Awesome thanks bro the world needs more people like you 🇮🇪☘️☘️☘️☘️
Like you, I've grown 12 tomato plants outdoors and 12 in my polytunnel greenhouse. I've left the outdoor ones to bush out naturally and the indoor ones I've strung up and pruned heavily as they've grown to see what the differences are. Experimenting like this adds to the excitement of gardening I feel.
I grew tomatoes outside last year. I grew mine in a big tub and they came out yummy.
Super healthy tomato 🍅 specimens! Impressive! 😃
I put mine out at the end of May here in Yorkshire. Good luck!
Healthy Toms🍅 Tony, cold snap on its way though, get your fleece ready for the nights🧣 wrape them up , good luck . Takecare👍
Last year I grew some tomatoes that came up in my vermicompost. I put them outside and they actually grew and set tomatoes but they didn’t have enough time to ripen. In Anchorage you really need a greenhouse. The tomatoes I have in the house are already getting little tomatoes. I was building a poly cover but got ill and landed in hospital ER last night. Gotta get it done. Still feeling punk. That wall should help absorb heat.
Hi Tony, I’d cover them with fleece this weekend as there’s a good frost expected this weekend.
Hi Tony, I have always grown outside. I hope they have survived the cold snap we have had over the past couple of days. I am in Lincolnshire and mine will be going out in about a week. If we have a summer anything like last year you should be absolutely fine. Just keep a close eye out for blight. A damp season and you could have the whole crop wiped out. I tend to get rid of the lower leaves pretty early on if we are in for a damp spell over summer to help airflow between the plants. I see you do your spuds in pots as I do. As an extra precaution I also try and keep the spuds at a good distance away from the toms. Great channel by the way, Thanks.
All the best for a bumper crop of tomatoes Tony! Enjoyed this planting. 🍅💚
Tony, been growing them outside in gateshead for last 15 year (against a south facing wall). The best ones ive found for NE england are moneymaker and gardeners delight, usually out mid may - always get a few left green though, they seem tp grow better in the ground than in pots
Planted 30 outside yesterday and crossing everything . They were struggling in their pots so i had to go for it . 💖
Hi Tony them toms do look good, I’m growing crimson crush/blush out side for the first time this season, your braver than me to plant them out now, good luck looking forward to see how they get on take good care kind regards alan🌿 THE DAWN CHORUS PLOT
Tony, your tomato plants are beautiful! Well done! I've never grown tomatoes INSIDE but live in a very different climate, 6B in the US. My tomato bed is against a south facing wall and tomatoes love it. I agree that the wall planting in your garden will provide heat the plants will enjoy. I look forward to watching the progress!
I have grown tomatoes out side in Nova Scotia fo the last 15 years(zone 5b) so far so good!!!
🏴 Good luck with you outside Tom's, I'm still trying to get to grips with growing the indoor ones 🙈🙈🙈🙈😂😂😂😂👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Tony, as long you prune them( they are a little cramped in your bed) so the air can flow through, they should be fine. Good luck. Tamara
I've always grown tomatoes outside. However, I am in the southern part of the USA, so our weather is a bit different than yours. I think those ones on that wall should do nicely. Remember, tomatoes love the heat! Good luck!
Your plants look happy. tomatoes grow roots along their stem. If you clip off the lower leaves, and plant the tomato deeply, or on it's side, to bury most of the stem, it will encourage stronger root growth!
Hiya 😊 I'm currently in a flat with a greenhouse-ish balcony so I tend to do all my gardening indoors. But now I'm feeling my tomatoes asking me if they can play outside haha! Thankful for this video and all the commenters doing the same for the same climate! 😊
I always grow them outdoors but I haven't moved them outside yet and I'm much further south than you. Frost is forecast this weekend so they'll hopefully go out next week if the 14 day forecast looks good. You have nice stocky plants. I hope they get through the weekend OK.

To be fair to Tony (and me), we both live by the coast. Temperatures don't drop quite like they do further inland. We're warmer in the winter, and cooler in the summer. More temperate, fewer extremes. Same latitude as Moscow here.

