I've watched a bunch of book cutting out clips and this is the best one so far. Experience tells and this is the first clip I've seen (except those that used a bandsaw, book press etc, which I don't have)that tells me why my cutting out isn't amazing and how to make sure it is.

I'm making one for my boyfriend, hell unwrap it and be like oh it's a book, but then he'll open it and his presents will be in there.😁 He's not much of a reader so, it's fun for both of us!!

I can’t remember which comedian had a bit about this but it goes like this. This kid was going off to college and would always ask his grandmother for money. Instead she gave him a bible. He would continue to ask for the next year if she could write him a check. Little did he know if he just bothered to flip through the bible, he would’ve discovered that it was hollowed out and filled with cash.

When I searched for hollowed book tutorials, I didn't expect your name to pop up! I still have lines from some of your poetry performances rattling around my brain a decade later. I've made a few boxes by gluing the pages together first and have always had those little paper threads. Can't wait to try this method on my next one!

I used to do that as a secretive teen though it pains me to ruin a book like that. Just a suggestion: if you make your template the same size as a page, you can skip the pencil tracing step.

That's totally true, but then the template would only work for books with the same size pages. I tend to reuse templates, but vary the size of the books.

Thank you! I now have two improvements that make my books even better: I no longer use the template to mark where i should cut, which takes time. Instead, I simply cut all the TEXT out of every page. Basically, I use the margins that already exist on every page that features a FULL BLOCK of text (no chapter headings or endings. Now, this does create a pretty THIN and delicate wall to the book, but that's where tip 2 comes in: Use MOD PODGE to solidify the carved out pages! I'd never heard of it before, but it's a crafty gluelike shellack that seals things together. The tip from this video that still applies is the cardboard under the 20 pages you cut. You don't want ghost cuts; that's what makes the edges messy.

Great tip. I've only ever seen people glue the pages and then cut. I've tried it and it's just like you said: threads and uneven sides. It's a mess... Very well said, thank you. Super easy to follow. Only question is, what if you don't want to use a container? Is it possible to glue the pages after cutting? Another issue i have is that cutting kills my hand after a while, but i guess trying it this way might save them some grief?
