One ministry I worked with for a couple years, the worship leader was also the MD. He used the HotShot to talk to the band, and because the entire band really knew the Number System to the point of chords within a key, he could call out spontaneous chord progressions through the Number System, and we would write original music and lyrics from the stage for 2 hours straight.

Long-time follower here... I think you boys have identified a need for an online MD course. I'm a keys player who has been asked to MD for my big church. First time we've had an MD, so it's brand new (for me and the band). I'm sure are others in the same boat. Looking forward to more content like this!

You should make a video something along the lines of “The three levels of MD’ing.” This video was like what is MD’ing. The next could be how to MD. Knowing when it can be to much, things like that.

I think what Sam is referring to is more of a step by step on “how to” actually MD. Like a here’s step one, behind the scenes of a service for a beginner who is timid and not exactly sure how to start. (Example: opening up the service, going through a whole song but in detail, transitions, what works behind speaking engagements, etc..) I guess more practical information if that makes sense. This video is amazing though! Just trying to clarify these things because there are a lot of people who are confused who are going with the flow and trying to take on the role of an MD but not sure if they are doing it right. I’ve been in that boat before (no longer doing that at the moment) and it can be stressful because if you are lacking or doing too much the band can get a little angry and ticked off at you at times. Anyways sorry for the book, this would be cool to cover!

Hi, good day!!!! Been watching your videos lately. I feel blessed and I really learned a lot. I play E.Guitar at my local church and at some point, I have been assigned to act as an MD but the only difference is that since we're a local church here in our city, we don't use in-ear monitors and so when we perform on a Sunday service, the worship leader does all the leading. If possible, can you make a video regarding small churches should be using in-ear monitors? And how can small churches' worship team improve leading worship? I hope to hear from you soon. I really learned a lot from your videos and content. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and ideas on leading Worship. God Bless!!!!

I've actually used a talk back mic to our drummer and our sound tech on stage, next to my vocal mic. That worked beautifully. Not using it now, since we had a new drum booth built and it needs to be wired. But it works great unless you have that little system set up. I also don't use in-ears currently, although I have in the past.

Hey i have a question, I play e-guitar at my church (we dont use tracks) and we are planing to use an MD. How do I het started? We use In-ear monitoring and our leaders often use Talkback to adress stuff but we try and take pressure off the leaders and have a dedicated person doing the job. Personally i sometimes struggle with my parts and dont have the clearness to listen to the band as a whole. greetings from Germany :P

Do professional bands use MD's when they are live like Metallica or Disturbed? or is this something that was conceived only for the live worship space? Like who thought of this technique?

I think that having an MD in your ear ruins worship. As a musician, you should be prepared to play your part properly, and when you are on the stage, you worship, knowing your part. Worship is supposed to be worship, NOT a production, and absolutely NOT a concert. Granted, if there is an issue, etc., then yes there should be an in ear for an MD to cut in and say something, but as a musician you should know your transitions and where they come. As a musician, this would completely distract me from actually making the music and enjoying it, as God intended it to be.

@@ocbfdog agreed. it takes time but both having your musicians know their parts before hand, and having an M.D will further solidify transitions and sections that could lead to error. It's about keeping communication up, and errors to a minimum
