I love snails, particularly bladder snails. Thanks for posting a positive video about them. I'm so tired of watching videos about how to get rid of them. They're fun and enjoyable to watch on their own.

Bladder Snails are God’s greatest gift. They actually, and I’m being completely serious, SAVED my LIFE. I was thinking of offing myself after I crashed my last micro-worm culture (a huge drag), but then I saw one of my little bladder buddies sucking on the shell of another bladder snail, who was sucking on the shell of another bladder snail, who was sucking on the shell of another bladder snail who was then feasting on a decomposing bladder snail. It was such a lovely sight that I was forced to put away the API ammonia solution I was going to drink. Life is just better with a bladder snail.

Hey Jerome! Buddy never off yourself. For real. There aren't many cool people on this planet, we need you to stick around! And yes these little snails are pretty awesome. Sounds like you saw a massive mating party ... and a little cannibalism. I've been in low places too and it can be rough but once I got into this hobby all those negative thoughts just fell away. When feeling low just check on your little buddies. Throw them some fresh food, check on their eggs, build another tank, and we're always around if you want to talk shop

"Bladder snails work with what you give them" Boy is that an understatement. I accidently acquired ONE bladder snail that hitched a ride on some plants I ordered for my frog tank. Knowing nothing about snails, I plopped him in a vase with water and a few floating plants and figured I'd just keep him until he passed and then move on. Four months and 100+ bladder snails later, I'm finally accepting my fate and getting them their own real set up. I gave them the BARE MINIMUM. I haven't fed them, changed their water, expanded their living space, NOTHING. Yet they continue to thrive.

Hey Doodledust! Yes that sounds about right! Bladder Snails are incredibly tough and fully capable of feeding themselves in a few ways. They're also able to self fertilize. Which isn't as useful as self cloning (parthenogenesis) but still a strong trait for colonization of new worlds like your vase. While cruising around their container they are continuously scraping the walls. Searching for edible algae but also feeding on the biofilm. Forcing the bacteria to replenish themselves like a renewable food source. As for building them a true setup it sounds like you already have 😁 my only suggestion would be to avoid mechanical filters if possible. They tend to explore and get caught up on the impellers

I adore bladder snails, they’re my favorite snail and gastropod in general, I just bought a small tank to start breeding them again and I love this video! I use to have an ecosphere where they thrived and I hope I can give my new snails a great life as well

A very great breeding tip, strawberries will make them replicate within hrs. Strawberries 🍓 🍓 🍓. Over feed if you want to breed. Eggs in 12 hrs

@@Rick-the-Swift I have a diffrent set up than OP. I just got some pond water in a 10 gal next to a south window. It's not necessarily low O2 bc the amount of algae and horn root totally produces o2, even in the cold canadian winter. No filter, no gravel. Just Vivo I'd love to hear more about your endeavours. Love these lil guys.

Thank you so much for showing information about bladder snails that I have not found anywhere else. I have recently become interested in live aquarium plants and my first order of plants has had several bladder snails hatch out of them. I kind of like the way they look and find them more entertaining than you would imagine snails to be. And since you asked, yes I am interested in your perspective about the plants as well as the animals and way of setting up and maintaining these projects.

Thank you so much for all the information about bladder snails and the list of supplies. We've only had our snails a short time. They arrived on some water lettuce we were trying to winter over. What a great surprise. We just ordered the filter you had listed. We have our tank set up at work and people just love watching the snails. They are very interesting and have some funny antics.

Bladder snails are crazy i successfully breed them in 20ml water but that's makes them special. I found tip for breeding any aquarium snail type here is recipe: Put many adult snails in a tank, feed them properly, they will start to lay a lot of eggs, when first eggs start hatching remove all these big snails to another tank amd almost all baby snails will survive and grow up

Good advice! Following that pattern will also disrupt the life cycles of any parasites the adults may carry. Preventing their ability to transfer into the next generation. It's a nice way to start new tanks too. Returning the adults to their home tank after the plant the seeds so to speak. Thank you great comment

That's true! They're like tiny water rabbits 😂 but there are ways to push that breeding behavior even further. Exposing them to crayfish chemicals for instance, will cause a massive population surge

@@BucketPonds I have an infestation lol. I decided to just use them as feeders for some other animals since they breed so quickly. I ended up with ramshorn and bladder snails likely from the duckweed in my aquarium.

