    I was doing a 2018 Hylander. It had plastic housing. 1st oil change in years, and I have never seen that housing before. But I'm game so I went at it. Did some homework and was prepared. The guy ordered the filter and oil from Amazon. The new filter housing was bought at a local Autozon, also plastic. After 2 hours of struggling to remove the filter housing broke, the grips on the side tore off, and oil was leaking from the side. I found a video describing a sandpaper method. I cut a 1 inch strip. Placed it inside the tool neatly so it would allow the tool to fit snug. With steady pressure, it came out. But I effed up. I put the O-ring on the top🤦🏾 like the regular filters. When the owner started the engine. The filter housing dropped out the bottom. I found another part at O'Reilly. This one was metal. Everything went smooth after that. Note. I was cursing them out for making that part out of plastic. After effing up the installation of the new plastic one. I was thanking them for making it plastic. If I had made that mistake, with a metal hosing. I would have effed up the threads 🥴 * Pay attention even if you have been fighting a problem for a long time. When you finally break through. It's no time to create more problems for yourself. I was home free, but I put the O-ring in the wrong place. * be honest and stay humble. The customer spent around $350 for this oil change. Twice the oil. Because it dumped out . 2 oil filter housing. And paid me at the end. 😶‍🌫️ I promise I told him I'm good. I did want anything because of the extra expense he had acquired. But he said to me. "You never gave up" This was a close call. Stay safe, stay focused. Make a living.

    Also.....for a STUCK housing.....NEVER use the small 3/8 center hole drive of the cap/tool, to REMOVE.....you will either break the cap/tool....or it will strip and round-out the 3/8 drive. ALWAYS us the LARGE ( 24-27mm) hex nut that surrounds the 3/8 drive hole. Because the INSTALL torque is LOW.....you CAN use the 3/8 drive to install and tighten. Cheers.

    Paper trick did it. I used a shop towel between the cap and the housing not sure if initial taps around the filter helped but the winner was the paper trick for me. I was able to apply much more pressure without thing sliding from the housing. Thanks a lot.

    That includes Toyota Dealerships. Oil changes are usually done by the junior mechanic ( tech ) and at my dealership, I always got 5he oil changed there while the vehicle under warranty. In the last couple years 5he cost of an oil change has pretty much doubled. I did two more changes at the dealership and I always keep my receipts and the work order. I looked at two of the last three oil changes and saw that on two of them there was a $52 charge for an “ oil filter assembly “. This is the dealer’s cost for a replacement plastic housing. This means that the Toyota trained tech had twice put the filter housing on so tight that h3 had destroyed it. I’ve done 5h3 last 3 myself and follow the torque recommendation and guess what……… it’s easy to take off.

    I have broken the nut off the tool, broken tabs of the housing, hit it with wood, punch, chisel. it will not turn. I went to Toyota dealer and asked them about it. they are selling the same tool that I have that broke. I talked with a tech there and he showed me his tool. I wish mine was that big and rugged. they want to charge me 30$ to r&r the filter. I am gonna beat it until it breaks or turns! btw, the dealer is the one that installed the filter that is there now, they say they torque them on. ya, right.

    Before you try anything else, make sure the engine is fully warmed up and try loosening up the filter housing with a 18" breaker-bar, then open up the oil-pan drain valve. The filter-housing on my 2011 Camry LE was completely stuck until trying this. Last November, I took the car to Jiffy Lube for inspection and oil change. Boy, did they tighten up the filter housing. They really over-torqued the mthrkr! Jiffy-lube is a great place for inspections if driving an old car, like mine.

    Stick rag down in cup slide on filter housing and impact off using 1/2 impact gun works every time. I do this every day and never break them. But without rag to take out slop it will break the teeth on side of filter housing. Yes this is a poor design by toyota. Anyone with this design I recommend replacing with metal housing to avoid future headache.

    I tried all the tips but nothing was working. As a last-ditch effort I slid a seven-inch piece of 3/4-inch PVC pipe over my 3/8 socket wrench and that did the trick, giving me just enough grip and leverage to loosen it. I was just an ace away from taking it to a mechanic. NB: some of the tips mentioned here that I had tried in advance very probably loosened it to the point where the PVC proved effective.

