There are a few companies offering swimming with sharks. We chose One Ocean Diving oneoceandiving.com. 100 percent safety record. They use professional dive masters, certified instructors, and marine biologists. They offer small groups swimming with sharks in open waters with no cage. They guarantee you 100% to see a shark while you are in the water or your money back.Book your tour as early in the day as possible; at the beginning of your Hawaiian vacation. It takes about 15-25 min to get to the dive location, 3 miles away from the shore. The company provides the whole gear: a rash guard for sun and jellyfish protection and complete snorkeling equipment. You just need to wear your bathing suit and bring a towel. Cost $150.00 if you dive and $105.00 if you just want to ride along. If you do not mind spending extra, for $250.00 they will film a professional video of your experience. Physical Limitations You must be at least 4 feet tall and weigh somewhere between 80 and 250 pounds. Otherwise, you have to request some special accommodations. You have to be physically fit and know how to swim. Now, instructors share some critical information and practical tips on how to minimize the potential for a shark attack. The dive instructors go into the water first, to make sure it is a good location, the sharks are present and are in a good mood. Safety: Now, it is our time to go into the water. We all had to sign a life waiver, and they made it clear that because it is an open ocean, with wild animals, and an uncontrolled environment, nobody can guarantee your safety. Actual Experience We go into the water one by one and have to line up and hang on to the robe. The instructor takes one person at a time, points out the shark in a distance, and helps to dive towards the shark. After that, you have to return to the robe and wait for your next turn. As soon as we got into the water, we had to be alert and constantly look around. Because the sharks are everywhere and they are watching us. They can unexpectedly appear from behind, from the sides, or below. Now, it was my turn. I let go of the robe and snorkeled with the instructor. She pointed out where the shark was and I dived towards it. After that, I had to return back to the robe and wait in line for my next turn. If you are not an experienced diver, I would recommend practicing it somewhere on the safe beach, beforehand. You see, that is me and I swim and snorkel well. But somehow it was challenging for me to dive into the ocean.
Expectations There is no guarantee of how many or what species of sharks you will see, as the environment is constantly changing. But here is a list of species available in this area that you may encounter: - Sandbar Sharks - Galapagos Sharks - Tiger Sharks - Scalloped Hammerheads - Whale Sharks -Great White Sharks - Mako Sharks - Silky Sharks - Oceanic Whitetip Shark - Oceanic Blacktip Shark
Actual time in the water is about 45-60 minutes depending on the weather, shark's behavior, and group size. If you want to spend more time in the water and see more sharks, you need to be brave and be the first one or the last one in line. Otherwise, you will be surrounded by bodies and your views will be blocked. Personally, I felt nervous, so, being in the middle, gave me some extra comfort and some sense of safety. There are only 3 places we are allowed to be: hang on to the robe, dive with the instructor, or be on the boat. We could not explore the ocean and interact with the sharks on your own. They are specifically trained and certified in Hawaii for this particular area so following their rules is life-saving. They understand the shark's language, moods, personalities, and behaviors. They will be with you in the water all the time and monitor the shark's behavioral hues. If the sharks are relaxed and a little curious, it is a good sign. But if they get too excited or irritated, it can be dangerous and the divemaster will immediately guide you to safety.