@@BucketPonds Ok, now I have to know what you are talking about. Crayfish chemicals? Do you just mean adding a crayfish or two to the snail tank? Or a crayfish exoskeleton after it molts? This is is just too darn interesting

I have been trying to mass reproduce bladder and some type of trumpet snail, for one month, and I have had lots of luck! (They grow very fast when you feed em fish food and algae: more so than only lettuce(not boiled)

Try giving them dried duckweed powder and filamentous algae.

Great video. I'm trying to breed a few bladder snails for my leech I found in a pond and is now in my ecosphere type aquarium. I'm not sure of it eats snails but I heard they do, and I've noticed a few dead snail shells around the aquarium.

I got these in my aquarium. only have shrimps so far so Im hoping they starve to death but if they start eating my live plants, im turning the aquarium into a pea puffer tank. Cool snails as long as they dont multiply too much and eat live plants!

Hey don't worry too much! Bladder snails don't like live plants. Either they are harder to eat or digest, or the snails have evolved to avoid eating all the live vegetation in their ecosystems. Your main concern should be planaria. Which will feed on snail eggs and baby shrimp. The snails themselves are harmless but planaria are hard to control once established alongside a big bladdersnail population

I accidentally ended up with a bladder snail in my tank and it is my favorite snail! I think it just layed some eggs, so I'm curious to see what bladder snails look like when they first hatch.

Tiny baby bladder snail hitched a ride on some new plants a couple months ago. Didn't want more bladder snails, so I separated him into a filtered jar so he could live happily away from my main tank. Now he's an adult and just keeps laying eggs, and he's literally in a jar hahaha. No tips or tricks needed! I don't need more of them, so I've been having to remove and destroy the eggs every day or two, but if I wanted another colony pet he would be able to start it all on his own hahaha

Yes! When isolated they will self fertilize after a short time. Generally they are incredibly easy to raise and very forgiving as pets. Though they would breed much faster when given access to an unrelated mate. Destroying eggs!? 🥺 Poor babies! I would gladly take them lol. But I understand why.

How to make sure they have nice shells? I've seen really nice ones that go bad eventually, idk if its a calcium problem or what. What's the best pH for them? I can't find anything other than "anything is fine" to keep them alive, but nothing on maintaining shell health. Also, mine don't like cucumber somehow!!! Even blanched.

Hey Fawneh! That's interesting! You may have a slightly different species. There's actually a ton of different types of bladder snails out there. I've been dreaming of a way to cultivate some cave Physa for example. Or the rocky mountain Physa. Some are endangered like the snake river Physa. Which I believe we should bring into the aquarium hobby and preserve for the future. Sorry for the long post! As to shell health I would focus on adding calcium sources and avoid acidic water conditions. You're probably seeing white or especially thin sections on their shells? Try adding a few marble chunks or a bit of an eggshell and see if they take interest

Do you have any tips on removing them? I have a ton in my koi pond but I want to separate them into a tank because I feel terrible just killing them like so many other people are suggesting

Try some bait. They will gather on a food item like a cucumber slice. Then it's easy to scoop out a bunch in one go. They will repopulate the pond but you can do that every so often to cut their numbers down

Hey it's our buddy from www.phillipsfishworks.com! The Florida Mudmidget is an interesting little plant. I originally thought it was small bits of Spanish moss 😅 but it's a type of duckweed. It's not as vigorous as lemna minor and it acts as less of a barrier to gas exchange at the surface of the aquariums. No roots either. Just a little knot like growth of small spikes. You may see the spikerush in here as well and that is a decent plant for fish fry. In a way it resembles the mudmidget though it's much larger. Again looking like a knot of green strings or spikes. That one was very hard to identify at first! We had to rely on old botanical drawings. Typically it grows as a terrestrial sedge type of plant.

I know you probably don't monitor this, but I have a start of a color morph like you mentioned. They are brown with white stripes/white with brown stripes. Have you ever heard of someone paying for bladder snails? Or specific colors?

Hey firedragon! I'm here! Yes actually, we have purchased several batches of bladder snails to contribute to our breeding program. They do sell. Both as pets and some keepers purchase them as food for various other pets. That may be a color morph! Or hinting at some underlying genetics. Much like neocaridina which have been bred to be very colorful. I would isolate the striped Physa and encourage them to breed with one another. Repeat this with their offspring that display the stripes. After a few generations of "inbreeding" which can reinforce the stripes, you may very well have a new type! And I would be your first customer!

