Definitely... not much out there specifically based on bebop and jazz in general. There are some that try to talk about but fail mostly... Drumeo and 80/20 drummer come to mind. Q knows his stuff! The drumeo guys should pay him to do a whole course!

That’s exactly what I said! Great channel!
It's when you incorporate the rests in your soloing that the subtleties come out. Great video as always Q. I barely get to practice but your content is a plethora of noble reminders on the art and craft of jazz drumming.

I appreciate that Dark👊🏾. Yes, the silence in solos is usually the best part:)
Got recommended this as an ad, never click on them but sth abt it brought me here. Love the community feel in the comments, and love the way you present the info. You just gained a subscriber.

This lesson was perfectly exactly what I needed to hear 😆. Loved the “Common thread” approach. I feel like I need more of that in my trades.

Glad it was helpful Mike G!
At first I thought the lesson was going to be on how to be a hibachi chef with the way you were flipping those sticks around. Glad that little girl set you straight. I’m guilty of almost always listening and playing off of the others in the group, or I’ll try to feed them something if I feel the group needs to go a different direction. So, I’ll have to keep these tips in mind so I don’t get stuck doing the same thing over and over. When you named Jimmy Cobb and Frankie Dunlop right out of the gate I was like yes sir! Two of my all time favorites! Keep doing what you do Quincy! Your channel kills! Only one I never miss. FP ✌🏼

Yeah, I was a little bit out of my lane with the flips at the beginning Frankie; perhaps a bit misleading, but glad you stuck around to figure out what I was actually trying to teach :-) thanks as always, for watching my videos, my friend.
Trading = Timed Exchange we trade before and after other players, ideas work well when musicians use the exchange to enhance the musical elements of the compo. The balance of min/max contributions is so well explained by Quincy. I remember a sax trade that was so amazing the drummer waited through his trade and just at the end tapped Di Bop ie. Thankyou Quincy

Spanish Ned here for some more Qwisdom. Another solid hunk of great advice in how to keep steady while using your creativity. Plus the classic " say it and play it " method . Lovely expressive rebounding and resounding Mr Davis. Until next time, all the best.

Great tips for trading “4’s” ! I liked especially 4 ; keeping your ear a tuned to what the previous player did and 5 ; having a theme from one 4 bar phrase to the next. Metric modulation really kicks my butt. Thanks

Another great video like the idea about less is more!
@drumqtips

Less is most the time usually always better than more because we naturally want to play more…than less. That makes total non-sense🤣🤣. See you next week!
Great video!! I love your technique. When I read the video title, I thought you meant actually swapping drums. Like buying, selling, trading drums. Lol.

That’s exactly it TC. I was actually using these tips and tricks last night. Helped!
First of all thanks for all of the information; I probably owe you lunch and/or dinner by now! Following up on the thinking ahead and listening points I feel like it might be very insightful to hear how this works in a live setting versus just playing time. Just to clarify, if there was a good rhythm section that wouldn't mind you speaking what you're thinking over their solos and how they develop together.

Hearing these approaches in a live situation, would definitely help a lot Nicky! And don’t worry about lunch just keep on watching my videos, my friend :-)

Hey Q, really enjoying the videos! Have to save every single one so I can go back and put them into my playing 😂. Should I always keep the 2 and 4 on hihat going all the time even during trading? Or can I do it some times and not others?
Trading was always (and still is) the weakest part of my playing. Thanks for those great tips!

Me too Christoph! Hope the lesson helps.
I noticed master drummers take inspiration from other musicians during solos, like a game of catch. If you listen to Ari Hoenig's "Billie's Bounce" live at Smalls, you'll hear that he's "catching" phrases usually at the end of every solo and uses it as his starting point. Thanks for sharing these tips, Q!

Great point! I can recount a few times that if I'd thought less about my "plethora" of chops and listened more the whole room may have benefited.

Odd approach to me. I go for listening to what they are playing and try to get a conversation going between all the instruments mimicking a phrase for instance then changing it slightly next guy does something similar than were on a role.. form and ears ate king