Make sure you have the following... 1. The proper Motivx* oil filter cap wrench. Item #MX2320 us for all Toyota/Lexus/Scion engines 2.0 liters and larger using a cartridge style oil filter or item #MX2321 is for all engines smaller than 2.0 liters using a cartridge style filter. 2. A 27 mm ½ inch drive socket 3. A ½ drive breaker bar (18 inches or longer in length. An extension may be needed for some models.) If an oil filter cap seems difficult to remove, only the above items should be used (or equivalent tools). Do not simply use a ⅜ inch drive ratchet or ratchet with extension as these will sometimes result in breakage of the oil filter cap wrench or the oil filter cap. Always make sure the teeth on the wrench are properly engaged with the tabs on the oil filter cap. To prevent reoccurrence of the problem •Make sure new o-rings are properly lubricated before installing. •Use a torque wrench to install the oil filter cap to no more than 18 ft.lbs (25 N•m). Oil filter drainplug = 10 ft.lbs. (13 N•m) * If you think the Motivx tools are too expensive at least consider the following... Do not buy an oil filter cap wrench that is made from cast aluminum. Only buy one that is forged. Do not buy one that is strictly a cap wrench that does not have teeth. Do not buy one that claims to fit all models or even all four cylinders. The 2.0 and 2.5 liter four cylinder engines use the same oil filter cap wrenches as the six and eight cylinder engines use. Only the 1.8 and 1.3 liter engines use a different size oil filter cap and oil filter cap wrench. If the oil filter for your four cylinder vehicle comes with one o-ring instead of two then your vehicle takes the same wrench as a Prius or Corolla. If your oil filter comes with two o-rings & a drain tool then your oil filter cap takes the same wrench as the six and eight cylinder engines. Some companies claim their wrench works for all four cylinders but on the 2.5 liter engines that smaller wrench does not engage the teeth on the wrench to the tabs on the oil filter cap. It may work if your oil filter cap is not stuck but it is a poor choice. They are mislead.

    Search internet for "sst oil filter wrench toyota". Don't just buy the cheapest one, but one that is very sturdy because those oil filter housings get really stuck and a cheap wrench (sst) will have softer metal. With enough tork in the socket wrench opening of the sst wrench it makes the square opening a round one...

    You can get it. Go to auto parts store and buy a new filter and as much as I know you hate it but read and FOLLOW the instructions. There is a center cap piece on the canister and you're going to want to take it off first. When you take it off it will release pressure on the canister. After that it'll come right off. Not sure exactly but the spec's on the filter canister are something like 25lbs of torque just a little bit past hand tight basically. What this guy did was take the long road because him hitting it would jar the seals just enough to let off some pressure and let off a little bit at a time until it would spin off.

    @@JoeNathan42420 ...there is no pressure to release. It's a non running engine. Same as when you have an old-style filter with a metal can. The center drain is just there to drain the volume of the cannister to make less mess.

  • @toolsmetals2148
    @toolsmetals21485 жыл бұрын

    What also breaks it free a whole lot easier is to had used a 3/8" Ratchet or Extension to open the drain cap first to release the built up pressure that had made it even tighter and instead of turning the housing in reverse to remove you semi apply pressure in forward position than in reverse almost like using a impact gun on over torque lug nuts that are seized to break it away sometimes the same principle is utilized when dis mounting tires from Rims

    No pressure....see this comment here again. Do people think?...if it as an old-style metal-can spin-off oil filter.....how do you relieve the pressure then? No pressure from a non-running engine.

    What gets me is why you didn't remove the center plug that has a 3/8 square hole in it, that plug is there as a pressure release. Most likely this is why everyone is having such difficulty removing the oil filter housing and not because it has been over torqued on a previous job. Just a slew of clueless amateurs out there 🤨

    @@WhiteDevil-du8ne correct. I work for toyota and he's absolutely right. Not saying that someone didn't over torque it on the last change or maybe they haven't changed it in a long time and it's just stuck because of course it happens but at least once or twice a week we'll replace a plastic one with an aluminum one and on every one of em the shanks are all wore down because someone tried and tried to get it off, stripped it out and brought it in. Toyota also sells a filter wrench for these motors they're metal about 2 inches wide and look like a U an on each side has a slit it hugs on the shanks and spins em off.

  • @TheWilferch

    It indeed is from over-torquing. What pressure is it releasing? Not true. It's only purpose is to minimize spillage, by draining the (extra) contents of the housing. Think......do you relieve pressure if it was an old-style spin-off filter? No. But just like a spin-off filter, if you spin-it-off wiuthout doing this center piece drain.....you have a bigger mess, that's all. I wouldn't bother with the center piece and its own O-ring, etc.
