    I don't know how to skate (yet) but just fell in love with sport recently. I went to a game spontaneously because it was an event on a 'free and cheap tings to do near you' kind of site. Like lots of people, I'd watched Whip It when I was younger and loved it, but I hadn't realized how empowering, progressive, engaging, and fun this sport was. I literally have never liked one sport in my life- I like doing things, but not spectating, you know? But roller derby is something else. It's like if drag, women's wrestling, soccer, football, and a gay club had a love child. The players have big personalities and it's the only really athletic contact sport I can think of that's women only. There are lots of gay women and nonbinary players, and they make their fan feel welcome and are super down to earth. In general, they are much more amateur friendly and are so excited to see people learning to skate, unlike toxic dude bros in other sports who gatekeep and try to humiliate you. I've always been a stronger, more muscle dense plus size girly who builds muscle easily so I can't wait to learn to skate and see what I can do. I hope I can play derby one day. You guys are really great hosts btw. Could watch this for hours.

    I have a few more questions. Really getting interested in the sport of Roller Derby) I notice the numbers on team athlete's shirts range from single digit numbers and some up to 4 digit numbers. 1. Is the reason for the higher digit because so many athletes joining the home team they have to go to the higher numbers? 2. Does the athlete choose the number? 3. Does the athlete's number stay with them for life of that team even if they switch teams?

  • @DownandDerbyTalk

    @DownandDerbyTalk

    4 жыл бұрын

    You totally pick your own number and as long as no one else on your team has that number then you’re good. Sometimes you’ll notice 2 people like the number 13 so you’ll have a 13 and a 1313 it’s totally up to you! Does that help?

  • @deltafour1212

    @deltafour1212

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes it does. When you "retire" from the sport. Does the team automatically retire your number?

  • @DownandDerbyTalk

    @DownandDerbyTalk

    4 жыл бұрын

    deltafour1212 I suppose it depends on the team and why you retire. We had a team somewhat local to us who lost a player to suicide and they did retire her jersey last season.

    I have a question. Why do they wear the low top skates with a no heal rather than the traditional high top skates with heals? It would seem you would have better ankle support with high top skates.

  • @DownandDerbyTalk

    @DownandDerbyTalk

    4 жыл бұрын

    deltafour1212 Great question!! Well, when you are skating around the track at high speeds you tend to lean quite far into the inside of the track, having the sorter boots give us more range of motion and the no heel gives us more stability. Think of hockey skates vs figure skates, they are both great for their respective jobs. As is the same with traditional roller skates and roller derby skates. If you look at older videos they did use those skates but as with all things, derby skates have evolved into what they are today to better our game play. Hope that helps!

  • @DownandDerbyTalk

    @DownandDerbyTalk

    4 жыл бұрын

    You can get high top derby skates, the brand Antik Skates has a few styles that are a high top. I believe the reason they don't have a heel has to do with stability. A lower heel allows for a more even weight distribution on the back and front of the plates.

    How much do people usually pay for a derby season?

  • @DownandDerbyTalk

    @DownandDerbyTalk

    4 жыл бұрын

    Silvia Gutierrez so that really depends on your league, depending on how many skaters you have, how much the facilities cost to rent and all of that. We pay $50/month if that helps. I am pretty sure that’s kind of average-Eleanor
