Thank you and thanks for watching. Between Running a business running a home and having a special needs baby, it was hard to put together this video but it was fun! Being your own boss has a lot of benefits but its also a lot of hassle. I just wanted to help out anyone who was thinking about taking that step by giving some tips. I enjoy watching your videos. Just make sure you take your time when working. Not being a critic at all just don't want to see ya get hurt. I learned so much from that Jerry Beranek dvd series. You should check it out if you haven't seen it. It helped me a lot!

Spot on bud, my wife and I did a lot of the same when we started our service, some of them though we figured out the hard way, from under bidding to taking on too big a job to learning the benefit of subcontracting and being a subcontractor,I did get my first climb kit from Wesspur too, the kit discount plus being able to customize it and hands on customer service was hard to beat. Great video again

Another thing read books or listen to audiobooks on multi-level sales techniques. Very valuable. Words can make the sale or lose the sale. When they are a go stop talking and leave. Then come back do the job and get paid. And don't be cheap on services provided. Always give a bit over the top. It pays down the road big time.

Thanks Joe- Every part of this video is what I needed to hear. I'm working on the side (just the easy, no-cleanup jobs for folks I know) and until now-a handshake was my contract. I realize this is stupid, but the leap to insurance and contracts/LLC, etc just seems like a giant hurdle that's hard to overcome or justify while working another job. If you ever want to tackle a video like that which would explain the finer details of contracts, LLC process, insurance- there would probably be a lot of guys in your debt for the effort. Thanks a million and God Bless you and your family.

Hi Joe. I enjoyed your video, you covered a lot of great points for anyone starting any kind of service related business. Nice video. Really like the swimming in the money and spam can! The sena communication makes working in the trees alot safer and better. I believe alot of people are worried about starting a business because they don't have everything figured out. After 8 years running a business I still haven't figured out everything. My goal everyday is to continue learning and improving. Jerry's dvds are good and also ISA has online courses that are great. A little expensive, but worth it. Just my 1 cents.

Thank you! Yeah its one thing to climb and another to know how to safely cut and rig. Well the very first truck was an old forestry bucket truck and by old i mean 1981 old lol I would no recommend that at all lol I picked up a chevy 3500 dump and built a wooden chip box on it and it has been great. Easy to get in and out of yards. I didn't have a trailer at first. We had a chuck n duck chipper.

Jamal Hicks you can try cl. We did home advisor at first. It’s good at getting your name out there but the leads are low quality. I would recommend a local paper advertisement and phone book. Just do good quality work and your name will spread!

As long as you take yourself serious, other people will respect that! You will certainly have those people who will rase there nose to you but thats life! Get some training and know what you are doing and be professional and people will respect you! You have to earn your reputation and that can take years however it only takes a minute to ruin it so be smart with what you say and do! Go for it!

I’m 20, and I look a little young for my age, but so far I have been treated with respect and seriousness from every customer I’ve ever dealt with. I am very articulate, professional, and act older than I am. I can’t say the same from others in the industry, i have had to earn respect the hard way. But keep in mind at 17 it’ll be tough for various reasons, registering a business in some states isn’t legal til 18, renting equipment or getting crane crews is a no go til you’re 18, and obviously if you apply for a loan or driving a work vehicle is a no til you’re 18 as well. That’s in my state, so you’ll have to check your state laws. Good luck with it, it’s a very stressful and expensive start up, but it smoothes out and pretty soon it’s the greatest thing you could hope for

You lost me at the insurance policy. Maybe when you actually have any kind of assets or money to take... But otherwise, you're forking over for something that you shouldn't be using to begin with, and if you do have to use it, it's no easier than forcing the client to take you to court. You're still going to shit on your own business if you break something. Point number one SHOULD have been, "Don't take jobs you can't handle"