The brush? The Macroalgae? That's a type of stonewort and it grows all around the world. Our original samples were taken from a very old pond out in the woods

What are those small white things floating in the tank at 4:38? Are those new born snails? I have similar looking critters in my tank but I dont know if those are new born bladder snails or something entirely different. Please help

Yes those are most likely baby bladder snails. They are clear or white when they're so small. Generally the babies are hard to see and their shells are almost transparent. A macrolense can help with viewing the very small animals in your tanks. Even a cheap one that clips onto a phone can do wonders. You will be able to see their little eyes as they cruise around

Well planted enough to keep the water from growing anaerobic bacteria and avoid ammonia spikes, then that would probably be fine. My little guy is in a jar, and after one filter stopped working and I was waiting for another, he escaped the jar because he just couldn't handle it. They can survive for 12-24 hours without water, so he was fine, but it was definitely a telling testament to how quickly the water quality went bad. They do have their limits.

Do bladder snails only lay eggs above the water line? Or both above and below?

Hey Blake, bladder snails will lay eggs pretty much anywhere! Ours prefer to lay their eggs above the surface as they are exposed to a number of predators. Our Guppies, Gambusia and Planaria are egg-eaters. Otherwise they will lay eggs on the glass and on anything below the water line. They can be good about hiding them too. Laying clutches within the Macroalgae for example.

What fish do you keep with them?

We've kept skirted tetras, endler/guppy hybrids, and gambusia mosquito fish with the snails. Though the mosquito fish will hunt them and consume the eggs.

Nope no filter required. I like to use sponge filters in my larger tanks to help out with the water quality but we have tons of jar tanks with no filtration (just some plants and/or macroalgae)

They seem to do so when kept with certain fish. My guppies and gambusia will eat the eggs underwater. Idk if the snails can sense this behavior but it's my only explanation so far

The best way to get a nice population of bladder snails: try your fucking damndest (yes it’s a word) to not get an infestation, and fail.

That's true! They are incredibly durable and adaptable to aquarium conditions. You can try to fish out the adults but they will just breed more often to compensate for the loses. They have a number of built-in strategies to deal with predators and that's one of them. Your best bet is to limit food sources but there will always be a few. Even a single snail can reproduce on its own when given no other choice.

If you have hard water you definitely need to change your water

Trying to cultivate bladder snails and plants for goldfish food. I have lots of snail egg sacs but few make it to juvenile or even adulthood. Might have maybe 20 adults snails in a 20gal. and almost never see small juvenile snails. I am not aware of any predator in my tank. I have very hard water (gh: 22dgh). Calcium levels are ok (120 mg/l) and water parameters are good. pH is a little high at 8.2. Plants seem to struggle. I have duck weed in the tank and it grows slowly as well as jungle val which is in a constant cycle of melting and Recovery. I am not sure if the issue is a mineral deficiency or some kinda tiny predator like planeria. Any suggest as to how to sort out the issue?

Same here. Everyone says these things are a breeze to breed. Mine just keep dying off and eggs just disappear. There is a serial snail killer on the loose :(

long story short get 1 snail and you will had 20 by the end of the week. Bladder snails were hitch hikers in my tank and a week just 1 week i had over 20 snails i hate seeing them but that being said they will help get algae off the plants and some off glass.

youre not a breeder, being a breeder requires effort :3

Haha! That's true sometimes. But I've also investigated and attempted to replicate pretty heavily methods in which we can influence the bladder snail's behavior. Turns out they are interesting little critters. With more than meets the eye. Especially when we focus on their responses to predators. I've even read some reports/papers that seem to say that smashing a bladder snail will cause others in their habitat to breed much more quickly. Might explain some of the aquarium people who smush their snails and get all confused when more and more appear afterwards

Seriously? Tips and tricks? Just overfeed your fish and these snails will do the rest. Now they are more than my fishes lol.

Put a pleco in with them. Mine has eaten almost all my bladder snails. I was trying to make them for my pea puffs. Pea, Puff, Spot Jr , and Steve the pea puffers aren't happy with Gina the pleco. She ate all of them! Then my pregnant Guppy ate the eggs.
