If you would like to get away from the candy bowl and fairy tales during the holidays, we have a tip for an unusual Christmas walk. We'll take you to places that are definitely worth seeing, even if they're off the beaten track, and show you a completely original nativity scene.
With the camera, we take you to the beautiful slopes and mysterious places in Divká Šárka in our Live Prague series. And how to make your Christmas walk even more enjoyable? With an honest home brew!
A brew just like mom's
To make sure you don't get cold on your walk, it's a good idea to equip yourself with a thermos of mulled wine. Forget the 90 crowns of watered-down and boiled wine at the market and make it at home! Pour a glass of water and a little sugar into a pot and let the mixture caramelise. Add star anise, cloves and cinnamon and let it boil for about 15 minutes. Then add the wine to the base and heat (do not boil the wine or you will lose the flavour and alcohol).
A castle with a turbulent history
We start our Christmas walk through Divká Šárka in the village of Jenerálka, where the castle of the same name stands. It was named after the Austrian General Staff, which was based here in the 18th century. The chateau experienced a sad phase during the war - from 1942, a Gestapo-run orphanage with a harsh regime for children of parents executed after the assassination of Heydrich operated here. The Jeneralka is still shrouded in mystery to this day - it is not clear who owns it. It is speculated that it belongs to the billionaire Karel Komarek.
Follow the red trail to the well
We will take the red trail from Jenerálka to enjoy the breathtaking nature around the Nebusicky creek. On the way, we will pass the Oak Mill and a few other houses in Šárka, and through the forest we will reach the Zlatnice homestead. The formerly popular inn is now unfortunately a ruin. And so we set off in search of the well of the same name.
Gingerbread nativity scene
From Zlatnice, we head to the Church of St. Matthias, where you can see a unique nativity scene. It is made entirely of gingerbread and has been on display here since 1972. Its author is the academic painter Helena Horálková and it has 300 figures.
