It’s so nice to find a beekeeper here in California to model after. I live on the coast here in central CA and much of the info on beekeeping that I find pertains to the climate of the midwest and on, so I am so happy to have found your site!

yeah they are doing great i feed them like you did yours and in less than a week the patties are almost gone good times thank you for asking I could see the burn from my bee yard ok keep doing videos I love the important content

Nice looking hives. Great job on your videos! Just found you & subscribed. Hope to see some queen rearing. Always trying to hone my skills, in SC. I've been mixing my pollen in cement mixer. That nutrabee looks pretty good.

NOTE, What maybe good for 1 Keeper may not be good for others. Like me i wont feed patties past Sept when the Queen is shutting down. I will only feed sugar syrup and not corn syrup. I found winter shedding BEEs corn syrup can cause nausema in the hive because they are cooped up for 5 months where as sugar syrup wont. Remember i am in upper mid west brutal cold and snow. For me to feed a pollen sub in oct can be death to my hives

What are your thoughts on giving them a pollen patty during winter, specifically if they are going into a shed for winter.

Here in California we do place patties in the winter so that the girls can brood up before almonds. I'm personally not familiar with keeping bees in the sheds but I do know that some guys will place patties before going into the sheds. Hope that is helpful 👍

What ratio of sugar water you give for winter

hey quick question. What would you advice I use in order to build up brood production for winter. I've heard people say using 1 and 1 but I've also heard that you should use use half corn syrup and sugar water. Any suggestions?

I would do 1 to 1, maybe mix in a few extra gallons to thin out just a bit. The main goal is to have them pack it in for the winter but with still having warmer temps thinning the syrup a little will help stimulate the queen. I'd also throw a pallen patty. The both together will give some stimulation.

Well just a couple thoughts here, give us and up date when you return on that sub and give us the good bad or ugly, next time you visit the yard , also if you buy it by the pallet it comes with ready to use wax paper, most of the time the patty doesn't need any sugar or powder it is made non sticky. One more thing Nutra Bee comes in about 10 different thickness of patties so to fit anyone's needs.Very nice video btw. Keith

Keith, well let's start with "Thank you" Thanks for checking out our video.👍 We will be heading back in a week to check out this yard and give an update on the Nutra-bee, we'll let you know how that goes🤙. Good to know about purchasing a pallet and recieving wax sheets also about coating it with sugar or powder. When we head back to that yard we will apply patties without the sugar or powder👍 We get our patties through Brad (CanAm) So it's good to know about the purchase of a pallet and wax sheets. That is a great question. We are using pollen substitute. This is called Nutrabee. If your BEES aren’t bringing in pollen, it is good to find what Beekeepers in your area are using when they’re using it and why they’re using it and I would shadow a beekeeper that has successfully kept colonies alive for a few years. Different areas have different ways in keeping BEES. If you have any questions on pollen sub, and what percentage to use, send me a message.

jose i asked you about drivert sugar do you use that in your feed sugar syrup ? or just to coat the pollen patties and yes the fire passed right by my hives

Not for feed, drivert is used to coat the patties. Thank goodness! Happy to hear your bees are safe🙏

How much do those block of patties cost?

jose ive had zero luck with my queens coming back from mating flights and I wonder if there's not enough drones around I know late in the season the hive boots them out but I'm talking spring also , should I put a drone frame in one of my hives

Normally in the spring there should be plenty of drone stock with hives nearby. Yes you should try and sticking in a drone frame to help with that.

Are you using a mating nuc? If the yard is in nice little rows and the same color the queens can lose track of which hive is hers. Try plenty of unique markings and colors and put them in different directions and not in rows. Hope that helps.

Have you ever tried 2 queen cells per mating Nuc?

I have not. I have tried it in a single brood box when I’m not sure if the one of the cells was handled wrong. That usually happens on the last one being installed

How many boxes are you interested in Abel? The closest location to you would be Orland Ca.(CanAm Inc) or Sunrise Feed and Supply in Oakdale Ca

How do you combat shb? Here in HI, the little bastards make a mess in the sub. Not sure what to do

That's a great question Tadd. I know a breeder in Hawaii and I will ask him that question. We dont have issues with Hive beetles here but in recent years have seen them make their way West due to the east coast beeks coming here for almond pollination. Get back to you on your question. I’ve been wanting to try Nutra Bee over the past couple years, but have been unable to find anyone selling it. After watching both Ian Stepplers and your videos regarding Nutra Bee my interest has been spurred on. Can you hook me up with some info to try and order some in the US. We get our pollen from a larger outfit in Northern California who deals it. I'll reach out to Keith and Wendy Jarrett to ask if they have other dealers in the U.S. We love using this stuff and see results!

Hi Jose, I’m new to your channel. I am having such a hard time finding a beekeeper mentor or at least a bee club to join so that I can learned all the do’s and don’t’s before getting honey Bee’s. Can you direct me on how to find one? I live in California in San Bernardino county

Have you noticed a difference in using nuta bee to say ultra?

I have noticed they really take down the Nutra Bee fast and build out is excellent. Good boost! I have a lot of buddies throughout California that like ultra bee. We here good things about boosting up the laying like the nutrabee. What pollen sub do you use?

I saw a product awhile back by another keeper but dont remember who or the product name, all i remember is that it helps boost immunity, i want to say maybe probiotics i think. If you know what it is please share. Thanks

There are a few dusting products out there that I know beeks use (Super DFM by Strong Microbial, Pro DFM by Mann lake.) I have tried both and based on trying both DFMs commercially I would recommend the ProDFM based on field assessment. Hope that helps, and thank you for watching

8:40 - If they are bringing in so much pollen that they have nearly a full frame of excess, does the pollen patty REALLY do that much good? Seems like a bit of a waste if they have a surplus.

Giving pollen is beneficial. Bees eat the pollen, never store it. The pollen stores that are in the frame are best to be kept for the bees to eat through winter. Feeding pollen in the fall builds the bees amino fatty bodies heading into winter when it's needed

Do you not have small hive beetles in California? If i put a patty on that big i would have every hive beetle in Ohio in my hive lol thanks for your vides I'm from Ohio and very interested in the almond planation process

Dave, thanks for watching 👌 We do get hive beetles nowadays from out of state bees. Beetles dont seem to survive our weather but have heard them living longer in some parts of the state. What pollen sub do you use and do you have to do open pollen feeding or patties?