@@raymartin7172 Good point. As Rigsby used to say, "There's nothing between us and the Urals."
I just took the leap and planted out my sweet corn. I live in Northumberland 🤞🤞
It’s my first yr growing anything and my tomatoes are going to go outside just because I don’t have any indoor space. I’ll watch yours with interest though as mine aren’t out yet!
Put mine in last weekend (Dublin, Ireland), they looked more miserable indoors, perking up now 👍🏻
Hi Tony, I've grown tomatoes outside now for four years, there has only been one bad year when I got end rot and had to throw them all away. All the other allottmentiers comment on my tomato plantation I grow that many. I have a plot in North Wales that's quite open and can get very cold and windy up to now I'm happy with the crop I get, and all grown from seed in a small plastic unheated greenhouse. I will take note of the comments about frost as it's been here for a couple of days now. Pete.
Good luck with them, hope they survive, planting mine out next week after the cold weekend.
Here in Minnesota zone 4B most gardeners grow outside including tomatoes. Short season but they do ok- a slow start, and a bit late harvest. They can't go in ground unless covered by fleece or a pot until after 1 June. But it is worth it for that taste! Great video!
another great video. Keep the fleece handy - our magic day for no frost is May 24, but I have things outside too.
I grow Tomatoes outside every year! I always plant them last week of may through June 1st! I'm in a colder climate though! I'm sure you'll be fine! One thing you could do is drape some plastic or cloth off that wall over the tomatoes to help keep frost away! Even an old bed sheet would work!
My dad doesn't agree that it's time to put tamatos out yet but grate vid😆😆😆
04:04 ... had a few moments like that over the last few weeks Tony! Your tomatoes will be great and I’m hoping that mine growing outdoors here in Bonny Scotland will be too! 😊🌱
Lovin the tunes ❤️
Grow tomatoes outside each year in West Scotland. Can’t grow too large varieties as they don’t ripen well but cherry and smallish varieties do fine. It’ll be 3 or 4 weeks before I put them out though. I’m sure yours will be fine so long as you watch out for frost. They might slow down for s bit but then they’ll go great guns I bet. Mags.

