-time sinking video, so it's a pity it was that success which seems to have been the catalyst for the wild increase in the scope of their ambition.

Very interesting. I admit I had little to no knowledge of some of that history. In the fall of 2019 my wife and I attended a swing dance get together. I remember being surprised that Tom was there. I was probably the only person in the room that recognized him. I knew he lived not far from where I’m from. Part of me wanted to talk to him but part of me held back. I’m a professional editor by trade and I’ve often wondered if I should ask to work on the update videos and other videos that THG put out. From my observation they definitely needed some work. I had seen Tom’s “credentials” and felt I was likely to be snubbed if I approached him. I’ve always felt that I had a decent ability to see BS in people. Just subtle things they do or mannerisms give off that aire. Regardless I’ll never know how that would’ve went down but from my perspective I would have no hesitation speaking to James, who I feel is a much humbler face to THG.

Titanic: Honor and Glory is a good example that ambition is no substitute for competence, it's unfortunate this game has been in development hell for so long, and it was not helped by Tom, who alienated fans, investors and historians alike. Although the team finished Britannic: Patroness of the Mediterranean, they wasted time when they could be working on the Titanic, especially since the Britannic could be a full virtual museum itself, as the theoretical passenger ship, and as the hospital ship. When I played that game, I was indeed in awe of the details of the Britannic, nevertheless, I was disappointed that I could not explore more of the ship, so with each year passes I get less optimistic for Titanic: H & G, sensing the game may never be completed.

  • @98RudolphXmas

That wouldn‘t make any sense. The Britannic was a part of the Olympic class so on the inside they wouldn‘t have been so much difference at all. The only place where you could have seen some difference would have been on the sun deck to see all the super davits plus the section of the Gymroom and the platform on the heck for the steering wheel to manover the heck into place when stopping the ship. Also there wasn‘t much on the Britannic due to the fact she was confessed by the British goverment in WW1 to serve as a hospital ship.

For the past ten years they've apparently been willing themselves into thinking a breakthrough investment was just around the corner, otherwise the project would have been cancelled long ago. They probably overestimated the interest it would inspire. Of course everyone knows the story of the Titanic, but the idea of a full digital recreation is only going to appeal to a small group of hardcore enthusiasts. They've basically been coasting on the attention generated by the sinking animation for 7 years now. To be honest I only heard about the game in 2019, and I was like "Oh, a 100% digital recreation of the Titanic? That sounds cool. Can't wait for it to come out in a couple of years or so. Wait a minute, what do you mean they've been working on it since 2012?".

  • @AmazingKevinWClark
    @AmazingKevinWClark Жыл бұрын

Making South Hampton demonstrates their lack of experience in game design. Yeah in theory that is a cool idea but when you consider what's important to the game itself and the events of the sinking, that content doesn't belong and is wasting a lot of time. They say they need attention from the big boys but those companies would never try to do this either. They cheat a lot of elements in games when the player can't get close or interact with something. A city in the distance that you can't get to may be an image or a simplified model because the players will never be able to get a better look at it. The citadel in Mass Effect is a prime example of this. It keeps the demand on rendering and processing down. That's part of why the first few Mass Effect games ran better than the Witcher series despite some of them coming out after the Witcher 2. But to be fair the world's are different. The Witcher is a full open world and is doing everything it can to fill every part of that with high end graphics, while Mass Effect was open world to some degree but greatly restrained you in smaller areas.I admire what the Witcher wanted to do with their games and love true open worlds but it does end up being very demanding on the player's computer and thus may not be the best type of goal for every game or company. These are things you need to consider while planning a game.

Thanks for an even handed and fair account of what got us to this point. I don’t use Reddit or the other places mentioned in this video so did not realize the extent of dislike which had developed of Tom. He always struck me as a first rate storyteller who one could easily picture doing excellent history documentaries....but I never did over the years see the credentials which would have made me confident about him being a successful game developer. At a certain point I guess I implicitly started assuming the game was vaporware and was in it for the annual livestreams and Titanic University videos which were quite good. Of course, it’s a lot easier for me to say that as I never donated to the project. Very understandable that people who donated hard earned money would have a much harsher view. I’m feeling less optimistic about this since I saw the livestream. The thing I’m massively disappointed about is there was no mention of Southampton in the features that were to be included. I will not be surprised if in one of their livestreams a question is asked about it and they say it has been cut. Ifyou think about it, Spammals (Dan) was working on the dock sheds as far as we know, and Tom was going to work on the rest of Southampton with helping hands from other members here and there. But them two were some of the main bringers to the table for Southampton, and with Spammals focussing on his KZread and Tom...I don’t think it’ll see the light of day. It’s great to hear a take (from a fellow Scot!) about the recent events going on. I’m just very disappointed in the overpromising and underdelivering factor so many have discussed in the comments here. They “promised” that the game was to come out this year, but there we go, the ship is only about 50% done, nothing about the story line, barely any historical characters modelled and so on. I get the struggle of making a video game (I honestly really do, I have tried and failed miserably on several occasions) but it just takes the mick a bit when they’ve had to rely on other people’s donations with maybe about a quarter of a game to show for it (after a development time of 10 years!) I’m also not keen on the new logo either, the last one looked much more classic, this one looks a tad tacky. I really want this project to be the one all of us dreamt about back when the first demo released in 2015. With Southampton, the entire ship, tour modes of Southampton, Titanic, Nomadic, Traffic etc. but every month going by it just seems less and less optimistic for me that these goals will be reached and I really hope I get proven wrong and the team turn this around and do their best work they can. The video was awesome though, a great insight into what’s been happening (I was a bit confused on the whole Tom business myself)

