Im 16, ive been working really hard to get my first electric and amp, thanks for the video, it helps a lot when im new to this stuff. Plus, you have really good ways, and entertaining ways of explaining things. Keep being awesome!

Another great video Marty! I appreciate how you explain what kind of different sounds you get from the different placements of the mic. The combination of the dynamic and condenser mics is perfect.

Most nowadays DAW has an option to invert the "phase" from one of the 2 microphones you're using to record guitars. It allows to correct and invert the frequencies cancellation due to a certain proximity effect.... Basically, if you listen to 2 takes of a same guitar recording session and it sounds lifeless and/or odd, then hit that option button in your DAW and it should fix the issue. It usually looks like a circle with a slash in it..

I use a $25 ABY pedal that splits my signal at the end of my FX loop; one goes back into the FX return of my amp (which then goes to my 1x12 cab so that I can hear it), and the other goes to a Tech21 SansAmp pedal (which emulates a mic'd speaker), which goes direct in to my audio interface (Scarlett Focusrite) so that I can record it with Reaper. Super-affordable and sounds great, and you don't have to buy a mic or fiddle with its placement -- and you can use that direct-out pedal (the SansAmp, or some other brand/model if you prefer like the Mooer Radar) to go direct at a gig where you might need a quiet stage, but you still want control over what your direct-in tone sounds like.

I have this weird guitar recording technique that involves plugging a dual mono splitter into the guitar (or the out line of the effects pedal if at least one is being recorded to tape), and there are two lines that meet back up in the computer interface to form a stereo pair. One line from the splitter is being fed to the guitar amplifier, which is then picked up by the microphone; that sound the microphone picks up in front of the amp is what gets sent to one side of the stereo pair in the mixing console. And then the other line from the splitter bypasses the amplifier completely and gets fed directly into the board, without even so much as a direct injection preamplifier (especially if other effects are being recorded to tape), it's a copy of the raw-ish signal before it gets to the amp. The whole method was created in an attempt to mimic the early recording techniques of Pink Floyd's original bandleader, Syd Barrett.

I use the Jerry Cantrell set up fot mikes. One in the front and one in the back of the cab. Midrange and lows sound awesome

Do you mean in open back speaker cabs?

I get the best sound in the studio by placing my amp 5 - 6 feet from a wall (facing the wall) and placing the mic between the two. Gives it a wonderful, natural room reverb. Not the sound for everyone but I play that vintage Rhythm & Blues style.

...I've been needing this video for 2 years.....there are plenty of KZreadrs singing and playing cover songs...but NONE want to tell you how they are recording it....!!!!

I like to crank my amp, and also I enjoy more of a room sound, so I put a condenser at 45 degrees from the center of the speaker and move it away 3-4 ft. This only works with high volume, otherwise the sound will be too dark, not usable for live performance, but works for recording, the downside is that it depends a lot on the room tone, since it will depend on natural reverberation to give you that live concert effect. If you have too much absorption probably you are better with a SM57 at 45 degrees looking at the center of the speaker, right at the edge of the cap.

I mic my amp, but some people on KZread are getting great sounds with plug-ins in their workstations. I tried using plug-ins a few years ago, but I wasn't liking the sound. My bass amp has an XLR out, so I plug directly from there into my interface. That works great. I'm always up for trying something new.

I generally miced up my small ibanez amp and i had pretty great tone coming out of it! So one day i got a bass guitar and wanted to buy a small amp for it to mic it up (I prefer it over audio interfaces) so i went to the store and checked out some small amps which are made for practicing but great for micing up, and the dude in the register started asking me normla questions that sellers ask like what do you need it for and such. i told him that i needed it for micing up the bass and recording it. and then he started explaining how wrong i am for micing the amps up and not using audio interface and how using one is the CORRECT way to record instruments. i didnt want to have an argument so ilfet without saying anything.

@Dk Mon3yy - Playing music through your amp is certainly possible without damaging the amp or the speaker, but it's important to remember that by doing so you're likely to be adding a great deal of unwanted color to the music. If you're plugging your phone into the guitar input jack, all of the music will go through the same preamp processing your guitar signal experiences before it leaves the speaker, including the EQ controls and any active built-in effects. As clean tones are still affected by the EQ controls, your music will experience coloration even on a clean setting. It won't damage the speaker or the amp, but it's probably not going to sound good. Alternatively, if you have an amp with a dedicated aux input, such as a Boss Katana, the music will not pass through the preamp, and will remain unaffected by your amp's controls. It's not going to sound as good as it would through a dedicated sound system or stereo, but doing so will not damage the speaker or the amp. Strictly speaking, you can damage any speaker if you have enough time and volume, but it's very unlikely at realistic extended listening volumes. Be kind to your ears!

