Titanic and Survivors - Genuine 1912 Footage

Titanic - Genuine 1912 Footage. This newsreel (without the music)would have been shown in the cinemas at the time of the disaster. Footage includes the Titanic leaving Belfast Lough for Southampton on April 2nd, 1912. Captain Smith on the Bridge of the Titanic. The video also shows various ships such the Carparthia returning from rescuing survivors. Journalists interviewing survivors. Guglielmo Marconi, the inventor of long distance radio transmission and who was credited with saving those who were saved because of his marvelous invention.
Although it says this was shot on April 2nd, 2012, British Pathe think it was probably earlier. The ship still looks like work is being done to it with lots of workmen still around. The Titanic's name is in black as is other parts of the ship which ultimately ended up as white. There is also a workman's loo which can clearly be seen dangling off the left hand side of the ship - this surely would have been removed before setting sail.

Got to love that moment when in the olden days, when people saw a video camera they didn't know what to do, so they just stood there awkwardly.

Some people have mentioned these shots are of Titanic's sister ship, The Olympic. There has indeed been much confusion in the past over footage of The Olympic being used many times in reference to the Titanic. However, we must emphasise that this footage is genuine footage of the Titanic. If you look closely you can actually see her name 'Titanic' on the side of the ship albeit you need good eyesight!

To think this was almost 100 years ago - it feels so long ago yet still very recent. It's very humbling to acknowledge these kinds of disasters and remember those who died long before our time.
The prom deck was changed very late, sometime in March 1912. In this footage the ship is being drydocked primarily for painting & for the lifeboats to be fitted. The B deck cabins had already been extended out to the sides of the ship some months earlier. This meant therefore that, unlike Olympic, there was no enclosed promenade deck (in the event of bad weather) - so they decided to partially enclose Titanic's A-deck promenade. Ignore the switch theory - it's been disproved!
:( Makes me sad that more people didn't survive. At least some of the rules changed because of this tragedy.

Very cool! We can learn a lot from the footage. What breaks my heart is seeing the family members hanging around outside the White Star office or headquarters, waiting to know if their loved ones survived. No cell phones, Google satellite maps, text messages, social media like Twitter, and not a PA system or even a bullhorn. Just wait for info, hope, and pray for your loved ones. Probably for several days. To me, this isn't something we can quite process mostly now in modern life. Then you see the footage of what it was like to be absolutely sick about anyone on the ship and if they survived. Here's real people and this is the black and white footage. Just saddening. I don't know why I just so feel so sad when people suffer. 100 years ago or last week. Just me. Anywho, thanks for posting this. :)
Happy 107 years since your departure, Titanic. You will always be my favorite ship ❤️

Sorry, but the video allegedly showing Titanic leaving Belfast actually is nothing of the sort. It was taken in February, 1912, and shows an uncompleted Titanic in the process of moving berth. 'A' deck was partially enclosed in March, 1912. There are photographs showing the scaffolding being erected in early March.
I really love historical videos like this :) thanks for the uploads! The channel is great!
To any of those confused or are trying to use this as proof of titanic and Olympic switching: The A deck promenade was a last- minute change. By the time this was shot, they were just finishing up the preparations to enclose the forward A deck promenade. If you look closely, Titanic’s name is seen on the side of the hull.

thanks for the footage!! great
Your dedication at the end is excellent.
From Southhampton yes! Don't forget, Titanic didn't sink on it's first voyage in the sea. It had to travel from Belfast, down the Irish Sea towards the English Channel and dock in Southampton. Then when it departed Southampton, it stopped twice before sinking: once in France then Ireland before crossing the Atlantic.
Well that's embarrassing. I've been a Titanic fanatic for 11 years and i cant even tell the ships apart. God help me!! Ill have to brush up on my shit!!!
What's the name of the music? So lovely.
This was shot while still being fitted out. the funnels had not been painted and the top deck had not yet been partially enclosed. I beleive it to be the only bit of film ever taken of Titanic that still exists.

@@idfk1123 No, it is indeed Titanic as she entered the graving dock for final work (her promenade deck is not yet enclosed).
It's a piano opus by Chopin: Nocturne Op.9 No.2 used to play it when I was a kid, it's incredibly beautiful indeed.
No, the footage at the start IS the Titanic being dry-docked on 3rd Feb 1912 (the only footage ever filmed, and held by the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum). The deck enclosure was not done until March 1912, so she still looks like the Olympic at this point. However, the B-deck windows and the name on the bow (!) confirm that this is the Titanic.
Both Titanic and Olympic were intended to have an open promenade. Both ships had already been launched before the Olympic’s maiden voyage. Experience of Olympic sailing made them decide to add an enclosed promenade to Titanic to prevent spray from the water coming onto the promenade. So Titanic was almost finished before this alteration took place. So the clip is of the Titanic, but before the change was made.
This is the Olympic, you can tell by the open promenade deck!

Well said, sums up my thoughts exactly.
It's crazy to think that almost as many people as were lost on 9/11 were lost on the titanic. My dad is kinda obsessed about the thing, and he says that he would have loved to been on the ship...but the horrors that the dead went through and the survivors lived through is just TOO much to justify such an idea.

Almost twice as many people died in the 9/11 attacks. The death toll for 9/11 was a little short of 3000, and Titanic’s death toll was about 1500.

