Tissot PRX Powermatic 80: The Best Everyday Swiss Watch Under $700?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today we get up close and personal with a new release from Tissot-the eagerly anticipated automatic version of the PRX.
Join me for an exciting unboxing + mini review of this hot new watch (ref. T137.407.11.051.00), where I'll share my initial impressions and thoughts on the historical significance of the Powermatic 80 movement and the brand.
But is it just a homage of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak? Does it live up to the hype of its quartz-only predecessor? With its modest $650 price tag, is it worth it? And of course, will this latest purchase remain a part of my collection? Watch and find out!

A Genta-esque look, the class of the 70's Omega's but without the reliability issues. Affordable price. You certainly can't go wrong with that one, seems like a great daily!

Saw this watch on a client’s wrist. We chatted…he loves the watch. I bought one. This is an absolutely beautiful watch. Look like a very expensive time piece with its angles, great finish and eye catching retro yet contemporary design. If you’re into 1970s Mid-Century Modern and how well that period serves today’s world…than this watch is a perfect bullseye. I have 22 watches…from Rolex down to Timex. This Tissot is going to get a lot of wrist time. Can’t recommend it enough…money very well spent.

I have a Tissot automatic chronograph and it needed servicing. Having been still under warranty, I was lucky to live just an half hour drive from Tissot's service center. The customer service was impeccable. Even thought they did not really find anything wrong they still brought back up to there manufacturer's brand new standard, so it like like getting it new again. I have no fear in getting a Tissot knowing they have fantastic customer service and an excellent service and repair department.

@@benjaminbarrera214 Peculiar, as most all of Tissots movements have a good amount of silicon parts. Anti-magnetism is kinda their thing. Silicium mainsprings, silicium escapements on some, etc. Perhaps that's why it "wasn't broken" but still "needed servicing"?

Congratulations Jack, and welcome aboard this confounded hobby! I invite you to take a look at the Seiko sarx055. It is made from titanium, has an attractive bracelet, sapphire crystal, has a good movement and is a great size( not too big). Ticks a lot of boxes, and not expensive. No I don't work for seiko, I'm just a regular seikopath. Wear your Tissot in good health my friend.

I think the entry level Swiss brands like Tissot are absolutely killing it lately. Perhaps they're vying for the void left as Seiko moves upmarket with their thousand-dollar Prospex's now. This one would be a home run if it were just a bit smaller, and for that I prefer the Tissot Gentleman. That one is very Aqua Terra-esque without the hefty price tag.

I believe the exact opposite.Tissot and Hamilton as part of the swatch group are taking a very worrisome path. The powermatic 80 is impressive with it's accuracy and power reserve at this price point but not everything is great. The movement is very tough to work with even for very experienced watchmakers. The supply of parts from ETA is being reduced constantly. If your watch has a problem then you have to send it to an official partner of the company.Or even to Switzerland. That would cost way more than a local watchmaker you trust and would deprive you of the watch for quite some time. Not to mention its heard they just replace your movement with someone else's repaired movement.I am sorry but my watch is most of all the movement not the case or the strap.Last but not least automatic watches are objects to last for generations.I have a Universal Geneve watch from the 60s from my grandfather. The company is closed but my local watchmaker that i trust has my watch running no problemo. Can you predict the same for a laser regulated weirdly modified ETA movement with non easily available Nylon parts if Tissot or Hamilton for example shut down?it may not seem likely but 50 years is a long time.. Seiko may have some QC issues and half the power reserve or less accuracy but their classicly built movements are proven workhorses like the simple ETA 2824-2 was. They work for decades even without service and every small town on earth will have a watchmaker that knows how to work with them. Personally i am really worried for the path Swatch has chosen for it's entry level brands..

I own the quartz PRX, black dial model. Have owned four Oysterquartz pieces over the years, so I'm obviously drawn to the Genta retro styling that makes up the genre. Very impressed with the styling, fit and finish of the quartz PRX. Lots of pros (many mentioned in the review), but likewise numerous cons. The price-point is of course the constraining factor that would fairly explain the cons. About The Urban Gentry reviewer (I apologize for not recalling your name): Always a genuine pleasure to listen to your views and opinions, so well-versed in the business, art and technology of watches. I bought a blue one a few days ago and wow this is a real stunning looking timepiece. I really like it very much. The built quality is very good for such a quite cheap watch, but what impresses me most is how slim it is, it fits perfect on my Wrist. And it combines perfect the Attributes of a Spotswatch and a Dresswatch in my option, you can combine it with a formal dress like a suit but also with Polo and Jeans wearing Sneakers to it. And it is also a nice Effect that it has a Waterresistence of 100 Meters/330 Feet although not having a screw down crown, you don’t have to be afraid to get in contact with Water. Really great buy imho.

