There are also people like LavenderTowne that make the pupils into different shapes too. I feel like stylization is just figuring out which rules you want to keep, break, and bend. And which rules you're just making up out of whole cloth.

Agreed, and for me I’ve kept the same style ever since I begun drawing 4 years ago. I’ve def improved but I feel like if you’d put two of my drawings side by side you could tell it was made by the same person.I’ve never tried to find or get rid of my “style” so I find it intresting how it’s been with me ever since I started

I found my art style through combinations and tweaks. Take some aspects of an art style you really like and combine aspects from other styles that you like and modify it. It’s tough to find a style and you may change your mind a hundred times. But you’ll find it!

Am important thing to do (that's not exactly necessary) is to learn how to draw things as you see it without too much stylization at first. That way you learn the rules before you break them. With the way that I learned my style, I studied anatomy and the basic proportions of the face, so now I can tweak those rules to fit my style! Plus, drawing faces and bodies became easier since I learned it at the start!

The first actually good video about this topic that I've seen. Often people just advise to look at other people's styles and incorporate your favourite elements from those in your own. But this is a much better approach and very well explained, thank you!

What about making a collage of specific styles you like, not just from media, but from your favorite YT artists too then tweak it a bit so you're not outright copying 🙂

I think my artstyle is inspired by koolen and sam does arts if im in digital art, and A (from pinterest, im such a big fan of them) and noodle if im in traditional art

I think I may be satisfied with my current artstyle. Its cute and chili and I grabbed bits and pieces of other peoples artstyles that I always wanted in mine and mixed them together now after three years everyone I come across adores my art. Just as I hopes for. ♡

Also you should try to draw what you normally draw! It's funner to draw stuff you want to draw instead of working super hard(unless it's fun) or barely trying.

I call my style ✨Amalgamation✨ because it’s made up of different styles from different things I took inspiration from lol like example- eyes(seven deadly sins and Steven universe), body types(experimental but buff bodies from DBZ and a bit of One Piece), hair(Steven universe) and etc- if I like how a certain part is drawn in shows, books or just anything, I add it to my style with my own twist and I keep adding stuff that I like to improve my style and over time it just became it’s own thing- everyone’s style is unique including mine so don’t feel bad if you think your style is bad compared to other people’s because you’re just as great at drawing as them💕💕💕

My eye style is similar to yours. Except I make the purples the same color as the iris, but a darker shade.

I use many different art styles depending on the character(s). For example, when i draw my friend froggy's character I make the features very bold and adorable because that's the vibe I get from her character. For my character, I draw it very mature but cute because that's how I imagine she'd look. Then sometimes I draw chibi characters to make expressions easier to see.

My art style is quite simple but like by quite i mean REALLY simple like Face = circle with a curved line and 2 dots, hair and ears make it weird And usually each drawing will take between 50 seconds to 6 minutes

What I find myself doing is sorta just looking at artists I like and going "oh I like that *steals*". When I first started drawing I was just copying existing anime art and then when I got into fanart, a certain game with a black and white bear imprinted on me and now my style has some basis in that games style (ie. Hair, specifically ahoge, and irises changing with expressions)

Finding art style can take a long time. if your fundamentals are lacking it will make it harder to find your style. also so if you’re struggling it could be that you need to practice fundamentals.

Ive been wondering about this

So, in your opinion, would you say it's a necessity to study realism before trying to find your style? If so, study it to what extent? I always need a picture to draw ANYTHING (I'll copy other people's art in a sketchbook solely for practice). I've even tried copying blank poses, then adding my own clothes and whatnot. Nothing ever seems to look right, so it gets frustrating. Especially when I excel at realistic portraits, which some would argue are more difficult. So should I just continue studying bodies and drawing poses until something clicks?

The way you find your style, is you don't. No artist finds their style. They find what they like about others styles and mix and match them together till they find something they like. Artists never stop improving and we never stop stealing, that's how you will "find your style"
