Titanic and Survivors - Genuine 1912 Footage

For more original Titanic videos visit the Titanic Centenary Collection in the British Pathe free film archive: www.britishpathe.com/workspace...
Titanic - Genuine 1912 Footage. This newsreel (without the music)would have been shown in the cinemas at the time of the disaster. Footage includes the Titanic leaving Belfast Lough for Southampton on April 2nd, 1912. Captain Smith on the Bridge of the Titanic. The video also shows various ships such the Carparthia returning from rescuing survivors. Journalists interviewing survivors. Guglielmo Marconi, the inventor of long distance radio transmission and who was credited with saving those who were saved because of his marvelous invention.
Although it says this was shot on April 2nd, 2012, British Pathe think it was probably earlier. The ship still looks like work is being done to it with lots of workmen still around. The Titanic's name is in black as is other parts of the ship which ultimately ended up as white. There is also a workman's loo which can clearly be seen dangling off the left hand side of the ship - this surely would have been removed before setting sail.

Some people have mentioned these shots are of Titanic's sister ship, The Olympic. There has indeed been much confusion in the past over footage of The Olympic being used many times in reference to the Titanic. However, we must emphasise that this footage is genuine footage of the Titanic. If you look closely you can actually see her name 'Titanic' on the side of the ship albeit you need good eyesight!

The prom deck was changed very late, sometime in March 1912. In this footage the ship is being drydocked primarily for painting & for the lifeboats to be fitted. The B deck cabins had already been extended out to the sides of the ship some months earlier. This meant therefore that, unlike Olympic, there was no enclosed promenade deck (in the event of bad weather) - so they decided to partially enclose Titanic's A-deck promenade. Ignore the switch theory - it's been disproved!

Very cool! We can learn a lot from the footage. What breaks my heart is seeing the family members hanging around outside the White Star office or headquarters, waiting to know if their loved ones survived. No cell phones, Google satellite maps, text messages, social media like Twitter, and not a PA system or even a bullhorn. Just wait for info, hope, and pray for your loved ones. Probably for several days. To me, this isn't something we can quite process mostly now in modern life. Then you see the footage of what it was like to be absolutely sick about anyone on the ship and if they survived. Here's real people and this is the black and white footage. Just saddening. I don't know why I just so feel so sad when people suffer. 100 years ago or last week. Just me. Anywho, thanks for posting this. :)

'A' deck was partially enclosed in March, 1912. There are photographs showing the scaffolding being erected in early March.

From Southhampton yes! Don't forget, Titanic didn't sink on it's first voyage in the sea. It had to travel from Belfast, down the Irish Sea towards the English Channel and dock in Southampton. Then when it departed Southampton, it stopped twice before sinking: once in France then Ireland before crossing the Atlantic.

No, the footage at the start IS the Titanic being dry-docked on 3rd Feb 1912 (the only footage ever filmed, and held by the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum). The deck enclosure was not done until March 1912, so she still looks like the Olympic at this point. However, the B-deck windows and the name on the bow (!) confirm that this is the Titanic.

  • @russellkurt80

Both Titanic and Olympic were intended to have an open promenade. Both ships had already been launched before the Olympic’s maiden voyage. Experience of Olympic sailing made them decide to add an enclosed promenade to Titanic to prevent spray from the water coming onto the promenade. So Titanic was almost finished before this alteration took place. So the clip is of the Titanic, but before the change was made.

It's crazy to think that almost as many people as were lost on 9/11 were lost on the titanic. My dad is kinda obsessed about the thing, and he says that he would have loved to been on the ship...but the horrors that the dead went through and the survivors lived through is just TOO much to justify such an idea.

The Ship at the beginning is the Titanic, they did not enclose the A deck promenade until a late February or Early March 1912 and that video was filmed sometime in 1911. You need to look at the B Deck windows of the Olympic, which do not match up with the ship you see in the video. Also, the bridge wing cabs on the Olympic were flush with the bulwarks underneath. The bridge wing cabs you see in the video extend out over the bulwarks.

  • @metalslinger
    @metalslinger12 жыл бұрын

Not to mention, if you look at the B Deck windows, you will see that they are consistent with the Titanic and not the Olympic. The Titanic did not have a B Deck Promenade like the Olympic did originally. The cabins extended to the outer bulkhead. However, the confusion comes from the fact that in other videos, the producers use images of the Olympic leaving New York City and not the Titanic leaving Southampton.

In the inside they only changed one or two things as well. Olympic and Titanic were rather the same, but because Titanic had more extra fittings she was heavier. Also, it was not originally planned to enclose the First Class Promenade. That was done only after Olympic had been in service for some time. Titanic is unfinished at this point. If you think that is how the White Star Line would present their flagship to their first class passengers you are crazy.

I apologize for my previous comment. After some research, including on British Pathe website, I realized what in fact happened. After launching, Titanic went to Harland and Wolff's fitting quay. Her outfit was like her tween sister, the Olympic. Yet, under a final request of Bruce Ismay, some changes where made, including the coverage of deck A. This is in fact a real Titanic footage. Only the legend is wrong: Titanic is not leaving Belfast, she's stationary, although with her machines working.

Living in Belfast I walk past Titanic shit everyday, it's still cool to see it like this though.

The key word being 'sometimes'. When moneys involved, (And the conspiracy you're on about involves a lot of money), sometimes, conspiracys hit it right on the head.

It's too bad and somewhat Ironic that Titanic wasn't very well documented in newsreels.

She might look like Olympic but in reality it's the middle child who sank in 1912

Nice footage, but, like a lot of old films, it has for some unknown reason been converted to video at far too high a frame rate. The result is that people in the footage move like Benny Hill. It's distracting, and annoying. Really, how hard would it be to play these at the proper speed?