  • @Aaron1912RecordsAndResearch

@Caterpillarjon It was survivor Ruth Becker. She was invited to a convention and said the Titanic broke in half. Nobody believed her. They thought that only a funnel had fallen. The author of A Night to Remember Walter Lord contacted the survivors while researching for his book. The survivors wrote to him and told him the ship broke in half. He did not believe them. Their letters and his research notes are held in London. I went to London and researched them and it was clear that he believed that only a funnel had fallen. The success of his book basically cemented the idea that the Titanic sank intact and that only a funnel had fallen, and that was primarily the reason why many years later during that convention the Titanic enthusiasts still assumed the Titanic sank intact and that only a funnel had fallen. They may also have seen the bizarre Raise the Titanic film and reached the same conclusion that only a funnel had fallen. They never bothered to look into the matter or contact the survivors who saw the ship break because they simply could not imagine how the Titanic could break apart on her maiden voyage, so they simply avoided the subject altogether and argued with the survivors who saw it break in half. When the wreck was found there was a childish attempt to quickly work out how the ship broke. The twig break theory became popular because it was very simple for them to understand, despite being ridiculous and over dramatic. James Cameron's film was released which basically cemented the twig break idea. I mentioned back then how ridiculous it was and I said that Ruth Becker had used her fingers to show the Titanic breaking between the 2nd and 3rd funnel and still nobody believed her account. They were convinced that James Cameron was right to show the Titanic breaking between the 3rd and 4th funnel and they again insulted the memory of the late Ruth Becker who had used her fingers to show exactly where the ship broke - between the 2nd and 3rd funnel. I respected her and showed her version of the break in my study and I was insulted and mocked for believing her. Fast forward many years and they now accept she was right and the ship did break between the 2nd and 3rd funnel. The team at Honour and Glory keep changing their ideas of the break and the sinking on a regular basis. Common sense would be to research and read all of the survivor accounts at the beginning and then present a video, and not jump from one idea to the next each time they read half a dozen survivor accounts, and then jump onto a different idea when they read more and again more. I don't particularly follow their project, but maybe in 30 years they will eventually get around to researching all of the survivor accounts and presenting something more conclusive, assuming people still care in 2054. regards, The real Aaron1912

I've been watching the THG videos from time to time over the years, and from the beginning was a bit disappointed in their level of absolute certainty in their story of the Titanic. I've been following the story since 1968 and am far from an expert, but the team all of a sudden seemed to be portraying themselves as the leading authorities of the ship. Well, I guess someone has to be, so I let it go. But then, during one of the live streams of the sinking a year or two ago, Tom began to disparage 2nd Officer Lightoller. Over the years I've always admired this officer, and realized that the events that happened that night would be hard for anyone to deal with. And I always felt that he did the best he could to carry out his duties. And for someone like Tom, to criticize and disparage him, was to me, a smear on the character of Mr. Lightoller. After that I distanced myself from the project, so when I tuned in sometime last month and discovered Tom was gone, I knew I wouldn't miss him. I'm glad Flanagan has put this video up to clear out some of the details of the breakup of the THG team. I hope to hear more of his perspective soon. As far as Tom goes, if it would have been him rated as 2nd Officer that night on the Titanic, the iceberg would have probably sunk too!

That's probably the biggest mistake they made: making the focal point a 100% digital recreation of the ship and treating the story and characters like add-ons. If they'd done it the other way around, by focussing on building a fictional narrative with the _Titanic_ as the setting, they'd have a much higher chance of securing the needed investment. There'd be far more mainstream appeal for a game with an actual story and gameplay even if only 30% or so of the ship were accessible than for a game where you can just explore 100% of the ship and nothing else.

