Next time you go back to the oyster Islands. You can toss them into your kayak and shuck them while your sitting inside the kayak so you can work at your pace. Still be able to toss the shell back to the island as well

  • @BigHeinen

Pro tip! I realize you can't remove the shells from the oyster beds in Puget Sound. A faster method is to grab as many oysters as you are allowed by law and load them into the kayak AND THEN shuck them. Then you toss the shells back onto the oyster bed as the water rises. You abided by the rules and laws and retrieved more oysters. PLUS: you can eat more of them along the way! Bring your Sriracha/Lemon/cocktail sauce and enjoy an after of gluttony on the kayak! BOOM Baby!

Wow!! what an amazing video! Jocelyn is such a lucky lady. When I was growing up, my aunt and uncle owned some land on Lasqueti Island off of the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. That island (back in the 70's) was made of oysters! My cousins and I filled our buckets with fresh oysters and my uncle roasted them over the campfire and I learned how to do that! They were ready when they opened and started to shed water. I ate 20 oysters in one night at age 12 and I was in HEAVEN!

The shuck 'n take policy is really interesting. The satisfaction of squeezing lemon into the shell and slurping oyster is a small price to pay for such gorgeous meat.

I recalled watching a documentary for oyster farming and they used old shells to seed new ones. I think that's why the law requires you to shuck the shell.

@@RoseNZieg regardless it's still very silly. They aren't fixed objects once you put them back and aren't that valuable to the next generation of oysters. Would be much better to simply plant large stones, but that would be far too much money for the state to waste, when instead they could simply be pocketing those tax dollars for a new boat

I remember helping plant some new oyster reefs in the Chesapeake. It’s really cool to see some super healthy oyster reefs like this, they are essentially the cold water equivalent of coral reefs. Super diverse, thousands of different species can be found hiding between and chilling around oyster reefs.

A little safety tip: incorporate a small hook anchor in your Kayak. Leaving your kayak to float on it's own, turn your back too long, and/or a gust of wrong wind blows it away, and you'll be swimming home.

Darn those Po Boys looked good. I understand what Jocylin was saying about not liking cooked oysters made by others. I never liked fried oysters because they were too strong tasting and I thought it was because they were too big. I then had smaller oysters just thrown on the bbq and when they popped open they were ready, and delicious! I think the big ones might have been over cooked.

Hey Taku, the next time you're in WA, you should do a catch and cook with Leif of NWFS, I think it would be super fun for both of you. Also, I used to work as an oyster shucker for a the biggest seafood company here in WA, so if you'd like to learn how to speed-shuck for times like this, I'd love to teach you(and I'm sure learn a lot from you along the way). Cheers, from South Puget Sound

Back in 2018 I bought my first brand new car (which was a 2018 Ford Fiesta SE) and I took it on a vacation to Washington and it was so nice out there I ended up getting a job in Sumas, Washington at a blueberry cooler and I lived out there for 4 months. I remember I used to go to Bellingham every single weekend. I would go to Locust beach and it was awesome. It became my favorite beach. That beach was always so calm and quiet. Very peaceful. I used to lay down in the water where I would enjoy a beer and a joint. One day I'm gonna go back and I'm gonna take my kids.

Ive made a lot of meals on this channel based on what he makes since their is a huge asian grocery store less then 20 minutes from me... almost all exact ingredients and I can tell you they are so amazing.. of course I had to dub down on a few fatty ingredients since I got total hip replacement surgery about a month ago, cant have added weight on my new titanium hip...still practicing on cutting sushi though, that will take some time to master.. even the experts of sushi chiefs haven't mastered it.. takes years and years of patience