I find it remarkably admirable that you took the time and resources to PURCHASE this piece in order to review it, with the understanding that it very likely may not pass muster to stay in your collection. I find your preview quite fair and honest. I totally agree with every bit of what you said. The presence on the wrist was an encumbrance do to the way it wore for me. I like the “bolt action” design of the bracelet but good luck finding a non Tissot star for it. I agree. Not for me, but I can see why so many like it. Thank you very much, as always. I understand for your preference the 36mm would be the perfect fit especially taking the era into consideration, I think the 40mm modern size will sell like hot cakes to the general public. Tissot’s majority of the lineup is larger sizes and honestly they are killing it. Their market share grew last year and they are one of the top ten brands now. That being said, I wish it was a tad bit smaller at 38 but I still enjoy wearing mine a lot. The finishing is incredible for the price point.

after viewing this video before purchasing the blue dial version, and viewing it 2x after, I have to say I agree with almost every single point TGV made for and against this piece’s attributes. Straight to it, my wrist is 7.25” (18.5cm) on a very slim frame and this watch wears exactly like a 41mm rolex datejust, which is perfect for me by contemporary standards, but anything under 7” will not wear very nicely. Only disagreement I have with the assessment in this video is the criticism of the display case-back adding unnecessary width….the thickness is just fine at a 10.9 trivial mm for god’s sake *edit* This was a great review video as consistently expected from this channel. Always a fan first, critic a distant second (no pun intended)

Agreed on the size. My first "Swiss Watch" was a 1978 Hamilton Military Field Watch complete with NSN markings on the back. It still keeps damn good time and I wear it a lot. But when traveling, it's the Casio Oceanus S100 for it's atomic sync and easy time zone setting. And it's the perfect size for your cultured manlet wrist. ;-)

As an apprentice watchmaker, I agree with your reservations about the movement. In my view, this balance system inhibits long-term accuracy and serviceability. Sadly, Tissot is not the only Swatch Group brand using this system. The vast majority of Hamilton's 80-hour movements have the same balance as well as a few Certina's. Regardless, fantastic review, TGV. Thank you so much for all you do. All the best to you and yours, -Branyon

    @Wall2157

    2 жыл бұрын

@@pedronogueira8148 I apologize for the late reply. The reason the Powermatic 80 inhibits long-term serviceability is due to the use of a plastic escape wheel and pallet fork. It seems Tissot is increasing the use of plastic parts in the balance and gear train, which leads to direct replacement instead of the standard clean, oil, and adjust. Also, the balance is near impossible to accurately regulate unless you have the laser system Tissot uses.

While Tissot may actually be the most popular Swiss watch brand (after Swatch?) in Central Europe, it's primarily the quartz models so I've never actually encountered a Powermatic powered model in the past. The regulation system honestly, how do I phrase it, doesn't spark joy in me. Btw. I don't think anyone can claim the concept of the smart watch, pretty sure fiction writers came up with that as soon as wristwatches became popular at some point between 1920 and 1950, maybe even earlier.

I agree with you on the size: I would also like to see a 36mm instead of the 40mm. Also, it's a pitty that they used the 80.111 (ETA C07.111) movement instead of their 80.811 (ETA C07.811) movement that is used in the Tissot Gentleman: this one has a silicon hairspring and jewels on the pallet fork. On the other hand, I do NOT agree with you on the fact that the watch would be difficult to regulate. It does not have a common regulator, but the watch can be regulated by the weights on the balance wheel. I never hear that complaint for other high end watches that use a free sprung hair spring (like many of the high end watches). Anyway, if your watchmaker does not know what to do with the watch: a complete revision (and repair) of the watch with an official Tissot service center will cost € 150 (somewhat more in Dollars). That is by no means the end of the world and certainly an order of magnitude less than what you would pay for an high end watch.

Its nice - I still prefer the Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicium. I think the look of the Gentlemen is more classic everyday. Also the extra silicon balance spring improves accuracy and is a nice value add. As for the size, I have larger wrists and 40-42mm is my sweet spot.