Any individual, group or organization wise enough to provide a Virtual Reality App, Game or Simulation of the Titanic. In accurate and high detail. Would surely profit from it beyond expectation. It would sell massively. I am personally, somewhat amazed and perplexed that no major investor or game company hasn’t taken notice. The interest is there. The number of people willing to purchase the product is there. The technology, blue prints, testimonies and knowledge of the Titanic is there. Where is the Titanic Virtual Reality experience? I do hope they make amends and turn the project around though, I don't care about the people, the crew, the water physics, the city, and to be honest not even the sinking in general. This was a pretty neat summary. Personally I feel like there were some things that could've been touched upon. Specifically like when you said Tom claimed they partnered with a large studio to make NPCs, it wasn't mentioned that those things were in fact happening, and they showed off some of the said NPCs. Just makes it come off as another wild exaggeration from Tom. They definitely made a lot of mistakes here, and I agree its likely a case of young guys letting it all get to their heads. And with how much attention they got I can't say I'd entirely blame them. They've gotten a lot of opportunities many people interested in Titanic could only dream of experiencing. After seeing the livestream, I'm cautiously optimistic. Them announcing a free Alpha set for this year that they will subsequently add onto is promising, and the more focused features seem far more realistic. It's kinda crazy how I've seen people talk so badly about them. At the end of the day it's a case of them biting off more than they can chew and not having the experience to know how to deal with the public. Though people talk about them as if they're the worst people alive

I’m glad you thought it was a good summary of ten years. And there’s a lot of things that could have been said/expanded upon/ etc etc but it was nearly a 40 minute video as it was - and the most important things were mentioned. They made a few digital renders of Captain Smith, Jack Phillips and Violet Jessop, but it did not come to fruition so why would I mention that as if it was a successful and completed aspect of the project? A few images of crew members is not 2200 NPC’s. And in their most recent livestream they acknowledge that it was a ridiculous notion to try and achieve that and have now completely scrapped it.

The 5518 Studios announcement seemed like a major breakthrough at the time, but retrospectively given that nothing seems to have come of it, my guess is that the company probably just agreed to make a couple of NPC models as a showcase to potential investors. A far cry from actually having a deal in place to build and code hundreds of NPC's. So it probably was mostly just Tom exaggerating again.

Nothing went wrong. A few game developers figured out that crowdfunding was the perfect way to keep dangling a carrot to naïve Titanic fans without ever having to produce an actual game. It's a scam. Development started 11 years ago. Titanic isn't a fictitious story nor one where anything changes over the years. They don't need to "script" anything. If there was an actual game in development, it would have been fairly simple to do, and even mid-1990s Titanic explorations like "Titanic: Adventure out of Time" are... they're already there? Animations, cut scenes, and a basic storyline of a 2+ hour historical event wouldn't take 11 years to produce if they'd ever planned to produce anything at all. But people are gullible. No game developer on earth would take 11 years to produce a Titanic game. You literally have the entire script already in front of you, the ship in the mid-90s games was actually pretty historically accurate itself in a single setting, and it's one of the single easiest things to animate or produce. Evidence: They've got real-time sinkings on here. lol This is the game that wrote itself. But they never intended to actually spend MONEY to produce a game. Why spend your money on that when they could buy cars with it? So let's talk about what went RIGHT: These guys absolutely took you for a ride. For trivia's sake: Titanic: Adventure Out of Time (1996 technology) took 1.5 years to produce. And it looked... comparable to the quality of Titanic Honor and Glory. You could walk around the entire ship, learn historical facts about it, and man, that smoking room with the fireplace looked beautiful. So that's about how long it would take to produce a Titanic game in 1996 with just a few coders. How long now? 11 years. And if we're honest, 21 years, and then 31 years, until they die with 10 mansions you bought them.

Thank you for this. I've been following Titanic HG for a very long time now and around the "radio silent" days, I'd often question what was going on, take a peek at their page, realize nothing changed, and my heart would just sink a little (no pun intended) Then I started to hear rumors about Tom this and Tom that; I didn't know what to believe and I had absolutely no proof of any of it being real, so, I did some sleuthing and unfortunately, came up empty-handed. It wasn't until about two weeks ago, I found out some information via screenshots posted on Reddit from somebody who actually worked with Tom. It was truly upsetting to see Tom act like such a big baby in these screenshots...but it still didn't answer my questions! Fast forward to today and your video just randomly pops up on my recommended (Thank you KZread algorithm?) and you basically answered all of my questions and even filled me in on some things I didn't already know! For that, I thank you. It's a shame this all happened. It would have been nice to have a fully-fledged story with NPCs and all of that but honestly? I just want to see the game release! I want to be able to walk on the titanic, explore it and feel like I'm in a virtual, interactive museum. The other stuff would have just been a bonus. I knew they were getting in way over their heads and it almost worried me the moment they announced adding a story/NPCs. I've seen so many game devs say "We wanna do this and do this and do that!" and then nothing comes of the game. I'd hate for that to happen to Titanic HG. Here's hoping they can get back on it and give us a masterpiece. Sometimes, less is more.
