Tina Brown on the future of Britain's royals

How will Britain's monarchy transition from the now-96-year-old Queen Elizabeth II when her reign ends? And what has the estrangement of Prince Harry done to the royal family? Correspondent Mo Rocca talks with royal watcher Tina Brown, author of the new book, "The Palace Papers: Inside the House of Windsor - The Truth and the Turmoil."

Agree. Although the Diana years were hard to swallow, but unfortunately she was the architect of much of her own misery. Her emotional fragility was there for the world to see, including her young sons. If she ever used them as pawns, it’s no wonder Harry has himself sought an emotionally controlling woman. The Royal Family have listened to public sentiment in the intervening years and altered their approach, which has given William and Harry way more freedom than they might otherwise have had. Calling them ‘the firm’ is straight out of Diana’s playbook. The world has moved on. Harry needs to too… maybe he should find a reputable psychologist to help him… better look beyond better up, as qualified, bona fide coaches sign up to a code of ethics by which anyone with actual psychological issues must forwarded to a professional for mental health help. Coaches trying to tackle his issues could be harmful to both him and those whose lives he might impact.

@@lnlywriter9618 The thing is I don't see nothing wrong for Harry and Meghan to have some say in what sort of endevours they participate within the royal family and that the rest of the time they do their own things. That Harry would have become something like prince Andrew was unfair and even frankly old fashioned. It is unfair to demand that prince Harry and Meghan would just sit doing nothing and then go to some sort of things that the court deemed approriate. Now if that meant that they would not get the same funding as before then that would be approriate. But not to give them some say in what their lives are going to be like, is just cruel demand. Especially when they told for a long time that they were not happy and that things needed to change. I really can't see the harm that the royal family changed the rules and allowed for Harry and Meghan to live their lives, do business and documents and then sometimes represent queen. It likely would have been win win situation. They would only use the royal titles when representing the queen. What i find annoying that even if they cut all funding for Harry, even the security costs etc and removed his titles and royal patronaged , they still seem to expect that Harry would ask permisssion from the palace about what activities he participate. They chose to cut everything so stop complaining. From what I can tell Harry is glad he left RF, but I am sure there is sadness around how things went and because the relationships have fractured. I am pretty sure there is regret on the parts of the RF as well. They both could have handled things better.

Which are part of the duties of the monarch as Head of State. I always wondered why this give me and then I'll give you back. It has hurt that many tourists call it londonistan. The actual stats about the good they do or don’t do - we will NEVER see the real figures. Andrew and Fergie, for instance, have shacked up for years at the very large and luxurious Royal Lodge. WE pay for all the servants, gardeners, cooks and maids. Funny how nobody says a word. It takes millions and an army of employees in upkeep to put on the show of the RF. UK has drastically changed in demographics. There is well-founded concern about the Queen’s exit.

I do not understand why Harry was not treated as his cousins,Zara, Beatrice,Eugenie,Peter. They are part of the Royal family, show up to events when needed. The insult of being the"spare" has to be devastatingly hurtful. You can see the results of that dubious position in Andrew and his behavior, total entitlement without responsibility. That Harry wants a different path is admirable. That his family was unwilling to create a place for him was not.

They are NOT kind to outsiders and view her as a threat to THEIR Livliehoods... (and they do have livelihoods dependant upon the crown) . Who knows what the advisors to the queen are saying to the frail 96 year old woman.. they have to keep that image up. FOR THEMSELVES.. and that is always the way it has been with the Royal Family. Just listen to Diana's stories.

Princess Anne was the “spare” for the first 10 years of her life as she was born in 1950. Andrew was born in 1960. She seems to have a solid head on her shoulders and dedicated to the Queen and the commonwealth . Andrew was raised knowing Charles would be married and would have children. All Royals are well versed in how the succession works, Andrew was fully aware he would only be the “second in line after Charles” until Charles had children. William 1982 and Harry 1984 were born. Andrew knew by the age of 22 he was moving down the line… entered Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC), Dartmouth, in 1979 to train as a naval officer, following in his father’s footsteps. Andrew completed the course at BRNC in 1980. He then underwent pilot training in both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters and received his pilot’s wings in 1981. Andrew retired from the Navy in 2001 Harry was raised in the same manner as Andrew knowing William would marry and have children. Catherine started dating William over 20 years ago (2001) Harry knew when he was 17 his days as “spare” were ending. His schooling was done, he went into the Army just as his Uncle Andrew went into the Navy. It was expected Harry would have a career in the Army for 20+ years. We Haven’t heard George , Charlotte or Louis described as the “spares”. People should Stop with this “spare” business

Charles is silly to exclude his nieces as working royals. The Queen has 4 children and several cousins to assist her. Charles now only has 2 siblings and one son to assist him since Harry and Andrew are out of the picture. The Royals are in great demand for many ceremonial duties and, the more they are seen, the better. It would be wise to use the York girls and Edward’s children to assist him. However, Charles appears to have never maintained close relationships with his siblings. His position, which was not earned, has led him to believe he is special and better than his siblings. In reality, he is a wimp with low self-esteem who treated his wife abominably by violating his marriage vows and consorting with a mistress. His disgusting publicized phone call is a true picture of a man more common than any commoner in the kingdom. Hope the Queen lives many more years so his reign is as short as possible.
