Started 2019 as a first time runner with a 5KM time of 40min. Ending it with a 5KM personal best of 26:33. Happy with my progress, and as you said, not rushing it at all, trusting the process. Looking forward to breaking my own personal records in 2020, and hopefully get my short term goal of a 2:10 half marathon. Thank you for all the tips.

I forgot to say in my comment last week: My biggest injury prevention move was to get my running form checked and corrected. All through my life my knees gave me huge pain when running, to the point where I couldn't even climb stairs. My whole life was "run for two months, get injured" and repeat. About two years ago found a really good running gait analysis guy in London, he changed how I ran and I now run 60km+ per week at a reasonable pace without any issues.

Great content as always, Ben. Only took up running at the end of February, and have been consistent with my training since. I ran 1.41:31 half in August (not a race) and 45:30 10k in a race in September. 2020 goals are to run sub 1.35 half and sub 42 10k.

Great tips, Ben! It’s funny because a lot of the tips to stay injury free are common sense and easy to do, but if they’re easy to do, they’re also easy not to do! I’m a brit living in Florida so I don’t struggle with winter running too much. 🙄 I enjoyed seeing you running around Reigate Hill, as my childhood was spent getting muddy on the mountain bike there! 👊🏼

I am constantly getting injury every few months. It is what killed my college career. Earlier this week I got a stress fracture from running with shin pain for 2 days. I was feeling great but not listening to my body and it hit me quickly. Hopefully I can get things going again, focusing on the points you mentioned in the video and can complete my first marathon before my birthday in September. Thanks for sharing. Love the videos!

Some fantastic advice in this video Ben. For me it's all about balance: you have to push yourself to improve, but you also have to not be in a rush - trying to find shortcuts to success just increases the risk of failure and injury. As a newish older runner I've loved the sensible advice you provide in such an enthusiastic manner. 2020 goals are to get closer to 1:45 for a half marathon, and keep on having fun! Hope you and Sarah have a great Christmas!

On the topic of weight loss, I’d encourage people who are running for weight loss to reframe their goals and remember to take it slow. I started running as a challenge to myself last November and have regained the passion for it and have lost 22-23 lbs in that time, but it has actually become hard for me to stop losing weight at this point with increased training etc. I say this not to boast but to remind people to focus on health over a number on the scale. I am now back to lifting weights and eating more food (even when I don’t feel like I can stomach any more) to slow down the rate of weight loss and maintain health and resilience.

Great video and looks like an amazing place to run. My goals for 2020 are to finish the Arc of Attrition 100 ( I haven't done enough training as motivation is as rubbish as the weather!), sub 10 hr at SDW50, sub 24 hr at SDW100, Gran Trail Courmayeur (100km 7900m+) in July and hopefully to get a place in the Tor des Geants (330km 31,000m+) in Sept, or Tot Dret (130km 12,000m+) if I'm not successful in the ballot. So a very packed year with a fair few races in between those. After tearing my soleus muscle two weeks after SDW100 this year, I'm very much hoping to have an injury free year in 2020!

Great video Ben - I can vouch for many of these 👍🏻. The blood test report looks fantastic - I’ve never had one. What should I search for and how much does it cost? Seeing as you asked; my tip, if anyone’s interested, is to find the optimum mileage and frequency of running that works for you. My injuries and niggles came and went when I started running, but pretty much vanished once I got up to running 5-6 times a week and over 50-60km per week (built up 10% at a time, as recommended, with easy day’s between hard days). I have a history of injury (before my running form was corrected), and I was scared of running this often in case I got injured, but it’s amazing!

Ben thanks for such a great channel, very inspirational. Doing the Mozart Ultra next June, 50 miles 12,000 feet climbing, I’ve never used poles, can I do this without them? Or should I invest the time in trying some out? From videos of the route it looks quite runnable and less technical than a lot of mountain ultras so without poles may be an option.

Excellent video Ben, on my 15k run today it was raining the whole way, it’s a bit tricky knowing what shoes to wear on the trails in wet muddy conditions, don’t want to wear my newer good trail shoes, so I wear some of my older well used trail shoes & plus just slow the pace down, less chance of injury in terrible wet conditions & old shoes, that’s one of my ways to prevent injuries, thanks Ben 👍🏼

What is your advice on mileage at a younger age? I’m 16 next week and am wondering when it is safe to increase mileage? I also play hockey so that is other exercise?

  • @BenParkes

Hey Colin! Teens all develop at such a different rate, so it’s almost impossible to give advice about such as thing like that. Need to speak to some people who know you and your background much better than I do. Hockey is good exercise for sure, so you’d want to factor that into any running training plan you do.. stay safe on the hockey field, I’ve been hit a few times over the years and that hurts!!

Hey Ben. How did you start running again after being out due to plantar fasciitis? Any specific prevention you did/are doing because of that injury? Read your response to a comment on your Strava where you said it bothered you for some time as well. Have been out for about 6 months because of it myself. Love your videos btw! Thanks for uploading. Cheers.

Something I found that helped was using a hard massage ball (Google Lacrosse Massage ball) and roll it back and forth on the arch and heel of the foot...Don't do it when the pain is at it's greatest; normally first thing in the morning, but throughout the day when the pain lessens...It takes time but eventually the pain subsides... And then, as with any injury, start back training gradually...Try some walk/jogs and easy jogs until it becomes more comfortable... Hope that helps

As rich has said.. rolling the underside of the foot. Some people like using a frozen bottle of water.. or you can buy specific rollers on amazon. Just look up plantar fasciitis and they all come up! Rolling it a few times a day got me back running pretty quickly. If that fails, go to your physio and ask about shockwave therapy. That would be the next step. All the best

Ben Parkes yep, have tried shockwave as well. What finally seems to be working is a treatment called ‘Epte’ - basically acupuncture loaded with an electric current straight into the tendon. Thanks for answering (you too Rich :-) Will definitely keep massage rolling to work back up to marathon distance

Haha.. Great video and crazy timing!.. I just posted on my Instagram account (shameless plug instagram.com/wayeoflife ) how I managed to do 4000km this year at the age of 52. So many are the same.. easy runs (I plog which helps force a slow pace and make world cleaner), diet (turning vegan this year really helps recovery.. for ME like you say everyone is different), foam rolling in front of TV and.. weight loss (very difficult subject but I had decades of fat wrapped around my body. Being healthier through getting rid of it made a world of difference in health as well as running gait) and shoe technology.. those clunky shoes of years ago are gone and now many don't beat you up so much.

Great tips, only one I slightly disagreed with is weight. Not to encourage people to lose unhealthy amounts of weight but if you're 60kg rather than 70kg you will 100% be able to run a marathon faster (given same person/training etc). Kichophe 57kg, Mo farah 58kg, Bekele 56kg, yes these guys are small like 5'6 but they would not be breaking records and winning races at 65kg for their height. The end of the day running is just lots of small jumps forward, as long as you're at a healthy weight then less weight is better for long distance running.