110 years ago, it sunk. RIP 💔
Still shocking and sad to see real footage of the ship and passengers and crew as it leaves it's dock. RIP.
Very Emotional
The B deck is consistent with the Titanic and not the Olympic. The Olympic never had that B deck window configuration. It also says Titanic on the side.
wowwwwwww , ty for sharing . I love the Titanic. I wonder if the ship would not have hit a iceberg, would it be in a museum today?
The Ship at the beginning is the Titanic, they did not enclose the A deck promenade until a late February or Early March 1912 and that video was filmed sometime in 1911. You need to look at the B Deck windows of the Olympic, which do not match up with the ship you see in the video. Also, the bridge wing cabs on the Olympic were flush with the bulwarks underneath. The bridge wing cabs you see in the video extend out over the bulwarks.
Not to mention, if you look at the B Deck windows, you will see that they are consistent with the Titanic and not the Olympic. The Titanic did not have a B Deck Promenade like the Olympic did originally. The cabins extended to the outer bulkhead. However, the confusion comes from the fact that in other videos, the producers use images of the Olympic leaving New York City and not the Titanic leaving Southampton.
I am thinking about you Titanic, may you rest in peace.
It's almost surreal to know that almost if not everyone in that video have long died.
Wow real footage from 100 years ago amazing while listening to the music watching the footage it looks kind of fake almost like watching a silent film of the early 1900's thanks for posting this
This is the same music as in the opening scenes of "Bad Santa" great movie!
its errie and amazing seeing things from 100 and 101+ years ago...
The Olmpic was almost identical to the Titanic in its fixtures who were both run by the Whit Star company.
Disaster struck for the Olympic on the 15th May 1933. Under the command of Captain John Binks , the Olympic smashed into the Nantucket Lightship totally destroying it.
Very moving. A true legendary tragedy. R.I.P to all who died.
La imagen que ponen del Titanic en el muelle, en realidad es el Olympic porque en la parte de arriba de la cubierta, se ve esa parte completamente abierta y el Titanic tenía cerrada hasta la mitad esa parte.

It's the Titanic. The Titanic did not have an enclose A promenade until late February of 1912. The video was shot in Jan of 1912. Also, if you look at the B deck windows, they are consistent with the Titanic. The Olympic had a promenade on B deck and the window arrangement was much different and easily recognizable. Also, the Olympic's bridge wing cabs were flush with the bulwark underneath. Here, the wing cabs extend over the bulwark.
I thought the same ting - they sure seem happy for people that just survived a awful experience.
At 1:05 the reel say Quartermaster Hichens (sic) went down with the ship and was picked up later. However all accounts say he was put in charge of a lifeboat. The one nearly commandeered by Molly Brown allegedly because Hitchens refused to row back to the ship. Fascinating. (many people at the time say it was his error that resulted in the collision) www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-17551053
@Frankowillo
5 жыл бұрын
How the hell could a Quartermaster be responsible for the collision?
@Britishpathe, do you have any footage of the OLYMPIC and BRITANNIC launches?
Infact they only changed one or two things. The outside of the ship was a little changed for they blocked half of the promenade deck up so they could add extra rooms. In the inside they only changed one or two things as well. Olympic and Titanic were rather the same, but because Titanic had more extra fittings she was heavier. Making Titanic the Largest ship in the world.
RIP Titanic and the passengers. :(

anyone know what's the music in the background? It's beautiful :)
Nope. This is the Titanic filmed a month before the A deck was enclosed (March 1912). Note how various other parts of the ship haven't yet been finished, ie. the funnels are still unpainted & no lifeboats installed yet.
beautiful and sad unhappy.
MUSE did a slight cover of that in one of their songs. :)
I'm gonna' need to get you to write that one down.
Lot's of people saying it isn't titanic, that's true, but it's kinda hard to find other footage of Titanic, as the Whitestarline used many pictures of the Olympic as Titanic. That's why people always use Olympic pictures as Titanic pictures.

What the hell do these comments have to do with the footage? Great video. Thanks for posting.
want to cry when I see those faces of them. I wish they didn't die like that.
It actually is the Titanic whose name can clearly be seen 0:22 with full screen and full 720p. The Titanic had the enclosed first class promenade but this video is shot before she left Belfast. Also, it was not originally planned to enclose the First Class Promenade. That was done only after Olympic had been in service for some time. Titanic is unfinished at this point. If you think that is how the White Star Line would present their flagship to their first class passengers you are crazy.
Yep. You can tell when you see the side of the ship as the A deck promenade is not enclosed (it was open on the Olympic).
@Fictionaloceanliners4162
3 ай бұрын
That’s because the promenade being in closed was a last minute change
Also to add, the name plate in the video does say TITANIC. :P
I apologize for my previous comment. After some research, including on British Pathe website, I realized what in fact happened. After launching, Titanic went to Harland and Wolff's fitting quay. Her outfit was like her tween sister, the Olympic. Yet, under a final request of Bruce Ismay, some changes where made, including the coverage of deck A. This is in fact a real Titanic footage. Only the legend is wrong: Titanic is not leaving Belfast, she's stationary, although with her machines working.
Living in Belfast I walk past Titanic shit everyday, it's still cool to see it like this though.
The Carpathia Captain is looking at the camera like a boss at 0:52
The key word being 'sometimes'. When moneys involved, (And the conspiracy you're on about involves a lot of money), sometimes, conspiracys hit it right on the head.
I'm sad because of nostalgia 😞
It's too bad and somewhat Ironic that Titanic wasn't very well documented in newsreels.
At 1:19 are you sure it's crew members titanic and not carpathia?
Where did you get this?
Wow I just played this song by learnt by ear in a piano recital
She might look like Olympic but in reality it's the middle child who sank in 1912
Nice footage, but, like a lot of old films, it has for some unknown reason been converted to video at far too high a frame rate. The result is that people in the footage move like Benny Hill. It's distracting, and annoying. Really, how hard would it be to play these at the proper speed?