hi I know this comment was a wee while ago now and I'm pushing my luck with it but any tips for growing cherry tomatoes on the west coast? I've grown some this year off of some cherry tomatoes I bought but not too sure when to move them outside, I've got a wee greenhouse I could put them in too. cheers
Man you are one fast planter 😉 Great work as always Tony! I don't do tomatoes cause of space.
Hi Tony I stumbled across your video when googling growing tomatoes outside in UK. I live in Fife in Scotland (not far from Edinburgh) and following Storm Arwen and todays storm Malik I'm reconsidering having my greenhouse after chasing polycarbonate sheets around the streets. I would only be using my greenhouse for growing tomatoes in so I'm looking for an update on how your tomatoes grew, both against the wall and on the frame? Great video and you've gained a new subscriber, so hard to find good UK gardening channels. Cheers Nikki
I'm going to follow these tomatoes with interest all summer long Tony..here's hoping for a great crop..
Wow nice garden
Nice looking plants. I prefer to plant out once the plants have their first flowers...
10c this Saturday in London, good luck up there 🍅
Yeah this is my first time as well i have 7 cherry:beefsteak tomatoes 🍅 growing in our yard
Great healthy tomatoes plants the all the best growing them outside
Mine are out against a south-facing wall.. I have fleeced them up for the cold nights to come this weekend. Your bed is quite exposed, do I'd be tempted to protect the young plants, both against frost this weekend, and against wind for the next month or so. Some sort of barrier against the prevailing wind, maybe strong polythene or something that you could whip up if needed. Wind has wrecked my outdoor toms before now. Cheers Ray in Whitley Bay.
At 7500ft altitude it's a crap shoot outside, so I grow in a hoop house and outside. Wind breaks help. It will be another month before I can put them out. Happy May Day.
Just fling a double bit of fleece over man, they'll be ok 😃😄😉
Tomatoes outdoor is good. Nice looking garden. I see a lot of gardens around you.
Tony, I'm just catching up tonight. I'm on the coast in the north east, bit further north than you. I hope they have survived today's weather!!! Its chucked it down all day and blowing a hooley!
keep your eye on the weather forecast, tony. 3 days ago I checked the app on my phone. it was all over 40f. checked again this morning and this weekend is set to fo down to 37f. cold enough for a possible ground frost. if I get any tomatos out i'll be using a back-up weapon. plastic bottles to cover them...…..brian
I've always grown mine outside as I didn't have a greenhouse, now I have a greenhouse I'm still growing them outside, I might just try one inside and see what the difference is,, happy growing...😊
Tony, you're a brave man.😁😁
Tony, those of us without a greenhouse always grow outside. I have pretty good luck and moderate success yearly.
Wow, Tony. How did they fair with last nights frost. We still have a few more days of it coming this week so if they are ok to make sure you wrap them matey. I have some to go outside this year too, but it's not the first time I've done it, pal. Slightly angle the pots towards the wall and will be less of a strain on the stem when bending over to the wall to climb mate. Great episode
I grow tomatoes outside in pots against my cottage, which is painted white, bumper harvest, they do brilliant with comfrey feed, good luck 😁
Enjoyed the video i have not ever grown tomatos out side but will give it a go I'm pretty far North BA94 Antrim Ireland
I grow them outside here in West Cork,Ireland
Put some of mine out too (35) crimson crush/blush, fleece and newspaper at the ready, held some back so if i lose the first lot i will let the remainder put out descent side shoots, then break them off stick the side shoot in a glass of water to root and hey presto back to the original number in no time, i do this every year and they produce mases of fruit outside mind i am in Somerset lol.
Crossing fingers and toes for you Tony! A xx
Tony we are due a frost this weekend. Have fleeces over what i have in the allotment and in the greenhouse. Maybe put a few fleeces over for next bit, just to be sure mate. Ive always grown mine outside, i have redbrick at the front of the house and it held the heat a good bit at night, the ones i grew in the alotment were there till September and great produce all round.
Great video! Moira From England.
Doing some outside Roma and beefsteak. Tony what did you decide to do with the green pocket for the wall. Salad stuff for me on mine. Cheers Dean.
Down to zero forecast for Gateshead for the weekend
Bloody hell mate bit early yet. Middle of month for me and I am on south coast. Best have some fleece handy.
Nod received from Mr C. Will get mine out next opportunity, probably Bank holiday Monday now.
I put some out last week
im in south Yorkshire I grow most of my toms outside allways get a good crop

How do you stop black flies when growing in doors? Ive put the plant outside now as there were too many!
I’m in the US and I don’t know anyone who grows their tomatoes inside a poly tunnel be it the North or South. Yours are going to do just fine! They might even taste better. 😊
I grow toms outside every year in the southeast but won’t put the outside until late May. Hope you avoid a frost and they’ll do fine.
Ive grown them outdoors in gateshead fpr years, gardeners delight always seems to get the best results

Usually out 1st 2nd week in may
I'm in Texas... so yeah outside. Bit of a different climate. Our biggest issue is keeping them alive through late July and August when it gets up around 37-40C during the day. We tend to talk about having two tomato seasons. One in the Spring (tomatoes setting and ripening now through July) and then one in the Fall (September through November), so keeping the indeterminates alive through the scorching time is better for yields than starting new ones for the Fall season. It does get to be a pain since indeterminates can get 3 meters tall easy with that long of a growing season.
Hi Tony, great video. Was wondering if you noticed any difference between the plants in the bed and the ones against the wall? Also how much do you space out the ones in the bed? Planting mine out in sunny Manchester this weekend! hopefully.
I thought those pots would be good because you can water around them allowing the roots to get water but not too wet.
Grow mine outside every year but even here in the deep South it will be a week or so before they go out. One other point is that they look very close together. I always leave around a metre each way.

