Tips & Techniques 244 - How to use Inktense Pencils on fabric

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video shows how to use Inktense Pencils by Derwent on fabric with water. The Inktense pencils become permanent on fabric, as an ink, when water is added. This makes them great for adding a little colour or shading here and there and only water and a brush are needed. An iron is helpful although not necessary to set the ink, once it has been wet and then dried it becomes permanent. Here it is being demonstrated on a year long project called Skitch a Day, a block of the day from www.gourmetquilter.com

Ooo ooo I have a set of 24. Bought over 2 years ago and never learned what to do with them. Now I understand. Did you know if you use fabric with the sizing left in it the colors won't bleed after you make a drawing and then paint it.i learned it today on another channel here. I'm ready to start. I have muslin with the sizing in it and I'm ready to tackle this. Thank you. So much for your inspiration. Ok I need more potatoes. Lol I'm hungry

I absolutely love the quilt you are making. I also want to put out there. If you want them to be permanent on fabric. You need to use heat to set them. Also it is better to use a binder like GAC900 made by Golden , there are other brands as well. Follow directions on the bottle for application. Yes you can use water but still needs to be heat set. If you intend to wash more than once as the color will fade.

Hi, actually they don't need to be heat set, just water and dry. It is ink, remember when we used to get ink on our clothees - well it never came out! A medium is also good but not necessary to do what I am doing here.

I trialed these pencils, including iron set, and it didn't make it through 1 wash. I see no reason whatsoever these are being called "permanent". I've not yet trialed with a binder.

I am new on this channel. I like how you show to dry it with an iron. But Inktense isn’t ink it is high pigmented therefore it looks like ink. I use aso Gac 900.- If you use it on paper, like watercolor, when it is dry you can’t be lift it like normal watercolor.

I bought this set of Inktense pencils for my son this past spring and bought 4 different colors in the Inktense crayon shapes for myself. I am doing a “rubbing” technique on alternate white quilt blocks in the shape of states. I had seen someone do this technique using leaves and could not wait to do it on this quilt. The owner of the art supply shop showed me how to make it permanent, which is pretty easy. Loved your tutorial!

Thanks! I'd heard that inktense work on fabric, but not found anyone showing me how to use them. This was really helpful and informative, especially the tip with using the iron to heatset the ink. 👍 On paper, the white inktense block* dries very opaquely white; I can then go over this with another colour. I wonder whether this would work to make using a light-coloured inktense possible on a dark-coloured fabric? That would further increase the possibilities for making custom quilts like this beauty. 😁 (*The white block dries more opaquely white than the white pencil for some reason. 🤷‍♀️ Maybe the formula is slightly different?)
