TIPS FOR DRIVING IN NEW ZEALAND

I put together a helpful video that will help you with driving in New Zealand. These were a bunch of areas that I thought were important to pay special attention to. New Zealand is a super beautiful place, but it has extremely windy roads so make sure to be extra careful.

    Kiwi here; excellent video, I hope more people watch this video and heed your advice: we want people to come here and have a great time, not end up in an horrendous road crash. Driving in NZ can be a challenge even if it's just being distracted by the scenery ;-) One thing I might point out though is that a white sign with a red circle around it is a speed limit that you must obey. However a yellow sign is an advisory (like windy road ahead), if it has a speed then that is a recommended speed to take the corner that is comfortable, but it's not a limit. Other than that minor nitpick valuable video.

    Yellow speed limit signs (just like in the US) are ADVISORY, and tell you the recommended speed for the curve for example

    Hey NZer here. Yellow signs are recommended speed signs. Also part way through you have arrows pointing in the wrong direction on the road. Also if you have faster traffic behind you regardless of how fast you are going let it pass you.

    New Zealand needs major investments/improvements in its road infrastructure!… Wider roads with more lanes and much better signage! Considering the fact that railroads are not common in New Zealand and roads are the only way to get around, there should be much more roads with much better designs.

    The red and white signs are the legal limit, yellow ones are advisory like this curve is advised to be 60 kph.

  • @robinfox4440
    @robinfox4440Ай бұрын

    Yeah those yellow signs are recommendations for those curves. NZ has a lot of issues around driving and infrastructure is certainly among the issues. Bad drivers is another one but sounds like you had a decent time.

    The road construction is because of earthquakes, over the past 10 years we have had a lot of earthquakes, most notably in 2010 and 2011 which devastated Christchurch and the surrounding areas, and Kaikora, we are still rebuilding Christchurch even now. The quakes have petered off but still get one every now and then. Most of the road construction is because of them.

    @@worldnomac The place is full of faults. That is where we get all the volcanos, mountain ranges and fjords from. Earthquakes happen several times a day. No body really pays attention unless its over a 4.5 or 5..... Nice driving by the way - you are one of those people who will be welcome any time.

    I noticed that you Mentioned the south island... Does that differ in any way from the north island? I'm this video alone, I'm questioning whether I should Rent a car. I'm a safe driver. But, just like you, I'm from the states; and more specifically, a plain's state. With the scenery as a distraction, I'm getting concerned that my " I'm gonna do it on my own" traveling style might meet it's match in New Zealand.

    Kiwis are use to the windy roads and its usually the locals that speed, and our roads are constantly being maintained, this is New Zealand one tenth of the States

    Great video and should be shown on all inbound flights to remind people to take care as NZ roads are definitely not typical highways. A recommendation to ALL tourists doing a wine tour , drinking, or over tired is to not drive. We revert to what comes naturally and many tourists unfortunately cross over to the wrong side of the road, several recently with fatal consequences. This is the reason you see arrows painted on the roads including after one way bridges. Happy travels if you are visiting NZ I'm sure you will have a lot of wonderful memories 😁

    I drive a left hand car(just like the US) never driven a right hand car. Worried as I'm going with my kids.Not very confident I can do it. Do you think I should skip renting a car? And book tours instead.

    Those yellow road signs are not the legal speed limit, they are a suggestion on what the government thinks is a safe speed to take that corner at

    It makes a lot of sense. It would be great if all tourists were forced to get a short run through on the signs when entering the country. It seems only some rental places do that for some people. Better safe than sorry :)
