Wow. A recording of the actual lecture by Tim Leary that I attended at UCLA in January 1967. I was very impressed with Leary's charisma. I remember leaving the lecture convinced that I would try LSD soon. (About a year later I tripped for the first time.) But that wasn't my only take-away. I realized that you could hear lectures like this in college--brilliant, inspiring lectures--and I determined to attend college full time. (At the time I was a part-time night student at Santa Monica City College, but I liked to hang out at the UCLA campus in Westwood.) There's a visual gag that you miss listening to the tape at the 2:54 mark. When he says, "The chemical I'm about to ingest is odorless, tasteless and colorless. It's addictive. It can be lethal in large quantities." He drinks from a glass of water. The Q&A at the end is good, too.

.... I like how Dr. Leary, in the first few minutes, describes the water he's about to drink using the same, alarmist language the government uses when describing a "controlled substance".... Brilliant ! ! !

He came to the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. in 1968, while I was a student at the nee cluster college, Callison. Our enlightened Professor of World Religions, Lawrence Meredith, invited him to speak to us. This was the epicentre of the "hippy" movement. The following year, my entire Charter Class went to India and studied a non-Western culture with Indian professors, Buddhist scholars, etc. He sounded much as in this recording - intelligent, educated, rather prolix. Most of us were using some sort of drug - a few tried psychedelic mushrooms or LSD. I don't think any of us were "converted" to a new way of thinking by him, but he elucidated some of what we intuited, and by tying everything into "the religious experience", he gave drugs and experimentation credibility and even respectability. That was something we felt we needed, since our parents disapproved and censured us. Being young then was full of hope, high expectations, high aspirations - especially spiritually. Being young now is dreadful. I wouldn't be young today for all the money in the world.

@@hippy1002 You are right! I have been deceived by LSD and DXM! I have stopped abusing all drugs and alcohol through the power of the Holy Spirit. My problem now is quitting smoking, but at least I have cut down. I still sometimes relapse on drugs and alcohol, but very infrequently. When I sin now, I come to the Lord through the name of Jesus Christ and I thank Him for forgiving me through the blood of Christ. The thing about LSD and DXM is that they caused me to realize that life is just an illusion, We are here temporary, I now live for God. I praise God for filling me with the Holy Spirit and for giving me the ability to not fall into the temptations that I used to freely give into all the time. PRAISE GOD, JESUS CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT! And, my friend, I will meet you in Heaven!

@hippy1002 Shut up. Be quiet. Your archaic dogmatism is a splinter in the minds of the free individual. You worship christ for his image, not for what he said. It's not about Jesus, or God for that matter, judging you and forgiving you. It's about your growth as an individual. The church inserted a domineering splinter in the back of your head, and Christ's crucifixion won't end until you remove it.

However, Dr. Leary was doing uncontrolled experiments w/ hallucinogens. He had no way of knowing what parts of the brain were being affected, and without controls, he had no way to measure improvements caused by the drug. He had his subjective experience which was positive, but as compared to what prior experience? And sadly, there are reports of many tragic experiences w/ hallucinogens. Again knowing what you want to affect, to what degree, and by what specific method of delivery is essential. Otherwise, one doesn’t know what the results mean. The experiments that I’m barely aware of that use psilocybin to treat PTSD in military personnel (and maybe others) seem to be successful in decreasing or eliminating the debilitating symptoms of PTSD (ruminations, intrusive thoughts, hyper-reactivity, panic, anxiety and others) . The treatments are quite helpful in restoring a person’s usual life. Depression is closely linked to anxiety, and psilocybin seems to improve that as well. So progress is being made and as long as the GOP stays squashed, there might be a bit of hope for the future. Or as Emily Dickinson said, “Hope is the thing w/ feathers.”

Just my two cents.. It’s a trip to me to think that people think that he’s “crazy” or “dangerous” etc.. but in actuality, he’s like a time traveler sent back from the future in-order to let humanity know what we need to do to improve humanity progressively in a universal sense for the future. You’d have to experience the level of “trips” or “journey’s” that he’s been on to over-stand/inner-stand what he’s saying & it’s brilliant when you really think about it.

The establishment is a reflection of our consciousness. The menopausal people are part of us too because we are One Consciousness thus, to help that part of Consciousness that is hurt and afraid we must forgive it, accept it and heal it. There is no standardization of reality, no rules nor even matter to cling on to. In quantum physics, just as Timothy said, everything is energy and this energy is interpreted by our individual consciousness. We don't need to be trained nor schooled for anything because not only the Kingdom of Heaven is within but the infinite creative intelligence responsible for all there is, is there too: omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent. It is the cultural constructs, believes, opinions, religions, ideologies and "personality" that put "another brick on the wall" (Pink Floyd, The Wall) to separate us from the Divine rhythm. Let's turn on, tune in and drop out, the time is NOW! 🤗💖😜😉😀😍😘🙏✌️

Wine to water. 1975. 1972 opposite Elm Street, a beam of light. 5 years ago here 2 pairs of prescription eye glasses vanished from my pocket. It is possible to "act" outside the material world/universe. There is a steep cost too. I'm not an "american". 1967? 12 years old. Unley highschool. Yeah, religious people assume that only religious experience is truly meaningful. Of course, they would probably claim they take it on faith that this is the case, or that they have personally experienced this kind of experience as being the only truly meaningful one, or that it is a truth that has been revealed to them. Leary's 'religion' is no different in this fundamental belief of the religious. But most human beings would surely disagree. This is because human beings look back on their lives and find what was truly meaningful to them were the human connections they made -- with family, friends, loved ones, etc. -- and whatever they were able to accomplish in their lives in terms of their achievements. They will also look fondly upon the fun and joyful experiences they had in life that were important to them. Religious experience surely has it's value, but to claim that it is only truly meaningful experience a person can ever had is absurd -- in fact, it's BULLSHIT ! (I think Nietzsche more or less said the same)

The comment thread on this is at least as interesting as the lecture itself. Leary is an idiot, a saint, a deviant, a genius and, my favorite, the devil talking about god (maybe the devil's favorite subject). Some say it is more relevant now than then, others say it was stupid then and more so in retrospect. Maybe he was a CIA agent, maybe Ginsberg and Kesey were as well. I have always thought that Kesey was picked out by he CIA as someone who might go rogue and steal the fire. Convenient for the CIA since they could preserve plausible deniability in their role as potential protagonist of the "psychedelic revolution". The CIA covertly funded the rise of abstract expressionist painting just a decade before. Clever folks in the deep state, always have been. Point is, CIA op or no, the psychedelic revolution DID bring wondrous things into the world dispute the blood on the hands of its carrier, as did abstract expressionism. There is a profound lack of both humor and irony whenever people talk about guys like Leary. People don't see that even a broken clock is right twice a day. They don't see that as much of a monster as Manson, for example, was, he still had things to say about the world outside that were worth listening too. Other way around, Jesus was perhaps the finest human who ever walked the planet but people have done and continue to do monstrous things in his name. So here is a question; if a mass murderer also had the cure for cancer, which would he be remembered for? Hail Eris.
