Tiny cabins in VA's woods to slow down & resync inner clock

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Is the "simple cabin" the ideal vessel for disconnecting from modern life? Friends Jon Staff and Pete Davis have placed dozens of tiny houses on wheels in the woods within driving distance of Boston, New York City and Washington DC. “The cabin”, explains Staff, “reminds us of a time when we didn’t have to respond to something within an hour, let alone 24 hours, when we didn’t have to do conference calls on our vacations.”
Believing that context is everything, the Getaway founders don’t offer, and actively discourage, too much activity (there’s no kayaking, swimming, skiing). Instead, they offer a cell phone lockbox, acres of nature, tips for “forest bathing”, wildflower scouting and campfire making. “We are actually trying to regain the idea of boredom,” proselytizes Staff, “And what happens when you push through that. There’s research that shows if you push through that magical things happen.”

For those being negative about this being a business... This is a great way to come and experience the space firsthand for those wanting / considering this lifestyle or possibly considering this idea as a business. Tiny houses aren't for everyone but are for many just as this kind of getaway isn't for everyone but is for many. How about sharing your opinion in a better light instead of putting the business and it's owner down. It's okay not to want to experience this getaway without the need for the insults.

This makes me grateful for the balance in my life. I commute 20 minutes to work, my back yard is nothing but trees, my dogs can run in my yard, I don't look at my phone all weekend (other than to check up on family) and I can barely hear the road from my house. I hope other people get a chance to live that as well.

Blackridge I've always lived in the countryside, even when it was on the very outskirts of a city. Never looked at my phone at work because I didn't have one, the house phone was all I needed and I was a nurse so just too busy. I do feel sad for people who are glued to their phones (let's face it they aren't really phones anymore, they are devices for your boss to get in touch with you 24/7 7/52) and I'm a bit fed up at just looking at the tops of people's heads and as for earbuds! If a person that's stood next to you says something and I say pardon I don't expect some ignoramus to pull a dumb face say doh and point to his ear. I'm not against technology just bad manners.

I have had this very idea in my head for years. Was so excited to see there are others who feel the same way. I grew up in a log cabin in the woods, no neighbors and miss it very much. Technology has made us spoiled and created an addiction within us. Its robbed us of the very beauty right before our eyes. We need to put down our devices and look up, see the beautiful world before us. I hope to one day have a place similar to this. And if you want to start a business in Idaho, I'll manage it for you. ;) Great video, thank you!

This reminds me of a trip we took to Colorado a few years ago. We rented a cabin in Allens Park, a small town outside of Estes Park. We thought we would spend a lot of time in Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park but the front porch of that cabin was so meditative, with a gurgling stream and such beauty to look at we spent most of our time there. We did drive through the park one day and I took my horse loving youngster on a trail ride, but other than that we just enjoyed the cabin.

Fortuitous timing on this video, Kirsten. We had plans to camp for 3 nights on the Skyline Drive, however the threat of thunderstorms for 3 days led me to look into getting last minute reservations at "Getaway." Great way to experience a tiny house in a relaxing environment. Our first night was a deluge of rain, and we were nice and cozy. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome and comfortable. Conveniently close to the Skyline Drive. Thanks for posting the video, as always! :-)

Wow! This is exactly what i've wanted for decades! Grew up in the woods in Michigan, with a small family farm at the edge of the forest. Even had a small creek. The most wonderful way to live, and to me, the only way. Wish I hadn't ended up permanently disabled and on SSI at just 29 years old, and had been able to buy a small piece of land to do this on. Now that I'm 61, pretty much alone, and can't manage a larger house anyway, it would be so perfect. Hate the city so much. Congrats, you just became hipsters yourselves. Nobody cares if you’re making “real” campfires with a bow drill. Certainly not anyone in his generation. His business just might be the perfect introduction for these urban millennials to get outside their cities and off their devices. I know as a father of two teens daughters that hate nature. His cabins would be an easier sell than staking tents and sleeping on the ground. Gotta ease people into the concept.

It appears to be affordable way to ’get away’ from it all, as well. However, as a business, It would be a huge investment to start up a business like this tho. You would have to get a huge amount of land just to get started. It could be really expensive and take a while to start profiting from it because, it would be a seasonal thing. Tyfs!

'Shoulds' or 'shouldn'ts' are a challenge to the 'should-ers' ;p Beautiful inspiration... Thanks so much Kirsten, et al, for sharing as you do. It is our own personal response ability to weed through, and only receive what feels right for each of us, as individuals, and just leave the rest... greatfull for all of it, in showing us choices, possibilities.

Despite the where, what for and why...I think the idea is fantastic. Love it when he said: "go forest bathing" a concept of just walking in the woods. ***ALL & ALL being in nature like this is second best to what I think a Beautiful, Utopian HEAVEN would be like.***

I've long wished for an entire city neighborhood like this. I feel like our urban design across north america is all wrong. By all means clear out space for the commercial areas as needed but residential should feel natural. Like a camp ground. We can have most or all of our modern trappings without living in a standardized template.

Dirt poor people live like this all the time. They light a camp fire in the back yard and sit on old chairs. Maybe having nothing is everything.

Pricey, but I think the deal is that there are many people who can't camp -- if they tried they would spend a few grand on gear and be frustrated trying to use it on a 2 day getaway. Case in point: The couple locked their keys in their cabin... in the middle of the woods. There's nobody to steal your things, but the habit remains. The obvious goal is to turn the anxious thoughtlessness into intentional thoughtlessness for the purpose of relaxation. Some folks may be the best software developers or data analysts but not have a clue how to start a fire or how to relax lol but it's true! It seems that they offer a different sort of concierge to have guests attempt to relax by doing as little as possible, Im sure folks enjoy it, and I imagine that many more similar sites will pop up as tinyhomes/cabins become more refined and cheaper to mass produce (ironic...) Having grown up in a rural area middle of nowhere forest I remember my ears ringing from silence. After moving to a small town to work I forgot that tinitis was a thing until coming back to visit. There really is a sound of silence and it IS a deafening roar. It's possible to affordable live like this, but we're all tempted to try to do "better." Better for some is having an home in the woods on an awesome creek with a huge garden, but many sacrifice ability to produce great income as a result. We're very fortunate to have the opportunity to choose our lifestyles, and I think it's great that he's offering a temporary option geared toward urbanites while producing some honest income, building assets, that's honest work to me. Thanks for the videos, cheers!

wow, I’ve seen photos all over of these cabins individually, but had no idea they were in a larger area together. I find it beautiful and a bit sad: to teach people of the wonders of nature, but that they had not yet learned them...it seems one should get the chance to build a campfire, as a child, and not from a manual. That seems like a right every child should have-to build a campfire and stare into it and laugh and talk all night with friends and family. I love that this man is a thinker-and that he is a great expressionist-he can fully articulate the tensions that most modern humans are feeling deep in their hearts.

I totally agree with this style of thinking. I have been living my life like this , almost all my life to date but I do have houses just for me and my family/friends. Only some understand this thinking, and it is not easy when you are govern by a materialistic notion, all around you; but one has to realise that it is in some way compliments, provides necessary innovations, new products , that extra time etc to enhance the freedom I want to achieve. Only negative aspect is that commercialisation of this idea once it is absorbed into materialistic stream of consciousness !🤔🌹👈❤
