Ok so I got an old sewing machine from my Nan and am trying to make my girls some costumes for their school, after not having sewn before...ever. I cannot believe I didn't think to iron the hem before sewing! This will make it much easier, as I kept sewing unevenly with the fabric wanting to return to its flat state :D Thanks for sharing!

Great idea to practice with a thrift store bought sheet!! I just started sewing myself and I have to say that was one of my fears...buying material and wasting the money because I ruined it by making a mistake, lol. I literally stared at the instructions, the pattern and the material for about a week and a half before I had the nerve to start a project, lol

I used a pattern for the first time and it was a front, two sides and a back but only did front and back, herpaderp. What you said about jersey is interesting as I was I making a costume last year and was told that as a beginner, I should never use jersey, don't even look at jersey, following their advice I got cotton and it ripped >: and had no costume. So I really appreciate hearing that beginners can use jersey.

I can't believe I came across your video I have got the same pattern and I hope to make that skirt you had made. Even though you used a sheet it still looked very good. I am not that good at patterns and I am just learning. Material is so expensive and sewing clothes is not a cheap hobby. The pattern may look great, you make it up and it doesn't seem to work for you. But that's the way it goes.

@SnowRabbit16 Thanks, glad you liked the tips. I speed up the sewing part because this particular video is about patterns in general, not really the one I was working on. If I had been doing a partern walk-through for a specific pattern then the footage would have been slower and more detailed.

The cutting board is a large cardboard one that folds up. You can get them at most fabric stores for about $15-$20. It helps with laying out large pieces of fabric and patterns. :)

Hey Whitney! Thank you so much for making this video (and please make more about sewing patterns!). I just picked up some McCall's patterns (on sale for 99 cents at Joann's!), however I'm still so terrible at using them. I've tried using patterns a good handful of times now, and I always seem to mess something up. Maybe you could also talk about different tips for when working with a skirt vs a blouse vs a dress?

@jeco5 The sheets I used still had a salvage like edge on the long sides. So I used that as the salvage and lined the arrows on the pattern pieces up with it. It worked out really well. There are a lot of websites that have great info on how to find the fabric grain if you have a piece with all cut edges. Just do a google search and you should be able to find everything you need.

@morochaenil It means to sew a straight stitch from the edge to the center in the arrow direction and then from the other edge to the center. Stay stitching is used on pieces that will be handled a lot while making the pattern and is supposed to prevent the fabric from stretching out of shape while you're working with it. Hope that helps :)

Fabulous and so pretty!! I have been "working" on my first ever pattern. A Simplicity pattern marked "easy". A lovely summer dress in the most gorgeous fabric but have hit a bit where I am stumped (shoulder straps to underarm and bodice) and so I lost faith and material has been packed back in its bag and machine put away :( Scared to continue.

The video is called TIPS for sewing pattern beginners because I was just sharing tips I've learned over the years from working with patterns. I have a whole series with other pattern reading info broken down into sections. I don't like doing sewing pattern walk throughs where it goes through a pattern from start to finish because all patterns are different and someone would have to have that exact pattern for it to be useful.

  • @Whitney_Sews

@bloodykisses56 I suggest you make something like a pair of pajama pants first. That way you can get some practice reading patterns and if you mess up and they don't look perfect it's ok, they are still wearable. I know pj pants probably sounds boring, but that was the first pattern I used and it helped me learn the basics of patterns. Hope that helps you out :)

I've taken a couple of sewing classes at Joann Fabrics (one that's taking place in a couple of weeks) and patterns really aren't that bad. I'm still getting the hang of it but I do prefer patterns when making things.

@UntoldDarkness66 Most of the skirts I make can be shortened to the length you want. If you look at my first episode where I showed how to make a circle skirt it might help you out. For that one you make your own pattern and you can make it any length you want. As for why all the skirts I make are knee length...I don't wear shorter skirts and I don't want to make something for an episode that I won't be able to use.

I see a large cutting 'board' on the floor. It's brilliant! How big is it, what did you use, where did you get it, what is it made of? Is it just quilting cutting boards hooked together??? I have wood (bamboo) floors throughout my home and it's difficult to cut anything on them because the wood is so soft and leaves every mark (not a good thing at all). Please let me know!! :) Thanks for all the great info and inspiration.