Hey Marty, for a new player looking start basic recording how do you recommend getting the signal from the mic to the PC USB port? This vid is great on mic types to use, but short on tips for connecting them and what type of mics you shouldn't use. In fact the folks at FiFine don't recommend using they're k669 mics for amps because the amps may cause "hissing and feedback". Help needed!

Odin Anderson you have to run your mic through an audio interface and into your daw software. For a good beginner, inexpensive audio interface I recommend the Scarlett Solo from Focusrite. I hope this answers your question!

Odin Anderson I’m sure people have tried that, but I’ve never heard of anybody using a usb mic for an amp. Maybe that’s because the most common mics are XLR and that’s kind of the industry standard. Not sure tho. Virtually everybody I’ve seen uses an audio interface, but it would be worth doing some research on!

im using sm57, my record's tone sounds harsh, especially the lead tone, its not as smooth as how it really sounds from the amp..what could be the problem? im placing the mic 2 fingers away from the speaker and its off center, tried it in all the spots of the speaker and its still the same..help me..thanks.. 🙂

Assuming your microphone is not damaged, and your amp is not too loud (if the SPL of the amp exceeds the Max SPL rating for the microphone, you will experience distortion in the recorded sound regardless of what settings you use on your audio recording interface), then you should consider reducing the gain/volume for the audio interface that controls your recording microphone. If the microphone gain is set too high, you could get unwanted distortion in the recorded line. Alternatively, you could be playing at a volume too loud for the microphone's rated Max SPL. The worst case scenario is that your microphone is damaged and needs replacing. If this is the case, it is possible it was damaged by exposure to a sound source at a level above it's maximum rated SPL. Be careful about leaving microphones too close to an amp, or close to a loud amp! Microphones are not indestructible. I hope this helped. Good luck!

The maximum SPL of your microphone will determine what the maximum volume you can play your amp at is.

My biggest question was about how loud to set the amp??? :( I can set the recording level to match but I need to know if there’s any science in how loud to set the amp. Obviously some amps sound better louder but does that cause problems for recording?

Most microphones have a rating called Max SPL. A microphone ideal for recording guitar amps will have that number be at least 130 or 140 decibels. If it's any lower it will cause distortion in the recording when a loud amp is played. Make sure your mic has a high Max SPL so it can be placed close to an amp speaker.

@@SeemsLikeSomething Not necessarily. It depends on what you mean by a "big" sound. Loud does not necessarily mean big. Loud can quickly become over distorted and sound nothing like the tone you want to captured. A quiet sound that encompasses a wide swath of the EQ spectrum, or that reverberates, can easily be impressive. What matters more than the volume of the speaker is the placement of the microphone recording it. Distance from the plane, angle, and proximity to the cone all affect the recorded sound. Keep in mind the closer to the speaker you get the "proximity effect" will magnify and bass frequencies will become noticeably louder. Sometimes multiple mics help. I plan on experimenting with a two mic setup, one of them being a PGA 52 which is ideal for bass frequencies. Don't rely on volume alone to shape your tone. It can easily create unintended acoustic consequences.

Yeah phase button also let's you do distance and off axis. Let's face it, "your sound" that you tweak and tweak to get usually isn't referenced by you sticking your ear up next to the speaker. Put one in close, one back away and off of the floor, a little closer to your head, and voila! Walk around the room while you are playing. You'll know where the sweet spots are.If it's not in phase with the other mic, hit the switch.

Could be a ground loop. Look into a power conditioner, a Furmen, cost about 80-100 bucks. Helped a bit when I had a shit ton a noise in an old house with shit wiring. I bought a newer house so problem is gone now. Watch videos about ground loop hum and see if it's relative to your problem.

AGREED! The only things that I’ve thought of involve a noise gate pedal or the noise reduction feature found on audacity (for example).

Can i ask someone from the community for advice? Yesterday some jackass drove with 90kph straight into the trunk of my still standing car, i have no huge injurys but my back hurts really much because of the sore muscles. So much that even trying to play my electric guitar is not very pleasant. I play a les paul, so not the lightest guitar possible :/ Any advice to what might help or should i just lay off till my back gets better?

Lee Sanderson I'm not an expert but I suppose you get a different (less perfectly polished) sound that you may prefer. It may add some life to the sound compared to the perfect signal a cable would deliver.

What I heard was blah, blah blah.... What I was looking for was 'to mike an amp what is all the equipment and how is it hooked up. Hope this is helpful.