Tony C Smith Sounds a lot but when I started gardening, many years ago, I lost a whole seasons crop of tomatoes to blight. I learned afterwards that one way of reducing the the risk was to maintain air flow around the plants. Since then never looked back and have never lost any to blight despite some of my neighbours not being so fortunate
I have learned with tomatoes outside to never water from top down, water at base only. Pinch suckers off
Good luck! I am not as far north as you. I am on Puget Sound in Washington state and don't have a greenhouse so outside is my only choice. In previous years, cherry tomatoes are 5he only type I have successfully grown here (grew up in the deep south and tomatoes there are a piece of cake) . Here, though, my full sized tomatoes only start to make as the season is getting too cool so they just don't have enough heat for long enough. I keep trying, but with different varieties that have a shorter time to maturity. This year probably won't be my year with the full size because I started seeds too late and then, due to a mouse, had to start all over again so am very far behind. Will be watching and hoping yours work great! P.s. if the weight of the tomato plants and the wind start to make your canes iffy, just run twine from cane to cane in maybe 3 or so horizontal rows. That'll strengthen it all up.
I've grown wee cherry ones in a pot... mind I'm up on the North Coast of Scotland. kw14 post code lol. I may try this next year, see if I can limp one through our summer outside 😂
its may 6th down here in margate and we still have frosts..waiting another week at least before i put mine out.
Janice - I was born in your area in Seaton Carew my uncle lived in Greatham. - I live in S France now and browsing as new house and plot! How many side shoots did you pick off and what was the spacing? We have chickens too. Nice music!
good luck with growing toms outside in the NE tony take care stay safe
I grew tomatoes in pots successfully last year here in north east Scotland against a west facing house wall. I wanted to plant out this years tomatoes today but its blowing a hoolie so I will have to wait !
Tony, I’ve just seen the ten day weather forecast and it’s gonna be frosty over this weekend so cover your newly planted tomatoes. This isn’t a joke ,check out the met office website. Good luck .
Hi Tony I am growing Tomatoes outside. But I live in Spain!
Here in southern Indiana mine are all out. I have only grown tomatoes outside Tony. And they love it. Hope you haven't planted them too close together in that frame. I would not have put that row down the middle.
The only thing I would have done differently is plant them deeper. I clip off all by the very top leaves and then plant the entire stem length other than a couple of inches into the soil. This way they entire stem develops roots making for a very sturdy and strong plant. I've never planted tomatoes any other way, but I'm in what is considered a high desert area in the US. Good luck with your trial. I think they will do great.
Tony I never grown anything in my life I am having a go outside Tomatoes Sungold thanks for help

Way to go Ross
Hoy Tony. . . I'm about to do the same up here in Scotland. Fingers crossed. That's also a cracking piece of music. . . who is it?
Where do I buy the fleece from pls and does it not damage the plants when you lay it on top of the plants? Also where do you get the metal poles from? new gardener thanks
Do you plant pots have no bottoms in them ? Thanks
I put a most key net over my veg to keep the birds and slugs off most ket net for a double bed you can get them off eBay
Hiya, I can't find an update on these, how did they do Tony?
How have they coped with this frost tony ? I’m down the southeast and don’t usually put them out till end of May.
How did you get on? For the firs time, I've started some from seed 55 days ago and I've let the strongest ones go outside for hardening off, but I think the nights are still a little too chilly for them to be grown outside just yet...Think it needs to be warmer...I'm in an outer London suburb.
As I live on the north east coast like you ,(Hartlepool) I know we are very unlikely to have frost after the end of April, unlike the unfortunate people who live inland.I
Garden halos for tomatoes
Tony, I too have planted 6 grafted Tomato plants outside on a trellis and they are all around 4 feet tall now. I remove suckers and feed weekly and fingers crossed, I'm gonna get a bumper crop this year. Being outside lets the breeze discourage flying pests and keeping the lower branches trimmed reduces the risk of splash which could blight your plants.
I've never grown them inside only outside, just discovered that is a thing now, how strange. Coming back to allotments after 20 years and everyone now uses nets which means I now have to use nets or be stripped, was fine without nets before. All this plastic isn't a great idea.
Oh dear hard frost overnight tomorrow mate get em covered up well !!!
Frost on way up your area tony be aware 🍅🍅🍅🍅
